ROCK the party
There's a stark difference between coming and arriving, between showing up and making an appearance, between being invited and being sought after. Let's admit it, you are either the life of any party or you wish you could be the life of any party! Set people up, mingle, introduce and let others do it to you as well; partying is about being a people's person. Here’s bringing you some tried and tested tips by self-confessed party addicts on how to be the life of every such occasion! "The sheer idea of going to a party is to have fun. You go with that aim and you can never go wrong. Be free, talk to everyone, dress your best and you'll be the darling of every host," Nanki Aurora from the Department of Economics, Panjab University, rustles up some of the evergreen rules. She adds, "I do like to party and end up attending a lot of them as well, but 90 per cent of the time it's a house party, so it's always with my close friends and gang." To begin with, a knock out ensemble is half the battle won, mingling right is rest of the battle won. It's not without a reason why some people are every host's darling! "Dress up the best, it makes you stand out in the crowd. It's also advisable to have a nice bunch of friends and make an entry into the venue together, this way you easily become the centre of attraction," laughs Pradhi Moudgil, another PU student. The girl doesn't mince words on how to get invited at every party. There's no point in stepping out of the house if no one's going to notice or nobody's going to know. While being all over the place is not advisable, restricting to one corner with your own gang is also not done. Warns Chanda Malhotra, grooming expert, Flying Cats, "Trying to be overfriendly within seconds to strangers could kill your image. At any social event, one wrong move could ruin your personality." While mingling is the key, right mingling is even more important! Adds Chanda, "Choosing conversation subjects is very important. You ought to know where the topic is heading. And yes, if you have the confidence to casually talk to strangers, nothing like it." You may or may not like to go but who wouldn't want to get invited at every party. If nothing else works, just hit the dance floor and have some fun. Serious fun! manpriya@tribunemail.com |
Nothing PHONEy about her!
For someone who endorses a cellphone brand, not changing the phone at touch-screen speed is quite an irony. "I don't change my phones frequently because I get emotionally attached to them, unless they completely break. It could be one year, five years or when I lose them, and yes I lose a lot of phones and then I go and buy the same model…my first phone was a Nokia and it was really huge," supermodel and actor Lisa Haydon, acting as a true blue brand ambassador steers the conversation to technology and comes back to what she's in the city for — to meet the lucky winners, announce the prizes, et al. "I think it's a prestigious brand and it also helps you stay connected with your family and friends," sitting in Nokia's 3G bus, she explains the 'off the ramp' associations and readies for a volley of questions, some of them not so technological! After being a regular face on the ramp and just as many ad campaigns, Bollywood perhaps was the natural progression. She debuted with the film Aisha opposite Abhay Deol and Sonam Kapoor. "I choose my projects intuitively, it's not a very complex process. There's no hard and fast rule or parameter. It's just that I choose whatever feels right." Currently, she's working on many projects but, "I'd rather not talk about them," save for the one to be released in August. "I have David Dhawan's Rascals coming up in which Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn are there as well." She adds, "I like Madhuri Dixit, she's my all time favourite actor." Meanwhile, it's the second visit to the city, as she, "was here to model before about a year ago." "My little sister has been here for state tournaments and she likes the place. In fact, she'd be very happy if you write about her." She adds, "But yes, last night I was at Pind Baluchi and we completely enjoyed Punjabi food like Butter Chicken and Naan." Born to an Indian father and Australian mother, she's shuttling between the two places, and when she's not in India, among other things, "it's the food I miss." As for the next gadget, she's looking forward to buying a "Bluetooth fixture with the car…but I'm not into covers or decorating my phone." |
Theatre is magic…
Neeta Mohindra, celebrated theatre person, is in Chandigarh with two of her solo plays Buhe Barian and Chanda Mama Door Ke. Three decades in the field, painter-actor Neeta is comfortable playing four different women characters from different strata of society. “Greater the challenge, greater the satisfaction,” says Neeta. Buhe Barian has got rousing applause in all the 45 shows so far. Solo presentations by Neeta tell stories of women from different strata of society — Kori Handi, a matki that becomes a metaphor for women, Mami, tale of abandoned women, Phirangian Di Nu, story of a Punjabi woman settled in England, and Pakistan Hamara Hai, a story that narrates the fate of women during the days of Partition. Chanda Mama Door Ke, the play that will be staged at six in the evening at Randhawa Auditorium-16 on Sunday, is based on Italian Feminist Oriana Fallaci's tome The Letters To A Child Never Born. Scripted and edited by Neeta, this one narrates the story of an unwed mother talking to a baby that she thinks she has conceived. Quiz her on theatre scenario in the region and Neeta says, “Theatre needs people's participation to thrive. And it's with their help that the scene is looking up, despite the government having failed miserably,” says Neeta. “Anybody who can colour is not a painter. How difficult is it to appoint officers that monitor a region and help those who truly deserve?” questions Neeta, who is pained at the grants meant to aid art being grossly misused. “Art is not easy, it's serious business and requires common people's association to thrive,” says Neeta. And her tips to those bit by the theater bug — “Persistence is the key for any artiste. The more you work, the better you learn,” says Neeta. “There's ample space for everyone to flourish in the world,” she adds. mona@tribunemail.com |
A name to reckon with in theatre, MK Raina, director, came calling to the city on Saturday with plays, Buhe Barian and Chanda Mama Door Ke. “These two plays present the plight of women in different circumstances,” says Raina. Busy with Andha Yug, a production based on Mahabharata, which he is working on in Nepal, Raina is dealing with artistes from around the world. Calling the theatre scenario in the region “fantastic”, Raina says, “Strangely, it's Amritsar that is gaining ground as the theatre capital of the region. All credit goes to the theatre-lovers who are providing a platform to perform.” Shakespeare's King Lear that Raina has worked on with folk artistes from Kashmir is already appreciated in Kashmir and the Northeast. "Soon it's coming to Delhi," shares Raina who is going to Stanford to conduct a few workshops later this year. For his next project, Raina intends to do solo with Neeta on female characters from Mahabharta and another on a Kashmiri short story Shroud Stealer (Kafan Chor). "These are at a nascent stage at present," says Raina. |

He finally has his first solo hero film under Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films. The film is titled Ferrari Ki Sawari. The actor is thrilled about the film, which takes off this month. Krishna’s character in the serial Pratigya may seem to have a rough appearance and an arrogant attitude but the man playing the role sure has a heart of gold. Actor Arhaan Behl feels that is the most distinguishing trait of his. He is thrilled on having won the Most Stylish Sadasya Award at the STAR Parivaar Awards. Arhaan talks about why he loves the role of Krishna, why people love him. When it comes to his real life love, he keeps his mouth sealed. How does it feel to have won the Most Stylish Sadasya Award? Every award means appreciation and I am glad that I won the Most Stylish Sadasya Award. I couldn't attend STAR Parivaar awards but when my teammates came back, I asked them all about Macao and the entire experience. They told me it was a lot of fun and masti. Who is your style icon? No one in particular. I enjoy wearing clothes that are comfortable and suit me. Did you regret not going to the STAR Parivaar Awards function? Not really. I had prior commitments as I was shooting for Comedy Ka Maha Muqabala on STAR Plus from February 22 to 23. I couldn't go because of that and some other personal work. Last year, I had attended STAR Parivaar awards and it was phenomenal. I won the Hottest Jodi award with Pratigya of course. This year, I guess because I wasn’t at the venue, Star gave the Hottest Jodi Award to Natik and Akshara. What do you think people like most about Krishna? Krishna is loved for his simplicity- the most. He is loyal, lovable and the trait what stands out in Krishna's character is that he loves his wife Pratigya a lot. He doesn't hide his love either. In fact he is very open about his love for her in the serial. He is a very clean-hearted person and with him-what you see is what you get. Such a trait is very rare, so I think Krishna has made a place in the hearts of the audiences. What do you like most about Krishna? Everything. I am playing this role and he is projected through me, my body language and acting, so I love Krishna. Krishna is me and I am Krishna (smiles). I think the USP of Krishna is his language, the way he talks, his pauses, his gestures. After the creatives gave me the brief and story, I knew Krishna would be spectacular. I worked hard on the character and my production team too has been very helpful with suggestions and critique. What do you think of Pooja Gor aka Pratigya? She is a talented actress and working with her has been a good experience. Do you think girls like Pratigya exist in real life? Well, Pratigya is the perfect woman. She gets 10/10 for everything -be it her nature, her behaviour, her ability to deliver, fulfilling her responsibilities towards her family. She is bang on with all that she does. I don't think any woman can be like her. It would be very difficult to be so proper and correct all the time. What does television mean to you? Television means entertainment, good source of fun and a major part of life. I don't know of people who don't watch television today. Some might like news channels, or discovery channel or serials or music but everyone watches television. The content on television has changed over the years. People go on and on about saas-bahu shows showing such and such things, but they forget that there are certain reality shows that show worse things. I don't want to take names but there are shows wherein a group of girls and boys would behave in a certain way which makes a deep impression on our youth. The teenagers copy the body language, bad attitude, style and way of thinking from such shows. Many youngsters believe and take after a lot that is shown on these shows which is bad for them. What do you think of talent on television currently? Being on television is a tough job. Television actors don't have it easy as not only do we work hard shooting 12-20 hours a day, 6-7 times a week depending on the show. We also get scripts and the scenes of an episode only one hour before the shoot. If an episode has to be delivered we have shot for 5-6 lengthy scenes in one day which is very tough. There have been various stories about your close friendship with Avantika who plays Arushi in your serial. Are you dating her? No comment. Lots has been written about this, so I don't want to talk about it.

Noted action director Alin Amin will join him as a co-judge. The show is still being planned and Zee TV will launch a couple of other reality shows like Dance Ke Superstars before that.” It remains to be seen how the audience reacts to Sunny's stint on TV and if Jaanbaaz becomes as big as a hit as his last movie Yamla Pagla Deewana. Simple beauties on TV A few years ago, actresses in television serials were decked up from head to toe. Faith-sake
Radhika, a 20-year-old BBA student, observes Navratri fasts for they instill in her a sense of self-discipline. Many Gen-Y youngsters, just like Radhika, observe the fasts for reasons aplenty. Chetan Agra, 21, BSc student from Ludhiana started observing fasts inspired by his mother. Now in his third year, Chetan observes fast for all the nine days. "Not only these provide the much-needed break for the body, they also uplift me mentally as well as spiritually," says Chetan. "Regulated diet keeps the body light, ensures better concentration while studying, praying and meditating," he adds. Sakshi Bajaj, another student, started observing fasts ever since she remembers. "I must have been in fifth standard when I kept my first Navratri fast. I have been regular ever since," says the girl who is preparing for her LLM entrance exam. "It's matter of sheer faith for me. Doing this twice a year instills a sense of peace and perseverance, which helps me sail through the year," says Sakshi. Radhika is happy and proud that fasts give her a chance to test her temptations. "Being a college-goer, fast food is a given. Mostly hanging around cafeterias, I pick up pizzas and burgers. But fasting ensures that I curb the temptation. Abstinence they say is the way to gain spiritual heights," she confides. While dieticians recommend fasting to cleanse the system, Navratri fasts have all the steps inbuilt. "No fried and fast food, plenty of fruits, diet rich in calcium, early dinner is what we suggest for fasting. Navratri fasts fulfill all that. Colourful food, fruit, pumpkin, milk, curd gets the much needed vitamins, antioxidants and calcium into the system," says Aditi Mehrotra, diet consultant. "It detoxifies your body and rests the overworked digestive system," she adds. Each of our religious ritual has a scientific base. The two navratras, Chaitra and Sharad, prepare our body for the change in season, fasting leads to total overhauling of the body. Navratri also has social and religious gains. People usually offer fruits in temples, which are distributed amongst all; even in the lesser privileged members of the society get their share. People come together for celebrations, thereby providing the much-needed social glue that we require today. Good thoughts and observing 'brahmcharya' are a given in a fast. "What we think has immediate impact on our life. Prayers cleanse one's heart and soul. Each day a different form of the goddess is worshipped, which help one overcome different obstacles in life," says astrologer Madan Gupta Spatu. mona@tribunemail.com |
Glimpses of Punjab
A curious mix of graphics and photographs that captures glimpses of Punjab is on display at the Government Museum and Art Gallery-10. The first solo exhibition by painter-photographer, 24-year-old Sumeet D Arora has some 45 photographs. Unseen facets of Harmandir Sahib, rural sports, traditional 'gur' making - Sumeet's photographs are a journey in time. Some of them, a curious combination of graphic and photograph, represent luxurious Punjab with Sikhs riding elephants. The last two photographs raises out curiosity. "These are my favourites," Sumeet offers an explanation, "These are migrants who have taken to Punjabi ways. They even speak Punjabi," he adds. (On till Sunday) |

The foodies At first glance, 'Bake Fresh', situated at the beginning of the bustling Ghumar Mandi in Ludhiana, seems like a quaint bakery-cum-coffee shop, but step inside and you are in for loads of surprises. Not only does it offer a variety of cakes and bakery products, but also serves delicacies from Mexican, Lebanese Italian and French cuisine. "We offer only Kathi rolls in Indian food," says Chef Navin, who is from Chandigarh. He insists we taste Lebanese 'Koudban', a dish made of chicken rolls with green chilles and til sauce, and it really has a wonderful taste! "We come here for Mexican Tortillas, Chilly Rellana and Quesdillas, which are not available anywhere else in the city," share Dhruv and Shashank, young professionals who have come to work in the city from Delhi. Although 'Bake Fresh' has outlets in BRS Nagar, Shastri Nagar and Kidwai Nagar, they are all coffee shops. However, this one on Ghumar Mandi Road serves a variety of meals. "Mexican and Lebanese cuisine is very popular among city folks, but there is a select group who go in for Italian and French food," says the owner Manik Bajaj, who is planning to go to a bakery summer school in the UK soon to hone his skills. Another interesting concept is 'your chef', where the chef can be booked for two hours and will demonstrate live how any dish of your choice is made. The mother and daughter duo of Mehak and Meena, owners of 'Bows and Wraps' nearby, often come here for a 'snacky' lunch and vouch for Mushroom Dizzy Buns and Chocolite Cake with coffee. It seems a popular joint with college students as well, though a couple of them, Ritu and Hitant, rue the lack of 'happy hours' here. Serving a variety of 21 kinds of bread, Bake Fresh also boasts of a variety of coffees, mocktails and shakes, such as Ferro Roche and Kit Kat by coffee expert Praveen Sharma. |
