Aman Sood/TNS

Patiala, February 5
A subinspector in the local police and a head ‘munshi’ posted at the Ramnagar police post have been suspended from the force on charges of seeking a bribe and falsely implicating some people in a case involving violations of the Narcotics Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act after seizing poppy husk from suspected drug traffickers.

The police filed a case against SI Ajab Singh and head ‘munshi’ Tejinder Singh under the Prevention of Corruption Act in Samana and is also trying to ascertain the involvement of other officials.

“The two had connived to usurp 21 bags of poppy husk that were seized from drug smugglers. Later, when they got to know senior police officials had been informed, they lodged an FIR against unidentified people mentioning only 15 poppy husk bags had been seized”, police officials said.

Sources said the two cops had given six bags of poppy husk recovered by them to an informer. “Instead of naming any one in the case, Ajab filed an FIR stating unclaimed poppy husk had been recovered. They went on to seek a bribe from a Haryana resident", the sources added.

DSP Samana Sewa Singh Malli, who conducted preliminary investigations into the case, said the two suspended cops had identified the Haryana resident involved in the case. “They were blackmailing him into shell out money, threatening him they would file a case against him for possessing the seized poppy husk. After an inquiry conducted they have been found guilty and I’ve recommended strict action against them to the Patiala senior superintendent of police”, he added.

The police has filed the case against Ajab and Tejinder.

Chandigarh, February 5
A joint team of the food and civil supplies department and the police arrested the owners of two kerosene pumps and recovered 32 fake ration cards from their possession last night.

The accused have been identified as Pritam Pal Singh of Abdedkar Sale Kerosene Pump and Kuldeep Singh, proprietor of a kerosene pump in Mani Majra. The two were today produced in a local court, which remanded them in 14-day judicial custody.

The action was taken on the directions of senior officials of the department after they had received three anonymous complaints alleging that the accused were in possession of fake ration cards.
