ACCESS BAGGAGE
From platinum tooth to chunky jewellery to omnipresent shades-accessories have become the trademark of Punjabi singers

'What's with our Punjabi singers'! Watching Mehsopuria signing autographs to his fans in a mall, an onlooker couldn't help commenting. Well, the singer looks okay, he sings pretty well and he is not involved in any kiss 'n' tell controversy. What could possibly be wrong with him, we wondered. Look at all those tattoos, headband and glasses. How can he sign autographs without removing them, the onlooker commented.

Is this a revelation? Punjabi singers accessorising themselves from head to toe, looking every bit like a glow sign, with 20 different hair products glistening on the spikes, seeing the world through the shady, oops shades, which they remove only when they go to bed (Not sure on that too). We've seen Jazzy B jazzed up in more gold to make us wonder what's with the accessories? So, we toss a question—Why so much bling, the tattoos, the omnipresent glasses and headbands? What do they convey or should convey?

Mehsopuria, the Punjabi singer of Jat Jogi Ho Gaya, who is always found with his trademark headband and sunglasses, is the first one to reply. "This is my style quotient, I don't do anything extra. In fact, I have always been like this." You mean born with headband and glasses? "No stylish," he shot back. "I don't wear much bling, but yes, one odd tattoo and super cool sunglasses are my favourites."

We can't blame Mehsopuria for his style sense; after all, gold-toothed Jazzy B (We heard he is soon moving to platinum) wears rings on his fingers, chiclets-size diamond in each ear, a heavy gold chain with a gold khanda pendant. And Bohemia, the rapper wears a zillion tattoos, something too confusing for a simple mind. He laughs, "You wouldn't have a problem deciphering because I have the meaning tattooed along with it. These aren't just any figures, every tattoo has a meaning," he explains. The trademark bandana? "I don't remember for how long I have been wearing black bandana. I pick them from wherever I go," Bohemia shares his style statement adding that this doesn't hamper his singing in any way. "What has accessories got to do with singing?" he questions.

Probably nothing, which is why they can stylise themselves the way they want to. We wonder, who is styling them. Who asks them to wear hundred rings on 10 fingers!

Adds Ritu Kochhar, Director (Corporate) INIFD, "They should hire a stylist actually. But if you give it a second thought, they shouldn't be blamed for it. These singers sing for NRI audiences, who can relate to their style. Back here in India, we do find it a bit weird." In that case imagine Jazzy B without bling or Bohemia without a headband. They still would be singers, wouldn't they!

Romancing THE ROCK
These fine arts students from America and New Zealand are busy restoring the amazing work of art, the Rock Garden that they had read about in books
Mona

Swift and agile, walking along the zigzag boundary wall of the Rock Garden, Cory makes an appearance to meet us as we wait at the gates to check out the new bunch of international volunteers. Her enthusiasm is infectious. As she guides us through some closed areas of the garden, walking over those incredible walls and the garden forest, one can not help but envy the liberty she gets for being a volunteer.

Cory is here with three other women, all in awe of Nek Chand's creation that they had read about and seen in books and Internet. They call Rock Garden their 'home'. Dressed in three quarters and loose shirts, together they are working on a mosaic that is next to Phase 3. The wall has some decorative motifs - flowers, birds on tree branches, snakes, paisley, 'trishul' - that the group has evolved together. They work six days a week among concrete, broken tiles and cement.

Dream come true

Nicole Banowetz (29)

Artist, Denver (USA)

Nicole was the first one from this group who started working on the mosaic. "I read this amazing book on Rock Garden. It mentioned that volunteers are welcome in groups of four," shares Nicole. It's the second time she and Cory are here (earlier 2009), and, are happy to contribute to the cause.

"Working in the US is very different than working here. For example, when I have an installation in the museum, I know how it would look like by the end of the day. But here, things are fluid. First, the height of the wall we were working on increased. Then, also the length," shares Nicole. "But, I love working this way," she adds.

craft call

Cory Philips, 29

Artist, Boulder, Colorado (USA)

Interested in rich handicrafts of India, Cory loves being at the Rock Garden. "I am touched by the hospitality of the people. Just one meeting and they invite you to their homes," says Cory.

Stepping out

Dominique Germain, 23

Artist, New York

On her first ever visit outside her home town, Dominique learnt about the garden and the opportunity from her Art History teacher in City College of New York. She gave it a shot and is happy that she did. "It's a very pleasant experience for me. In my city everyone is focused on self, always rushing and running around. But here, life is more organic and genuine. Life seems hard but people are happy here," she says.

Absolute dedication

Julia Davies, 55

Artist, New Zealand

Julia came to know about the programme some years ago but it's only now that it clicked. "It's the best job that I ever had. We stay here in the guesthouse, so, there is no excuse for getting late to the work," she laughs. "But, honestly, without any TV, radio or Internet, one can wholeheartedly devote oneself to work," she smiles.

This group is really thankful to the creator of their 'home' Nek Chand. "It's amazing how he still comes to work each day at this age. Still, his vision is fantabulous," shares Cory.

The man behind this monument feels proud to host this group and many others. "It gives me immense happiness to have them as part of the project. Local school students do their bit and so do the Army guys. I am indebted to them all," says Nek Chand, humility personified.

Return of the retro

A svelte Zeenat Aman swaying to the cult classic Dum maro dum in the 1971 film Hare Rama Hare Krishna is part of Bollywood folklore. So is the sizzling 1980s cabaret number Pyaar do, pyaar lo, which enchanted an entire generation of cinegoers. Remixed versions of songs like these are now finding a place in Hindi movies, having struck a chord with today's youth.

Pyaar do pyaar lo from Feroz Khan's 1986 film Jaanbaaz has been given a neo-age twist in Anees Bazmee's Thank You, while saucier versions of Laila O Laila (Qurbani) and Dum maaro dum have been remixed for upcoming films Chalo Dilli and Dum Maaro Dum, respectively.

Actress Lara Dutta, whose debut production Chalo Dilli features item girl Yana Gupta gyrating to the new Laila O Laila, explains the reason behind recycling old melodies.

"Some songs are from iconic classics that young cine-goers haven't even seen. So we are just trying to give them songs, which will never go out of style. 'Laila' is our humble ode to a classic song. Zeenat ji (Zeenat Aman) also liked it. We are very happy with the way it turned out," Lara said.

However, Zeenat Aman, whose iconic songs are preferred picks for remixing, has not appreciated the new "Dum maaro dum" with its widely panned lyrics, but is quite happy with "Laila...".

"I liked the song when I heard it. They have retained the original version and, at the same time, have given the song a new flavour. It's got a rustic, ethnic feel and I liked it a lot. So I'm supporting it," said Zeenat.

"I think people are trying to work with what is tried and tested," added the actress, whose chillum-smoking scenes made the original Dum Maro Dum a rage. Old songs are not just getting a new-age makeover in terms of music but also getting topped with spicier, bolder lyrics and contemporary dance steps. — IANS

In their honour
Ekjute Theatre Festival to honour two backstage artistes, Jaspal Singh and Ranjit Singh from the City Beautiful
Mona

In a welcome step, Ekjute is felicitating backstage artistes at Ekjute Theatre Festival later this month at Prithvi Theatre, Mumbai. Jaspal Singh and Ranjit Singh from Chandigarh’s Tagore Theatre are among those unsung heroes who are finally getting their due.

Elated at the invite, Jaspal and Ranjit are busy arranging tickets for Mumbai. “I never thought that I would get a chance to go to Mumbai. And, to receive an honour makes me happy and proud,” says Jaspal, light and sound technician with Tagore Theatre-18 for past 32 years, Jaspal is a known face among the regulars.”

“You see, theatre was great until 1983. We would have as many as 25 plays a month and those too full houses,” shares Ranjit. “In 1983, Sheila Bhatia's Sulgate Daria was staged that was a fateful foretelling of the tough times Punjab was going to see. Theatre suffered a setback post 1984. VP Singh’s reservation move further dampened theatre activity,” says Jaspal, looking rather pensive. His eyes brighten as he mentions the late nineties. “The National School of Drama’s theatre festival revived theatre. Now the administration as well as UT home secretary Ram Niwas himself takes personal interest in Tagore Theatre,” Jaspal sums up the theatre’s past.

Jaspal and his association with it has also changed with time. “When it started everything was manual. I would use hands and feet for dimmer. Then came the gear system and then computers. I thought I would never be able to do it. But three months’ computer course and some practice and I got comfortable with it,” shares Jaspal. “Original theatre was so perfect that even if a pin was dropped on stage each of the 500 audience could hear it,” says Jaspal. But he is pretty happy with the new theatre as it is air-conditioned and he does not have to remove his shirt to work in the summer like before.

His compatriot Ranjit, stage supervisor is equally elated at having received the honour. “We work with who's who of the theatre world. It is the first time that even my work has been recognised and I got a chance to visit Mumbai,” says Ranjit Singh, who has been with Tagore Theatre for the past 30 years. “It feels great to have full house when play is on,” says the duo.

Romance is dying: Blame it on your man

A study has found that romance is dying because men have lost the art of wooing their other halves. It found that most women have not received a surprise gift from their partner for more than a year. And one in five woman has given up waiting for flowers, so buys her own.

A survey of 1,176 adults in relationships by Sheilas' Wheels insurance company, found chivalry fading fastest among young men. One in 10 under 25 had passed off an unwanted gift as a present for their partner.

More than half of young women either paid or split the bill on a first date. And only three per cent forgot an anniversary compared with 10 per cent of men.

"Gifts are an important way of keeping love alive and should be about the thought, not the price," the Daily Express quoted Jacky Brown, of Sheilas' Wheels, as saying. — ANI

CHILL OUT
Trekker’s DELIGHT
The snow-capped peaks offer a breathtaking view which changes every hour—snow white to golden yellow to pure silver in the moonlit night

Last year around the same time, I visited one of the most frequented hill station Dharamshala along with some friends from IBM. We had heard about 'happening' McLeodganj and loved being there. But we had not expected to touch heaven on earth.

We got to know about Triund, the favourite trekking destination of locals and tourists alike. Triund is situated at an altitude of 2,827 metres. We started on foot from McLeodganj that is a 14 km of barren track full of breathtaking landscape. It takes around six hours to make it to Triund.

We spent two nights in a government guesthouse, which one can book through the forest department. There are only two rooms in that guesthouse. Tourists spent the night in camps, making the experience equally fascinating.

The next morning, we took a tougher trek for another 3 km to reach Ilaka Glacier also called snow line. It acts as the base camp for shepherds to go over the pass. Well, being there is an experience in itself. It is as if one is united with mighty Dhauladhars. Few hours of being one with nature and we started the tough trek back to Triund.

The snow-capped peaks offer a breathtaking view which changes every hour from snow white to golden yellow to pure silver in the moonlit night. The trek is pretty challenging but beautiful and takes you through the forests filled with deodar, oak and rhododendron.

A tiring hike but nonetheless a 'must' experience for everyone who lives close to Dharamshala. I wouldn't consider 250 km much of a distance considering the beauty one gets to enjoy. I can't wait for another opportunity to be in the lap of nature, literally!

(Vivek Sharma, a BPO professional, shares his trekking expedition to Triund)

Films we HATED

The first quarter of the year is over. We do a round-up of the films that have tanked at the box office. Some were small films while the others were big-budget ones made by reputed directors.

Thank You: Anees Bazmee should be banned from making mindless and regressive trash in the name of entertainment. The tacky, badly edited torture obviously got lacklustre reviews and is deemed to flop.

Saat Khoon Maaf: Vishal Bhardwaj's black comedy was the biggest disappointment of the year. People expected a powerful film with a spectacular performance by Priyanka Chopra but they were letdown. Despite Darrling's chartbusting success, the film failed to attract audiences during its opening weekend. Reviews for the film were poor too. What a pity!

Game: This has to be the biggest flop of the year as it sank without a trace. The Abhinay Deo directed film was headlined by Abhishek Bachchan and opened to poor reviews. The suspense of the 'whodunnit' was lame and the film dragged in many portions. Even the exotic locales and songs failed to draw in audiences and the World Cup fever was a huge deterrent in drawing crowds. Probably, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani did not see much potential in the film and did not promote it heavily.

Turning 30: Prakash Jha's production was directed by his assistant Alankrita Shrivastava. The Gul Panag starrer was heavily influenced by Sex and The City and got largely poor reviews. It was seriously boring and pretentious and did not even appeal to its target urban audiences.

Dhobi Ghat: Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao made the movie because they felt like it. They knew it would not do well commercially as it was an art film but they made it for themselves, to indulge themselves. Dhobi Ghat was appreciated at international festivals and garnered mixed reviews in India. It hardly ran for a couple of weeks.

Patiala House: The film garnered mixed reviews. Though it is not a genuinely good movie, it is the best work of Akshay and Nikhil's careers in recent times. The film had a slow opening, picked up in the middle and dipped again. It was an average performer at best. — HRM

Daniel fine with wizard image

Forever Harry: Daniel Radcliffe
Forever Harry: Daniel Radcliffe

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe is not bothered that he will be unable to give up his school boy wizard image. The British actor has played the bespectacled hero for last 10 years and has come to take it as a part of his life but he is keen to do different roles.

“There will be some people who will always see me as this character, I know that and understand that. That's fine.

As long as they are not casting directors and film-makers, hopefully it won't hold me back. That's my attitude,” Radcliffe said.

“One thing I took for granted over the 10 years was that I was playing an action hero. You don't get to do that in any other line of performance. I got to slide 40ft down a roof, I got burst out of a ring of fire. I got to do some really cool stuff. I probably won't get to do that so much anymore,” said Radclife. — PTI

Superman's scream

Super power: Henry cavill
Super power: Henry cavill

He had missed a chance of saving the world onscreen once but British actor Henry Cavill says he ‘screamed’ when he was offered the role of Superman for a second time. The 27-year-old actor was initially offered the superhero role in 2006's Superman Returns, but Cavill declined fearing that he would be unable to do justice to the role.

But now the Count of Monte Cristo star is glad to land the role in Zack Snyder's latest adaptation of the comic book hero.

“As much as I wanted it at a younger age, you get to a certain point where you go, 'OK, I'm ready for most things now.' Back then you believe you're ready for it. But as soon as it happens, you think that it's a little heavy. I'm glad it's happening now as opposed to any other time.” “I got the phone call, then ran round the house screaming for 20 minutes, then sat down and thought, 'Wow, I'm Superman. That's insane'. It took me a good long time to get used to the idea. I'm still not used to it,” said Cavill.

The actor admitted that there is pressure but says he is trying hard not to get affected by it.

“There's always pressure. The question is whether you allow yourself to be affected by it. Ultimately, it's a destructive force if you're going, 'Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god,' and you're panicking. I just go do my job and hope everyone likes it.” — PTI

The Fan Club

Actor John Travolta says he is looking forward to working with Lindsay Lohan in the biopic of mafia boss John Gotti. In the film, Travolta will play Gotti and Lohan is said to be in talks to feature as the mafia boss' daughter Victoria.

“I know whatever she would like to do would be great,” Travolta said.

Then he joked, “I know first hand, Lindsay happens to be a very big fan of mine from years ago when she was a little girl and liked (Grease) Danny Zuko and (Welcome Back Kotter's) Vinny Barborino, so I always thought she was gorgeous and talented and filled with a lot of depth!” — IANS

Robbie PAINTS the town red

Robbie Williams may be a successful singer, but he also has a talent for painting. The 37-year-old shared the secret on his blog. “In our down time, which hasn't been much, I found I really liked painting. My favourites I will put on T-shirts. What do you think?” Williams posted along with some pictures of his work.

One of his paintings copies iconic American artist Jackson Pollock's famous ‘drip’ technique while others feature slogans such as ‘Sex Sells, Buy Me’, ‘24hr Party People’ and ‘Image Not Available’.

A more traditional piece is a portrait of legendary British comic Marty Feldman.

Williams says he had turned his Los Angeles home's garage into a gallery. — IANS

Riteish Deshmukh has always been lean. He is bulking up for the shoot of Housefull 2. He has been put on a special diet to gain muscle weight. His look will be similar to that of John Abraham in Dostana and Sajid wants to surprise his audiences.

What's brewing between Kangna and Gerald?

It looks like something is brewing between Kangna Ranaut and Gerard Butler. He met her on the sets of Happy New Year in the US. They hung out after shooting and then he whisked her off to an undisclosed location for a holiday. She did not return to India with the crew of the film. Gerard loves Indian beauties (he was linked to Priyanka Chopra in the past) and Kangna is single and available. Could he be her ticket to Hollywood?

Party politics

Arjun Rampal and Mehr Rampal have cancelled parties after the IPL matches. That is because their buddy Lalit Modi is no longer part of the tournament. Most designers have also withdrawn. Last year, they held 55 parties and fashion shows with the help of Lalit Modi.

She has been complaining that the production house isn’t helping ease the discomfort.
