Stress laid on saving energy

Dera Bassi, January 15
Rashtriya Urja Jan Jagriti Abhiyan, a countrywide Urja yatra, for the purpose of awakening people to save energy, was given a welcome here.

This yatra is being organised by Vigyan Bharti, in collaboration with the Ministry of New and Renewal Energy, Government of India.

The yatra that was started on January 12 from four different places, including Jammu, Kanyakumari, Calcutta and Rajkot would conclude at Nagpur on January 27.

Director of the Hotel and Catering Management Institute DJ Singh introduced the members of this yatra.

Students of the institute talked about measures such as recycling of solid and water wastes from hotels and efforts to utilise new and unconventional energy resources that may be renewed.

National secretary of Vigyan Bharti Dr S B Bhardwaj said this yatra would organise functions at more than 250 places in the country.

He stressed upon the national feeling for energy saving so that people across the country could avail the energy resources. Along with conventional resources of energy, other options should also be used, he added.

25 boxes of liquor seized

Lalru, January 15
The Lalru police has seized 25 boxes of illicit liquor and arrested one person during a police naka near Lalru today. A Maruti car used by the accused, coming from Chandigarh side, has also been impounded.

The car driver was identified as Rajiv Joshi, a resident of Babial, Ambala Cantonment.

A case has been registered against him under Section 61 of the Excise Act and Section 181 of the Motor Vehicle Act.

Joshi had bought country made liquor from Chandigarh on cheaper rates to sell it on higher rates in Haryana.

Army Day celebrated

Ambala, January 15
The Kharga Corps today celebrated Army Day at Ambala Cantonment. On this day in 1948 Lt Gen KM Cariappa took over the baton from Gen Roy Butcher of the British Army and became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army.

GOC of Kharga Corps Lt Gen Anil Chait was the chief guest at today’s occasion.

He saluted the valiant martyrs who laid down their lives while defending their motherland. JCOs and other ranks, too, paid homage to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives to protect the country.

In the evening at home was organised at the Kharga house. During this programme civil officers were also present.

One booked for fraud

Mohali, January 15
Saroop Singh, a tenant in a flat at Jayvayu Vihar, Sector 67, in a complaint to the police stated that Baldev Singh, a resident of Jind, Haryana, got Rs 3 lakh loan from HDFC Bank and also got a Skoda car financed from the bank on the basis of forged
documents.

The accused, while posing as Saroop Singh, got an electricity connection issued at the residence of Saroop Singh. A case under Sections 419, 420, 465, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC was registered at the Phase XI police station.

In another case, Avtar Singh, a resident of Rajpura, complained to the police that Meena, owner of Guru Kirpa Enterprises, Mohali, took Rs 19 lakh from him to send his son to Canada. Neither the money was returned nor was the boy sent to Canada.

Car with red beacon impounded

Zirakpur, January 15
The police today impounded an Ambassador car for illegally using red beacon. The vehicle is owned by Avtar Singh Nagla, a resident of Nagla village, Zirakpur.

He claimed to be the director, KVSK (Pb), Government of India. A police team was on VIP duty on the Zirakpur-Kalka road where the cops had stopped the vehicle (DL-3C-AY 5141) and asked for documents.

A police official stated that the owner of the car could neither produce the document for the red beacon nor the vehicle’s registration documents. The vehicle was impounded and challaned under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Earlier incident

Sources said the owner of the vehicle, Avtar Singh, lost Vidhan Sabha elections from Banur constituency.

Earlier, the Dera Bassi police impounded two vehicles from Avtar Singh for illegally using red beacons on December 4, 2008. The vehicles bearing registration number PB-65E-0484 (Scorpio) and CH-04E-0299 (Corolla) were stopped by a police party at a naka near the bus stand, which asked the owner of the cars for documents. Avtar Singh failed to produce the permission for the red beacons and nor could he produce the vehicles’ registration documents.

Assistant manager duped of Rs 40,000

Chandigarh, January 15
Jai Singh, an assistant manager of the Haryana State Co-operative Bank, Sector 28, lodged a complaint with the Sector 26 Police Station, that some unknown person duped him of Rs 40,000 yesterday. A case under Sections 419 and 420 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 26 Police Station here.

Stolen

Gorakh Singh Kaila, a resident of Sector 20, Panchkula, reported to the police that his Maruti (CH-03-1680) was stolen from the PGI parking on January 1. In another case, Puneet Gupta, a resident of Sector 22, alleged that his laptop, cash worth Rs 1,280 and a cheque book of Vijaya Bank was stolen from his house during the intervening night of January 13 and 14. The police has registered different cases under appropriate sections at the respective police stations. — TNS

Enzo, Basak lift singles titles

France player Enzo Couacaud and Basak Eraydin from Turkey won singles crown in the boys and girls’ categories, respectively, in the Mehru-ITF World Ranking Junior Circuit Grade-3 Tennis Tournament, which concluded at the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association courts, Sector 10, here today.

In the boys’ final, Enzo Couacaud did not face tough challenge from his rival Temur Ismailov from Uzbekistan. Enzo defeated Temur in straight sets 7-5, 6-0.

Though in the first set, Temur put up some resistance, but after losing it, he virtually gave up.

The girls’ sinles final was a keenly contested affair, as both finalists, Basak Eraydin and Donna Vekic of Croatia, put up a good show to grab the top honours.

After wrapping up the first set at 6-3, Basak Eraydin was given a run for her money by Donna Vekic, who came up strongly to win the second set 5-7. Basak Eraydin then swept Donna Vekic off her feet in the third set to clinch the match 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.

Chief guest Pradip Mehra, Adviser to the Administrator, UT Administration, Chandigarh, distributed prizes to the winners.

The results:

Boys’ singles (Final): Enzo Couacaud (FRA) bt Temur Ismailov (UZB) 7-5, 6-0.

Girls’ singles: Basak Eraydin (TUR) bt Donna Vekic (CRO) 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.

Arshav, Chirag storm into semis

The Manav Mangal Total Tennis Tournament today saw its semifinalists, Arshav Kumar, Manveer Singh, Chirag Singh and Daksh Marwah in the under-10 category.

The tourney is being played at the Total Tennis Academy, Phase X, here.

Top seed (U-10) Arshav Kumar faced tough fight in the quarterfinals from his opponent Yuvraj Singh, who took early lead 4-2 but he came back strongly to level the score 4-4. Yuvraj had a chance to win by reaching at a match point, but he squandered it and lost 6-8 in the tiebreak.

Nankana Sahib College of Education, Kot Gangu Rai, Ludhiana, got second position.
