Politicians top the list Aman Sood Tribune News Service
Patiala, January 24 Topping the list is independent Ghanaur MLA Madan Lal Jalalpur, who got himself a fully furnished official accommodation on the prime location in Patiala. More than twice he has held political functions affiliated with the Congress in this house. However, he could not be contacted for his comments. The public works department (PWD) has also gone out of its way to impress Jalalpur by bearing the cost of making his house look presentable after spending lakhs of rupees. When contacted, the PWD officials in Patiala refused to comment, but PWD minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa accepted that “allotted works, as per importance, were completed”. Similarly, SAD general secretary Prem Singh Chandumajra is unofficially staying in 29-D, Rajbaha Road, a posh house otherwise allotted to MS Lalwa, chairman of zila parishad. Lalwa is considered a close aide of Chandumajra and the house is being used for all sorts of political gatherings from the past three years. When contacted, Chandumajra confirmed that he was staying in that house, but said he paid the rent from his own pocket. When asked if he was entitled to stay there, he replied that the house was allotted in the name of Lalwa. Another politician, a close aide of the Punjab Chief Minister, former Samana MLA Surjit Singh Rakhra, is using 4-D residential accommodation as his office from the past over three years. The address also finds a mention in an in-house magazine, taken out by his political followers. The house is allotted in the name of Sukhraj Singh Sidhu and is presently being used by Rakhra to meet people from his constituency. All three politicians have used these accommodations for political purposes. Senior officials in the estate office claimed that their office had sent reminders to many occupants to vacate houses, but said penal rent could not be charged from all as they were all “well-connected” people. “It is their government and we cannot act against them,” they added. Rakhra accepted that though he was using that house, he would ask his staff to vacate at the earliest. “I would find a private place for myself,” he added. Many others closely linked with politicians have got houses allotted either in their own name or someone else’s in Patiala. Divisional Commissioner GS Grewal said no one would be allowed to misuse government property for personal gains. Meanwhile IG, Lokpal, Sham Lal Gakhar and former Patiala SP RK Sharma today clarified that they had overstayed only for a month. “My application for retaining the house for some more time is pending,” Gakhar told the TNS. |
