Kharar, March 9
A suspected thief broke into a house in Gillco Enclave on the Chandigarh-Kharar highway on Wednesday and made a futile attempt to steal the belongings of the occupants after gagging a 13-year-old boy and stuffing him into the box of a bed.

The incident took place between 11:30 am and noon when Amrit, a class 6 student of St Xavier School, returned home after appearing for an examination. On his way he met his mother who told him she would be back at the house soon.

Amrit told the police when he entered his home closed the door behind him he heard someone knocking on it. When he opened the door he found a man standing, who told the boy his father had sent him to paint something in the house and collect payment. The moment the man stepped inside he tied a muffler around the boy’s mouth to silence him and then shoved him into the bed-box.

The police feel the suspect had some accomplices waiting outside the house to warn him whenever the boy’s mother came back. However, when she turned up eventually she did not find Amrit at home and noticed all the doors and windows were open. She looked for the boy on the rooftop also but could not locate him. She then heard voices coming from inside the bed-box. To her horror she found her son gagged and lying inside the box in a semiconscious state.

Amrit’s father, Gurpinder Singh Brar, who owns a motorcycle dealership on Landran Road, told the police nothing was missing from his home. The family members think the suspects must have sensed the boy’s mother approaching the house and fled without stealing anything. “They wouldn’t have anticipated she’d return so soon”, said some relatives of the boy.

The boy was examined by doctors in Kharar and is said to be “normal but quite terrified”. Police officials said a case in this connection would be filed.Meanwhile, according to the cops, Amrit had identified the man who entered his home. In his statement to the police he said the suspect had undertaken the task to paint doors at his home. “The suspect told Amrit as the latter’s father had not paid him Rs 2,000 for the paint job he (Amrit) was being targeted,” said police officials

Chandigarh, March 9
With just two days left for the clash between West Indies and Ireland for the ICC-Cricket World Cup Championship to be held at the PCA Stadium, Mohali, both teams sweat out hard at the venue during their practice session here today.

While the Caribbean team worked out in the morning session, the Irish team underwent training during afternoon.

Both teams were seen working hard on the nets, as March 11 match is important for both teams to move up in the points tally.

Earlier, the West Indies team after a long warm-up session on the ground went straight into the nets. Kieron Pollard was observed trying his hand in the straight flat shots. As the player likes to send the ball over the boundary through flat smashes, he seems to be blissful after his practice on the nets.

Team’s captain Darren Sammy and batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan also spent more time on the nets, as they both have yet to come up with a brilliant knock from their bat.

On the other hand, pace bowler Kemar Roach bowls out a long spell, as he is looking forward to bother the Irish with his bowling attack.

Left arm leg spinner Sulimen Benn after bowling in the nets was noticed practicing some sweep shots.

Later, in the afternoon, the Irish team joined the nets. The Irish team was notably seen aggressive, while batting in the nets. Kevin O’ Brien, the century-hitter in just 50 balls, spent a long time while batting in the nets before vigorously bowling. Eighteen-year old young left arm spinner George Dockrell and right arm fast bowler Boyd Rankin was also present in the nets where they firmly worked on the bowling.

Taking time out for noble cause

The West Indies players also met HIV+ people living in Mohali under the scheme of ICC and UNAID slogan of “Run out AIDS”.The Caribbean team took out time from its practice session to support the “Think Wise” campaign.

Campaign ambassador Ramnaresh Sarwan and skipper Darren Sammy called for a greater understanding for the people affected with HIV.The players met 10 HIV affected people living in Mohali.

“It was interesting to get the opportunity to meet these people and understand some of the issues that they face on a day-to-day basis, the interaction was that people affected by the disease are no different and that they must not be discriminated,” said Sarwan.

The players also played a fun match with them. The players also presented them their autographs.

Date with St Soldier students

The under-14 cricket team of St Soldier International School was also among the students, who interacted with the players, whereas the junior team of the school interacted with the Ireland team during the net session. The local players were seen taking autographs and clicking pictures with the international cricketers.

Young bowler George Dockrell, who admires Daniell Vitorie, also gave away bowling tips to the budding cricketers.

After the interaction, the city-based players got a chance to practice with the Irish team and their favourite player, Kevin O’ Brien.

Some children also got official T-shirts signed by the players.

“It was a proud moment for us to share the ground with our favourite players. They treated us like their team only and we also got gifts from them, we will remember this moment throughout our lives,” said Vivek, Ashish, Sahil, Manjeet and Arnav, members of the local school team.

World Cup evokes mixed response at PU hostels
Anuj Malhotra

Chandigarh, March 9
India vs Netherlands match was given a miss by girls at Panjab University hostels today. Cricket enthusiasm was missing in most hostels, where the daily soaps had taken over the cricket match.

In the evening, when a majority of Indians were glued to India-Netherlands clash, Girls Hostel No. 7 had tuned into a news channel for the latest nation updates.

“Girls in my hostel are not interested in watching cricket matches at all and even I am not a cricket fan. The prime time is taken over by reality shows. Besides, “Pyaar Ki Ek Ye Kahaani” and “Geet Hui Sabse Paraayi” are a big hit among girls here. Their favourite is a popular reality show “Shaadi 3 Crore Ki,” said Kuljeet Kaur Kangura, a hostel inmate and a student of physics department.

A few girls were not even aware of the ongoing series of World Cup matches, particularly the India vs Netherlands match. Asha, a clerk in the hostel, said: “Since girls are busy with their coaching classes or departmental activities, only a few girls watch cricket matches. Only one out of 100 girls want to watch the cricket matches.”

From indifference to World Cup at girls’ hostel to a totally opposite reaction of interest in cricket was witnessed at girls Hostel No 3, Sarojini Hall, where a group of girls were watching the cricket match.

“Though I am not a die-hard fan of cricket, I am following the matches in this World Cup. The last two or three matches have been quite interesting and several girls in our hostel watch them,” said Srishti Chauhan of department of laws.
