As real as it gets…
Get over dramatic, heavy weight, larger than life dialogues…film makers would rather have it real There's more in common between the movies Band Baja Baraat and Do Dooni Chaar than just their writer-Habib Faisal. Both flicks have cashed upon the aspirations of common man, of Mr Duggal (played by Rishi Kapoor), a schoolteacher's wish to buy a small car, of Shruti Kakker (Anushka Sharma) and Bittu Sharma's (Ranveer Singh) desire to open a wedding planning company. "The characters were identifiable, almost real. I couldn't have given them melodramatic dialogues," says Habib. The trend of using colloquial or as writers term it, the real language of people, has replaced the "over the top" emotional lines of yesteryears. So, there are movies like No One Killed Jessica among the more recent ones Yeh Saali Zindagi, Peepli Live in which language is of, by and for, the real people. To abuse or not Don't we curse in our day-to-day life? Aren't curses just another way of expressing anger, disgust or even sharing our happiness, then why create a fuss over it?" Raj Kumar Gupta, director of No One Killed Jessica justifies the language used in the film. Since the movie was based on a real life incident, he says, the real effect could be produced only with spoken language. However, Habib feels people in India are yet to get used to curses being hurled on the big screen. "It shifts the attention from the seriousness of a dialogue." Keep it authentic Business was pronounced as binness, time was tame, then we heard words like bhukhad, raita`85Band Baaja Baraat was as talked about for its storyline and acting as about its colloquial language. But Habib feels that the box office collection of the movie doesn't mean that the same idea should be replicated in other movies. "Each to its own. What matters is a dhinchak idea. When you have a movie like Rajneeti, you can afford to have a dialogue like Karara Jawaab Milega, but when it comes to movies set in the modern, urban backdrop, revolving around middle class people, you need to have a different approach altogether. " Vouch for quality City based lyricist, Munna Dhiman, who wrote songs for Nishabd is apprehensive of the fact that in a bid to make films' stories more realistic, Bollywood might lose out on the quality. "Till storyline justifies the use of everyday language, it's fine. We must not forget that Bollywood's prime aim is entertainment. It gives people a break from their drab and routine life." Abhishek Sharma, director of Tere Bin Laden couldn't agree less. He believes that script dictates the rules of making a film. "Noorah, a character in my film is a Pakistani Punjabi. We chose simple Punjabi lines for him, which were well appreciated by the audience." And then, we have Dabangg that raises questions on what audiences like. "Just a paisa vasool film" is that the answer? |
So, Mohit Chauhan would have been a
shepherd!
What others call stage performance, Bollywood singer Mohit Chauhan calls 'soul testing,' something that he loves to do more than often. In the city to perform on the concluding day of Rose Festival, Mohit who has a string of successful songs from the likes of Tujhey Bhula diya (Anjaana Anjani), Masakkali (Delhi 6) to Pehli Baar Mohabbat (Kaminey) is not an interviewers delight - you have to put words in his mouth. But once Mohit gets rolling... he sure is a delight. Check it out I don't know if I sing well I try to sing every number to the best of my ability, and I am glad people like it. I believe every number is special with a soul of its own. I just try to sing every song with sincerity. (Laughs) Now you say people think I am a soulful singer, I will believe it. I fly with the song I don't do any special preparations before recording any number, nothing like deep breathing or meditation. I close my eyes, think about the song, get into the head of the song and fly with it. (Net result is songs like Yeh Dooriyan (Love Aaj Kal) Tum Sey Hi (Jab We Met). Music to me is something that connects to the soul. All the same, simplicity of heart reflects in music as well. Destiny + hard work = good going Yes, I do invest faith in destiny. My life is moving according to my karma, there is a pattern to life and things move accordingly. Nevertheless, destiny alone is not everything; hard work and dedication are also vital ingredients for success and a good life. I am a solo artist We no longer work for the band Silk Route, however the members do perform with me off and on. It is not difficult to sustain a music band in India, though it definitely calls for lot of work. I am working on my solo album Fitoor. Presently, I am collecting songs for it and will start recording pretty soon. If not a musician, I would have been a shepherd If not a Bollywood singer I would have been a farmer or a shepherd. They don't have complicated lives and they live close to nature. Besides, I would love to be one with nature. Ranbir carries my voice well I have never given much thought to it but I guess actor Ranbir Kapoor can lip sync my songs well. Deepti Naval's next I am singing two songs for Deepti Naval's upcoming movie Do Paise Ki Dhoop. Look out for them! jasmine@tribunemail.com |
No Gully fashion for Marc
Believe every word he says about the Indian Fashion Industry. Believe him when he says, "Half a dozen regional fashion weeks that we have across the country are a mockery of fashion in India. Designers put their old collections on display, there are hardly any buyers and even guests are randomly invited." When Marc Robinson, second male super model after Milind Soman gives his take on the fashion scene in India, he has to be taken seriously, "I can't risk my brand for the sake of these so called fashion shows. It's like asking Sachin and Sehwag to play Gully cricket." In the city on Sunday to shortlist contestants for the Miss India pageant, he speaks his mind on fashion; absence of male models and strategy to assure that Miss India does well at the international beauty pageants. "In my times, we focused only on our modeling careers. Now the premise to become a model is to get a break in Bollywood. Unless fashion houses and designers give male models due importance, the scene wouldn't change for the better." His association with the fashion industry is more than just as a former model. Marc is the most sought after fashion choreographer not only in India, but also abroad. "Besides the two major fashion weeks in India and the Indian Bridal Fashion week, I direct the Dubai Fashion week and other international events." As for his job profile of a fashion choreographer, he says, it's much more than merely teaching models how to walk the right way on ramp. "Directing fashion shows includes taking care of lights, music, stage backdrop." Now about the task he is here for, short listing contestants for Miss India. "This time the approach has been proactive. There are many rounds of auditions that girls will have to go through to reach the final round." And the qualities in them he is looking for, "A complete package in terms of beauty and brains." ashima@tribunemail.com |

Most reality shows are rigged
Celebrity reality shows, you still think there is something left to talk about the melodramatic-rigged-sleazy-fake dramas. Well, if you thought so, wait till you hear it from Vindu Dara Singh, winner of reality show Bigg Boss 3, the actor has a lot of dough to offer on the same. In the city for the launch of Tech Italy's Herbal range of hair products, Vindu is all revved up about the Punjabi movie, The Lion Of Punjab, wherein he plays an honest inspector Balbir Singh. The
Lion Of Punjab
This movie will change the face of Punjabi cinema. Akshay Kumar would also want to do a Punjabi film if certain matters like piracy are sorted out. The Lion Of Punjab is a flick that represents Punjab in the true light. Zor Ka Jhatka
It is an awesome show but definitely not for celebrities. There is a lot of risk involved in show, which celebrities discovered later. Overall though, the game show hosted by Shahrukh Khan was fun and exciting. As I said before, it wasn't meant for celebrities Every channel wants a rigged reality show
This is no longer a secret, every channel wants a reality drama and most of them are of course rigged. However, reality shows like Big Boss, or dance and music-based ones are still good to watch. But, I can't understand the ones where a girl is cheating on boyfriend and someone doing a loyalty test! (No prizes for decoding the name) Maa Exchange, baap of reality shows
Watch out for Maa Exchange, a reality show where maa, like the lady of the house goes to another house and takes charge of the house for some days. My wife, Dina went to celebrity couple Tanaaz Bhaktiyaar's house. It was maddening; Bhaktiyaar broke all rules of the show. jasmine@tribunemail.com |

From pumpkin to
carrot
Benjamin Franklin once quoted "In general, mankind, since the improvement of cookery, eats twice as much as nature requires." Does that line ring a bell? Do you think with so much scrumptious food around, we are failing to curb our appetite? Are we responsible for not being able to keep our bellies tucked in? All of us can recall making hollow promises a thousand times of controlling our diet but all such resolutions lack commitment and thus we fail. Then, there is this lot of conscious people who know the importance of keeping fit. There is no harm in accepting the 'fatty' issues of life and dealing with them for better. We speak to two such individuals who made things possible around them not for the sake of others but because they wanted to be in shape. Power-packed performance
A mother to two and a housewife, Deepti is today an ardent yoga student at Anil Juneja's F 'n' Y, Panchkula. She is happy the way her life has taken a turn. It's through yoga that she has been able to rediscover her fitter self. "After marriage I had given up on skirts and jeans. I stuck mostly to salwars. But today I am back to the days of yore. Power Yoga not just helped me gain fitness, also confidence." She started doing Power yoga five months back. "The first month was discouraging, as I could not see much difference. I started noticing a change from the second month of the training. And today it is a part of my routine". She takes pride in the fact that she doesn't miss a single day of her yoga sessions. "I have lost over 10 kilos in the last five months. My waist size has reduced down to 28 from 34 inches." Benefits of Power yoga are more than mere fitness. "I had a cesarean due to which I had developed a recurring back ache.
The yoga techniques keep my body toned." It is very important to follow a healthy diet too. "I make sure that I don't skip meals." Her secret of a toned body is; "Thanks to naukaasan I have been able to deal with the bulging belly. The change in me has changed my lifestyle drastically and I am more content." — Deepti Mittal, 32 Business of losing
A hectic schedule leaves one with very little time to bother about fitness. For Vivek, it is different. "I make sure that I wake up early and do my exercises everyday. I again hit the gym in the evenings after I finish my work." But five years back, it was a different story. "I weighed almost 150 kilos then. Today I weigh 80 kilos, all thanks to my routine." A change of lifestyle made things possible for him. "I gave very little thought earlier to what I ate. Now I understand the importance of eating right along with proper work out." Vivek is very particular about diet. "My daily intake includes more of proteins and less carbs. I have 20 egg whites, 2 liters milk and 750gms to 1kg chicken everyday." He burns 1000 calories every morning, while doing cardio. While evening sessions are all about weight training. "My life has taken a U-turn and I feel more confident today. I am also a part-time spinning teacher." — Vivek Kumar,

Make the most of your shape
Sachin Kalra Everyone has a distinct body shape; however female bodies are commonly classified as having body shapes: pear, apple, ruler, and hourglass. And as all body shapes are not the same, they require different methods to reach weight loss goals. Here are some tips to identify your body shape and sculpt it with the best possible exercises.
PEAR Pear shape body types tend to have larger lower bodies and smaller upper bodies. They tend to carry their extra weight below the waistline and usually have small chests and flat stomachs. The weight stored in the lower body is typically not dangerous when it comes to heart health. Workout tips: It is advisable to work on your upper body in order to balance the larger proportions of your lower halves. You will need to focus on strength training for building up the muscles in the upper body. Chin ups, push ups and shoulder press are some examples of the exercises you need to do. Try to thin down your lower half. To achieve this, focus on aerobic activities. This is important to burn overall fat, as well as tone the problem zone areas below the waist. It's best to do strength training and cardio alternate days. However, if you do them together, do the aerobics immediately after the strength training. Great cardiovascular exercises for a pear shaped body include cycling, stair-climbing, walking, running, as well as jumping rope. You should avoid spinning and training activities that involve big impact on your legs and bottom. APPLE Apple shape body types tend to hold most of their weight in the upper body, tummy area and bust. They commonly have slim hips and a large chest and stomach. Apples tend to gain weight above the waist or along the backside. If you are an apple, you could be at risk of some health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. For this reason, you'll probably want to make some changes. The good news is that exercise can improve your apple body shape. With the right training and nutritional guidance, you tend to get results faster than other shapes. However, chances of rebounding are more once the exercise are stopped. Workout tips: Cardiovascular exercise is very necessary for people with an apple body shape. You need to reduce the amount of stored fat in the chest, waist, and belly area. The most effective cardio is interval training. However if you are a beginner you should try walking or cycling first and then come to interval training. You should strive for 30 - 60 minutes of cardio exercises 5-6 times a week. Apples need to maximise their calorie burning potential and build lean muscle tissue to help fire up their metabolism. For that you need to do strength training three times a week. Focus on building muscle in your lower body, while toning arms and midsection. You will also benefit from core building exercises and workouts like Pilates and Yoga. Stair climbing, walking on an incline, running, lunges, dips, back extensions, leg squats, leg presses, rowing, swimming are just some of the exercises suitable for you. RULER Ruler shape body are usually equally thin from bottom to top with not much muscle mass or muscle strength. They mostly have small to medium body frames. These body types tend to put on weight on their stomach and butts, while maintaining slender arms and legs. They have difficulty adding muscles and need to work extra hard for any strength gains. Workout tips: If you are a ruler, you will be able to perform pretty much any activity you want to. However it's best to focus more on strength training then on cardio. Perform cardio activities to help you lose weight in problem areas, such as the buttocks and stomach. You will especially want to build muscle mass through resistance exercise. Resistance exercises for the whole body (hips, legs, shoulders and chest) are important to get an overall balance. Some of the exercises that you can include are squats, bench press, shoulder press and lat pull downs. Focus on stretching and exercise three times a week. HOURGLASS Hourglass is known to be the perfect body shape, due to its balance between upper and lower body halves. Another characteristic of this figure type is a 'defined 'narrow waistline (being about 10 inches smaller). Women with hour-glass body shape tend to put on weight or mass in both their upper and lower bodies while staying more slender through the waist. It is also known as the eight frame and is often considered as the most desirable shape for women. Workout tips: To maintain the balance, you need to follow an exercise routine that concentrates on all areas equally. You should be focusing on both cardio and resistance exercises. Cardio will keep the unwanted weight off. Resistance training will help you maintain a balance between your upper and lower body. Use lightweights to train, as your muscles tend to bulk up faster. You also need to change your training programs frequently to avoid reaching a plateau. Ideally you need to exercise 4-5 times a week for 30 to 40 minutes. Cycling, leg curls & lifts, bicep curls, shoulder presses, fast walking with no incline, upright row and slow jogging are exercises you can include in your workouts. Kalrasachin@hotmail.com |
Health experts have said that eating more than 3 slices of ham a day really does increase bowel cancer risk. The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN), published recommendations designed to reduce the risk of bowel cancer, reports the Daily Mail. The latest findings are bound to muddy the already confusing debate around the nutritional benefits of red meat. Last week, a British Nutrition Foundation study claimed that the majority of adults ate 'healthy amounts' of red meat and there was an 'inconclusive' link to cancer. However, the government insists that people who eat 90g or more of red and processed meat a day should cut back. Cutting down to the UK average of 70g a day can help reduce the risk, the study from SACN said. Red meat contains substances that have been linked to bowel cancer. One compound in particular, ham, which gives red meat its colour, has been shown to damage the lining of the colon in some studies. The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) recommends limiting red meat consumption to 500g a week of cooked weight (about 700g to 750g uncooked). And it says people should avoid processed meats altogether because of the even higher risk of bowel cancer. Processed meat is generally defined as any meat preserved by smoking, curing or salting, or with chemical preservatives added to it. It is thought this process causes the formation of carcinogens, which can damage cells in the body and allow cancer to develop. — ANI |

Emily Blunt fought for ballerina role
Hollywood actress Emily Blunt had to fight her way to the role of a ballerina in the film The Adjustment Bureau as the director was only considering dancers for the part.
George Nolfi, the director of the upcoming thriller wanted to cast a professional dancer but the 28-year-old British actress was determined to get the role, reported Contactmusic. Blunt who shot to fame playing the catty assistant Emily Charlton in The Devil Wears Prada, said that she fell in love with the script which is loosely based on author Philip K Dick's short story, Adjustment Team. "I read the script and then about six weeks later, I finally got a meeting with George. I would call my agency and they would say, 'No, no, they're only meeting dancers'. He said he wanted a dancer and I said, 'I think you're wrong, I think you should have me,'", she said. The actress then underwent a tough training period for the role as she struggled to stick to her strict diet and perfect her dance steps before the shoot. "I had about eight weeks before the movie started so I was in the dance studio and in the gym. It's the most demanding thing, physically, I've done", added Blunt.
