Tipsy tomatoes
Jaspal Bhatti

HAVE you ever seen guys fighting and swearing at each other after eating tomatoes, or heard a woman say, "My husband starts beating me up after having tomatoes", or a husband getting romantic and more expressive after he has eaten a dozen of tomatoes?

It may just be possible now, as recently there was a news item about spiked tomatoes being sold in Gujarat. Gujarat is a dry state and sale of liquor is banned officially. So, Gujaratis inject liquor in tomatoes and sell them at Rs 250 a kg or so.

Narender Modi, who has brought the state’s industry in top gear, should get this idea patented and supply more such laced vegetables and fruits all over the world.

When somebody would order a salad in restaurant, the waiter would inquire, "Sir, do you want it rum-spiked or gin-spiked?" Or on a slice of apple, you may just find the degree of alcohol inscribed — contains 48 per cent alcohol.

After reading this news, a singer modified the popular ghazal of Pankaj Udas, "Mazaa lena hai peene ka to kum kum dheere dheere pee" to "Mazaa lena hai tamatar ka to to kam kam dheere dheere kha." Instead of an encore or wah wah, he got a volley of rotten tomatoes. He requested the audience, "If you have got to throw tomotoes, throw spiked ones please."
