Do you mind?
Jasmine Singh

Okay, let's see if you can get this right. What is the first thing that students do before joining a new college? They go from pillar to post in search of a trendy wardrobe! And you thought they were making a list of books to be carried on the first day?

So, when students of the Dental Sciences and Hospital, Panjab University, lodged a protest against a faculty member when he allegedly objected to a final-year student wearing a T-shirt with 'I love New York' written on it, we wonder what's the big deal in all this. Tees with a statement written on them are pretty popular with youngsters; remember Ranbir Kapoor flaunted loads of them in Wake Up Sid. But why this hype and hoopla? Do we need to have a dress code for students? Where does the buck reach, if not stop.

jasmine@tribunemail.com

There is no prescribed dress code for college-going students. At the same time, I feel parents do take note of what their kids are wearing to college. Students too know what to and what not to wear on the campus. If we don't let them take decisions now, when will they differentiate between what is right or wrong?

Meera Sharma, associate professor, GGDSD college

Manavjot, model Tshirts are a rage with youngsters. As long as nothing wierd or objectionable is written on them, there is no reason to raise such a hue and cry. Why do people forget that these are also affordable for students.

Manavjot, model

Ramandeep Kaur, student Fashion is an integral part of college life, however, this does not mean students wear objectionable clothes on campus. I have made two categories in my wardrobe - one is campus and one is non-campus. I have a lot of tees with logos, wacky and funny statements written on them. What is the big deal if a logo on a tee says, ‘I love New York’. I wear one, which is my favourite that says - Pacci Sardarni. Please let us decide what we need to wear.

Ramandeep Kaur, student

You know what it is

A t-shirt (t-shirt or tee) is a shirt that is pulled on over the head to cover most of a person's torso. A T-shirt is usually buttonless and collarless, with a round neck and short sleeves. Beginning in the late 1960s, the t-shirt became a medium for wearable art. Today, many notable and memorable T-shirts produced in the 1970s have become ensconced in pop culture. Examples include the bright yellow happy face t-shirts, The Rolling Stones tops with their "tongue and lips" logo, and the iconic "I ? N Y". Since the 1980s, t-shirts have flourished as a form of personal expression. Screen printed t-shirts have been a standard form of marketing for major consumer products, such as Coca Cola and Mickey Mouse, since the 1970s. Movie and TV t-shirts can have images of the actors, logos, and funny quotes from the movie or TV show. Often, the most popular T-shirts are those that characters wore in the film itself such as Bubba Gump from Forrest Gump and Vote For Pedro from Napoleon Dynamite.

Thai LadyBoys dance to Indian tunes
Mona

— Photo: Parvesh Chauhan Heard of Bangkok's exotic nightlife? A slice from this exciting country, in fact, the spiciest one, is here in our city. LadyBoys from Thailand are set to rock the city's live entertainment scene with a performance at the Tagore Theatre-18.

With their enviable figures, glamorous make-up and just perfect hair, it's almost impossible to make out that these 23 LadyBoys have once been (or are) males, until they speak.

Stunning spectacle

LadyBoys shows are a huge hit across UK and Japan. For their first show 'Fantasy and Feathers 2011', in India, this team has prepared some scintillating numbers. Their performance, a heady mix of dance, comedy, cabaret, adapts according to the city they perform in. For Chandigarh they have lined up a one-and-a-half hour show:

  • Gal Mithi Mithi Bol
  • Challa
  • Sheila Ki Jawani
  • Munni Badnam Hui
  • Waka Waka
  • Kiss Kiss
  • Let's Get The Party

Who are LadyBoys?

Called 'kathoey' or 'katoey, they are originally men who perform as women (most of them have breast implants done). LadyBoys are very much an accepted part of the tolerant Thai community. They work mostly in tourist and entertainment centres, and work or study part time.

Their take

Vivien, 32, has long been part of LadyBoys. "We practice regularly to make our shows one of the best in the world. For inspiration, we go for videos of dances and cabarets around the world, including the Broadway shows," says Vivien.

Their Indian dance teacher, Varun Rana, is all praise for the energy and flexibility (he had a seven-day workshop with them in Thailand), but Vivien's first experience with Indian dance has been not easy. "It's been pretty challenging but we have tried our best," says Vivien, for whom the most exciting part of the job is the chance to travel to various countries. As far as India is concerned, just like every other visitor, they are eyeing Taj Mahal and saris!

Noble cause

The proceeds from the show will be given to the NGO-REEDS. "The amount will be utilised for skill-building in youth in rural Punjab," says Dr R Lamba, director, REEDS.

When & Where

The performance is on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There will be three shows a day at 4 pm, 6 pm and 8 pm. Tickets priced at Rs 600 and Rs 800 can be bought from the Tagore Theatre-18.

It’s raining tomatoes at Italian food festival!
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

— Photo: Parvesh Chauhan Pomodoro - the Italian name for tomatoes - is the food festival that the restaurant by the same name (Pomodora at The Piccadily-22) has come up with. Different from the usual seafood, tandoori or Avadhi food festivals, this 10-day food festival is all about a vegetable than a cuisine. Talking tomatoes, the menu for the food festival includes all things based on this humble, yet happy looking vegetable!

With 35 dishes on the menu card, right from Zuppe (soups) to Insalata (salad) to Antipasti (starters or salads) and Ingresso (main course), all the dishes include tomato as the main ingredient. But the best is the sweet dish, as it also includes tomato!

Jagpreet Pal Singh, general manager, The Piccadily, says, "Considering the love of people for Italian 'khana', we have come up with this unique concept where we have taken a vegetable than a cuisine as the peg for a food festival."

Take your pick

  • In soups, try roasted tomatoes and basil or Gazpacho soup in the vegetarian variety. Non-vegetarians can try Venetian Fish soup or Classic meatball soup.
  • If you are a salad person then try Tuscan, Tabouli or iceburg salad with chicken and spicy tomatoes.
  • Bruschetta, shrimp cocktail and feta stuffed tomatoes too are a must.
  • Served with a glass of wine for the main course, try Balsamic herb ratatouille or sole-filled smothered in tomatoes and Mozzarella. Chicken cacciatore or lasagna is also good to try.
  • The thin crust pizza is definitely a must have.
  • Risotto tomato and garlic is a good choice.
  • For pastas you can choose from Penne Arrabiata, Penne in Salsa Pikkante, spaghetti with meatballs, Spaghetti ala Oro E Gamberi or Stozzapretti.
  • In desserts, try their fresh fruit tarts. It is an interesting mix of strawberry and cherry tomatoes.

Dutch with a classical touch
Deepali Sagar

— Photo: Parvesh Chauhan Indian music isn't only a part of India, it's a part of world heritage. Saskia Rao de Hass, a renowned Dutch musician, has proved this fact after she took to Indian classical music. Although born in the Netherlands, Saskia is a brilliant cellist and has founded The Raga Mala String Quartet. She was in the city for a performance organised by SPIC MACAY at AKSIP School-41B.

Music chooses you

The definition of good music is not the same for everybody. However, there is good music for every moment of the day. Indian classical music is all about - when we want to be on our own and don't need loudness," says Saskia. She sees music as a therapy, as it connects the right and the left hemispheres of the brain. "Music chooses you rather than the other way round," she adds.

Mesmerised audience

The concert left the audience in a spell. "It was a mesmerising performance. I have heard cello carnatic music for the first time. But it was a lifetime experience. I only realised that the concert was over when everyone clapped," says Rita Kalia, a housewife. Nisha Joshi, a student, was surprised to see Saskia. "I have always been an ardent music lover, but it's for the first time that I have seen a Dutch lady playing Indian classical music. She has perfect command on her music." For some, it was a spiritual experience. "The entire time Saskia played I had closed my eyes. It felt like I was united with God," says Kanika Mahajan, a teacher.
