Cricket fever to rise
Akash Ghai
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 3
With the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) set to host the Indian Premier League matches this month, it seems that the cricket fever will live on.Fans will once again get a chance to see their favourite players Sachin Tendulkar, Dhoni, Yuvraj and Sehwag in action, as four matches will be played at the PCA stadium, which played host to the highly-charged India-Pak World Cup semifinal on March 30. Three matches will be held at Dharamsala.

As getting tickets for the semifinal match was not less than a war-like situation, cricket buffs this time have already started making attempts to ensure a seat in the stadium during the T-20 ties.

“Ticket-related queries have started pouring in. With Team India winning the World Cup, cricket fever has reached a crescendo. Nobody wants to give IPL matches a miss,” said PCA spokesperson Capt Sushil Kapoor.

The PCA authorities claimed that they were ready for the matches as everything was in place.

“As the semifinal match was played at the stadium, there seems to be no need of making arrangements again. Our stadium is ready and we have handed it over to team owners,” said GS Walia, joint secretary of the PCA.

A ‘victory of sorts’ for bookies
Akash Ghai/TNS

Chandigarh, April 3
With India’s lifting the cricket World Cup trophy last night, it was also a kind of victory of bookies. At the start of the World Cup-2011 on February 19, the bookies had predicted India’s win. And the night of April 2 just corroborated the fact, how true the prediction was.

A report in this regard was published in these columns on February 20, a day after the World Cup had kicked off in Bangladesh. India had been termed as the hot favourite of the tournament by the bookies with a betting rate of Rs 3 that means a person, who had placed Rs 1,000 on the team, ended up earning Rs 3,000. Sri Lanka figured at the second place with a rate of Rs 4.

Surprisingly, both teams were there in the title clash last night.

Call it coincidence or something else, in the last World Cup in 2007, which had taken place in West Indies, the bookies had predicted the win of Australia much in advance. The rate for the “Kangroos’ was set at Rs 2.50 that time (The Tribune had reported this on March 14, 2007, a day after the ICC World Cup-2007 began in West Indies).

Surprisingly, the result was not different, as Australia had emerged as the championship that time.

Shockingly, an SMS was being circulated since April 1, which mentioned: ‘Sri Lanka would make a total of 275 runs while batting first in the final. Sehwag would be out in the first over. Sachin would be out between 90 and 95 runs and India would win by one wicket.’ While the final line of the SMS mentioned ‘Happy Fools Day’, the first two predictions in the SMS turned out to be right.

According to an estimate, over Rs 50,000 crore changed hands in this illegal business during this World Cup.
