Game for it?
IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY
Mona

How about some serious car chase, dancing on visual cues or countering a terrorist attack this weekend? That too in the comfort of an AC? This week we recommend exploring the amazing world of gaming. And folks if you don't own a PlayStation or Xbox, do not worry. Video parlours in the city are offering gaming pleasure at an affordable price.

A multi-billion dollar industry, video games have caught the fancy of children and adults alike. Though mostly reproached for encouraging lack of exercise, strain on eyes and making kids' violent, the games have their flip side as well. Recent studies claim that they promote better hand-eye coordination and improve cognitive skills.

Forget the good and the bad, a day of gaming wouldn't harm much. Just think of the adrenaline rush while on a car chase with four others! If dancing is your passion, try Dance Dance Revolution that makes you swing to musical and visual cues. If you follow the pattern well, you can choose your music too. Be a God of War and navigate Kratos through a long series of tests, trials and mazes to reach goals. In the course of the game, lose some weapons and gain other deadly ones.

Practice a sport (you have plenty to choose from cricket, volleyball, baseball, golf, wrestling) on screen, before you try it in real. Or challenge your mental faculties in the world of Star Wars, Modern Warfare or Jurassic Park…video gaming offers immense options.

Starting from Rs 20 an hour, you can find a video parlour in your vicinity. There are few in the shopping malls too. The one in Fun Republic, Mani Majra offers the game cards for Rs 25 a game in the ambience of a mall. Indulgence Gaming Arena-35 offers 3D experience with chairs that twist and turn when you are speeding in a car, though it comes at a price of Rs 200 an hour. This place offers night LAN parties and tournaments as well. Who knows you could be the next pro-video gamer in the city!

Bowl your blues away

Not happy with gaming? Try Bowling. One of the most popular recreations around the world registers its presence in the tricity. Times Square, Sector 14, Panchkula, offers it for Rs 150 per head per game (20 shots). With evidence of Bowling in ancient Egypt and Europe during the Middle Ages, Bowling is for anyone from age three to 103! So, hooking a ball this Saturday?

Master Chef in making?

Are you looking for a platform to explore your culinary talent? Confederation of Indian Industry is organising the 11th edition of Kitchen & Beyond 2011(CII) soon. To pep up the show CII invites amateur cooks to send recipes and bring a cooked dish to be judged by Kandla Nijhowne, semi-finalist in Master Chef India. First Day First Show
Thank you, Bazmee, says Chandigarh crowd

Multi-starrer Thank You has gone down well with the Chandigarh folks. Some happy faces, others still laughing, the scene after the first show was an exact opposite of what critics anticipated. Directed by Aneez Bazmee, the flick is based on three philanderer husbands — Bobby Deol, Irrfan Khan and Suneil Shetty. Sonam Kapoor, Rimi Sen and Celina Jaitley play their spouses, respectively.

Akshay Kumar plays a detective known for reuniting warring couples. Was the plot akin to Biwi No 1, No Entry and Masti able to create a laugh riot? Viewers give an answer.

Super fun
Awesome comedy. Akshay Kumar rocks, Bobby Deol has looked handsome after a long time. It's a fun riot, must watch!
Amandeep Kaur, Banker

Amazing comedy
The flick is super hilarious. More than the movie, I was chuckling seeing the aunty sitting next to me. She enjoyed every scene and almost fell off the seat a few times. Theatre was reverberating with peals of laughter. — Priyanka, B Tech student

Show stealer
The plot is appealing, actors have done a good job, but it's the witty dialogues that steal the show. The fine actor that Irrfan Khan is, his banters with Rimi Sen, who plays his wife, are absolutely amazing. —Bhoopinder Singh, banker

Boys must watch it
It's an interesting film charting Men Are From Mars, Women From Venus. Though the twain shall never meet, yet, it's a good warning to cheating partners that women must not be fooled. — Shilpa, CS student

Crowd puller
Songs Razia gundon main phas gayi and Pyar do pyar lo are good entertainers. Though a Salman fan, I couldn't help enjoying Akshay's work. — Manish Kumar, BA student.

IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY
The rosy feeling
Poonam Bindra

A beautiful garden retreat in the heart of Ludhiana, the popular Rose Garden was conceptualised by Dr MS Randhawa and inaugurated by the then President Giani Zail Singh in 1972. This beautiful garden is spread over a sprawling area, which originally had 24 wells. Now, the wells are covered by artistically manicured foliage figures of
different animals.

It seems like a congenial place to unwind and is frequented visited by visitors of all age groups whether it is the children, youngsters, middle-aged or the senior citizens. Musical fountains with the backdrop of lilting old melodies greet as one enters the garden. Rightly termed as the 'lungs of the city', each area has a notification of the gardener tending to it and there is a prize for the best one!

Besides the beautiful roses, the Amaltas in full bloom form a carpet on the ground. A 60-ft well-structured mural of a lady writing a letter to her lover overlooks the main walking paths, which have fountains in between. Ducks and scampering rabbits greet you further down.

For refreshments, there is the Verka booth next to the hillock. "The mornings here are wonderful," says Praveen Narang, a social activist, who swears by this happy place.

She adds, "There are aerobics, yoga and karate classes. For the earnest walkers, there are plenty of walking paths along with background music. However, she rued the fact that the citizens litter the garden especially on Sundays. Thje swing for kids is also in a bad condition.

However, with ample and regularised parking space and a hassle free garden, the Rose Garden sure is a desired destination for people here.

Wizard of words
Veteran Bollywood lyricist Gopal Das 'Neeraj' says the era of melody is making a comeback
SD Sharma

Poetry is beauty of the soul; being human is fortunate, but being a poet is eternal bliss," opines Hindi litterateur and veteran Bollywood lyricist Neeraj, who is in Chandigarh on the invitation of Haryana Sahitya Academy and Department of Public Relations and Cultural Affairs for a symposium.

An academician and poet Gopal Das Saxena, better known as Neeraj to his fans, admirers and literary connoisseurs, is undeniably among the few literary luminaries who have maintained a tradition of excellence in Hindi literature. He is credited with over 35 publications.

He has penned down over a 100 Bollywood hits such as Ae Bhai Zara Dekh Ke Chalo, Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya. Dil Aaj Shayar Hai, Likhe Jo Khat Tujhe, among others.

Popular among girls

Born in a village Puravali, near Etawah, in Uttar Pradesh on January 4, 1924, Neeraj had to face a lot of struggle initially. But his handsome personality and ornate poetry made him immensely popular, especially among young girl students in the private colleges he taught, much to annoyance of the colleagues and management.

"Itna badman huye ham zamaane mein ke sadiyan lagg jayengi hame bhulaane mein," he quips.

Best of Bollywood

"I enjoyed working with the likes of Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Sachin Dev Burman, Shanker Jaikishan, among others," he shares. Recalling the making of Ae bhai zara in blank verse, he adds, "SJ duo had a problem and then I made the tune.

Similarly, Dev Anand wanted emotion, romance, satire and pain for a song in Prem Pujari and I instantly offered Rangila re. Melody king SD Burman was devoted to music 24 hours a day."

The dark days

"After I lost great friends Jaikishan and SD Burman, I curtailed my work and took to literature. However, I kept penning lyrics and I am fortunate that my songs are still popular," he says.

On Harivansh Rai Bachchan

"Poets are born, not made and my friend Harivansh Rai was an omniscient poet of chhayavadi tradition. Amitabh Bachchan, who has played in my lap, only promoted his poetry but had no hand in the making of the poet," he says.

Future tense

"With a change in the tastes of people item numbers are becoming popular, but I am yet to listen to one. The era of melody is making a comeback and is here to stay," predicts Neeraj.

TROUBLE SHOOTER
Do what you say
Simmi Waraich

My son is 19-years-old and very intelligent, but he is extremely lazy; prefers to sleep till 12 pm. He is very unhygienic and despite my constant pestering he does not get a haircut, does not shave or cut his nails. He is not even able to help in the family responsibilities because of his laziness. Please help.

If he is doing fine in school and does things he likes doing then it is not mere laziness, but a lack of discipline. Usually, parents may ask a child to follow a routine but are unable to implement it. Remember one thing, decide on a few things you would like him to follow at home and discuss it with him. Ensure that it gets done. Implement what you say. Praise often. Teaching and encouraging your children to become responsible usually starts by requiring them to do certain chores around the house like taking out the garbage, washing the dishes, or folding clothes and cleaning their cupboards. Be firm about these. Be clear and specific about what you want. Explain the reason behind assigning these tasks, as it will help him develop values. Spend time as a family at meals, go out for a walk or a movie to build a bond.

Set the rules

My daughter is 16-years-old. She was a responsible child earlier but slowly she has stopped helping out at home. She is more interested in dressing up, doing her hair and makeup. This year she threatened to eat some pills when I scolded her over the length of her skirt and actually did so. She was in hospital for five days. How can I discipline her?

Stay in touch with her teachers — see if she is falling behind in school as well? Monitor her friends. Get to know them. Introduce her and meet family or friends where the children are focused and following careers. However, do not compare her with them. Be clear about what clothes she can wear and what she cannot. Discuss it with her and reach an agreement.

Then stick to what has been decided. Do not change rules under pressure. However, be reasonable - you can discuss with other parents to see what they allow and then reach a balance of what you are comfortable with.

Determine what behaviour you wish to change in your child. Set a specific set of goals for every good deed and then reward it; show the child that good behaviour means better rewards.

Remains of ‘Mona Lisa’ to be dug up

The remains of a woman believed to have been the model for Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa will be exhumed in a bid to recreate her face.Professor Silvano Vinceti, a modern-day Indiana Jones investigator, will lead the team that will exhume the remains. The coffin of noblewoman Lisa Gherardini Del Giocondo is believed to be buried at the Saint Orsola convent in Florence. She is thought to have been the woman behind the enigmatic smile of the 'Mona Lisa', the 500-year-old painting that is one of the most recognisable images in the world.

Vinceti said the aim of the dig is to find her bones and extract the DNA so they can rebuild her face.

"An initial survey of the building has revealed a 500-year-old crypt in the grounds below and we firmly believe it is the resting place of Lisa Gherardini, who was the inspiration for 'Mona Lisa'," he said."We will compare the DNA that we find in the bones from the former convent to those of remains in two other churches in Florence where two of her children are buried," the daily quoted him as saying.Lisa Gherardini, who died in 1542, was the wife of a rich silk merchant named Francesco del Giocondo. In Italy, the Mona Lisa is known as La Gioconda.

Historians have already discovered her death certificate, which gives the resting place as the Saint Orsola convent.

Digging will begin at the end of the month. Ground searching radar will be used to locate the crypt. — IANS

Jasmine SinghTrack: Dead Meat - Designer Drug Feat

Singer: Justin Pearson

Genre: House/Dubstep

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHCFzyVAIBo

This is a unique track, a fine combination of House and Dubstep. The track starts as a house track and after a while it is converted to a Dubstep. This gets even better when it ends on a house style again. This is what makes the track amazing, the ups and downs here and there. The producer had taken from house to Dubstep and then back to House in a very neat way. Again the track flows freely and finely from one genre to another. Both the music styles are my favourite, which makes this track one of my favourite. You can foot tap to this track endlessly that makes it even more likeable.

(As told to Jasmine Singh)

These are a few of her favourite things

Minissha Lamba loves herself and, more than that, she loves the work she does. She says, "It's good if you make your hobby your career, and it works out well. Acting was something that was always there at the back of my mind, so when I took it as a career, I was relaxed because I was doing something which I always loved doing." She talks to us about looking good and staying in shape.

The pretty actress thinks looking good is very important for a celebrity. "Along with acting, when you are a celebrity, looking good is a must. Nowadays, staying fit too is important. I believe I need to shed a few more kilos and get in shape. I am working hard, but I still have to work on it," says Minissha, who is currently shooting for Sirish Kunder's Joker.

Apart from acting, food is something which keeps Minissha happy. "I am a big foodie, and I love food. And whenever I am tensed or stressed, I believe good food beats it for me. But there is another side too, and that is I put on weight very easily. I have to work out really hard to stay in shape," she sighs.

About her workout regime, she says, "I enjoy weight training, so I do that on a regular basis. As a rule, I work out three days a week for a duration of about 45 minutes. Cardio exercises, weight training and stretches make up my fitness regime. I practice yoga three days a week. It enhances my flexibility and improves my focus as well."

Apart from working out, she also loves water sports. "Swimming is something I love doing. I love the summer because I can swim for long hours. I was a champion swimmer, representing my school in inter-level tournaments," she concludes. —HRM

Rani's experiment with fashion

Rani Mukerji
Fashion mantra: Rani Mukerji

Rani Mukerji is all over the place these days. Apart from winning rave reviews for her latest film, she has also kept people fascinated with her new-found sense of fashion. She is experimenting with fashion, and doesn't mind being bold. She talks about shopping and her love for jewellery.

Memories
Since I was in the VI standard, I started collecting jewellery. We went to Jaipur once, from where I collected some massive and impressive earrings, which I have till today. I want my niece to wear them when she grows up.

Keep it safe
Like my clothes, I take care of my jewellery. I am very particular and meticulous about where all my stuff is. I am very organised, and all my belongings are where they belong.

Best friend
Of course, diamonds are women's best friends, and I have a special connection with them. I love diamonds. My first pieces of jewellery, which I bought with my money were two pairs of diamond earrings.

Street shopper
I love collecting jewellery, be it junk jewellery or the real stuff. I pick them up from streets, designer stores or wherever. Junk jewellery is best in Causeway Colaba, and in Delhi also, one gets good styles.

Mix-n-match
Nowadays, you can mix-n-match a simple chain with a bigger pendant with any clothes, or wear jhumkas with a Western dress. I love today's fashion, as you can wear what you like. I love mix-n-match, and you will always find me experimenting with fashion.

Lopez gives her best to stay in B-town

Caterina Lopez
Go India: Caterina Lopez

She shares her lineage with Jennifer Lopez but unlike her famous cousin, Caterina Lopez is trying to make a mark in Bollywood.

The trained salsa and hip-hop dancer makes her entry into the Hindi film industry with an item song in the upcoming film Bhindi Baazar Inc, which stars veterans like Kay Kay Menon and Shilpa Shukla.

"It is not easy to get into Bollywood. The audition was tough and being an outsider, I found it difficult to master the dance moves, especially the hand gestures but I am getting the hang of it now," Caterina said.

The 23-year-old actress, who is planning to take up classes in Hindi, is keen to have a long association with Bollywood, unlike many other stars who fade away due to the language barrier.

"Trust me...I am making an effort to learn Hindi and want to act the proper way instead of being dubbed... That is my goal.. I am taking tutorials for Hindi on an one-on-one basis...It will be for 5 days a week. I am trying hard to make my mark and I hope the Indian audience accepts me," adds Caterina.

Unlike her cousin J.Lo who is a pop diva, Caterina is reluctant to try her hand in singing and admits she is more passionate about dancing and acting.

"I have no plans to sing, it is not my cup of tea. I am more into dancing and acting," says the debutante.

"I do have some Hollywood projects but I am not allowed to speak about it.” — PTI
