Truck impounded with 46 cattle

Ambala, January 11
The Mullana police on a tip off near Dosarka intercepted a truck carrying 28 buffaloes and 18 calves last evening.

The cattle were being illegally transported to Saharanpur for slaughtering. The truck driver did not have any certificate from the department of animal husbandry. It is mandatory for owners of the animals to acquire the certificate for transporting dairy animals even within the city.

In a clear violation of the Prevention of Cruelty towards Animals Act, a large number of dairy farmers operating in Punjab and Haryana are illegally transporting buffaloes for slaughtering in UP. They do not procure any certificate from the department of animal husbandry, which is mandatory for transporting the dairy animals.

However, last evening on a tip off, the truck was followed, intercepted by the Mullana police near Dosarka and booked three persons, including Kadir, a resident of Sijad village in Saharanpur district, Tofik of Pipaltala village and Amit, a resident of Mohall Ikrampur of Saharanpur, along with truck No. HR-47AL-0612 and registered a case at the Mullana police station under Section 11 of the PAC Act.

Hoax Bomb Case
Accused arrested

A day after a hoax bomb call triggered panic at the Fun Republic multiplex in Mani Majra, the police has identified and arrested the 30-year old mechanic, Anil Kumar, alias Montu. He told the police that he was playing a prank in an inebriated state. Besides, the police also arrested two other persons, Jang Singh and Sunil, who are agents of a mobile company, as they failed to check the identity of the person before issuing him the mobile number. Anil was found using the mobile number of Surjit.

Anil’s call to the police control room informing that a bomb has been planted in the multiplex has created panic amongst hundreds of persons who were inside the multiplex yesterday evening. The visitors were immediately asked to vacate the complex. There were three movies being played inside the multiplex at that time when the police reached along with a bomb disposal squad.

The police said after making the false call, the accused had switched off his cell phone and he was traced through his mobile number. The police said the accused had obtained the SIM number on the identity of other person, Surjit, and thus they have arrested the agents also as they provided him the number without verifying the identity.

Anil Kumar is a motor mechanic and runs a repair shop at Sarojni Nagar in Mani Majra. A case under Section 506 (criminal intimidation) and 507 (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication) of the IPC was registered at the Mani Majra police station.

Woman booked for fraud

The police has booked a woman on the charges of fraud. The case was registered on the complaint of Kulwant Singh, a resident of Sector 34.

He alleged that Satwant Kaur, registered her flat number 4, Co-operative Housing First Society, Sector-50, on her name by preparing fake documents.

A case under sections 420, 419, 468, 471, 120-B of the IPC has been registered.

The police said the case was registered.

Chandigarh, Delhi teams enter heated arguments

In the ongoing National School Games held at the Sector 42 stadium, a high drama was witnessed when Chandigarh and Delhi teams entered into a heated argument during the semifinal match of the badminton tournament in the individual under-19 boys’ category.

The argument started when the Chandigarh team protested after losing the match to Delhi. Chandigarh protested against the decision of the chief refree. However, organising committee members said a re-match would be held, which was objected by the Delhi team. In anger, Harsh Vardhan, a player of Delhi team, got injured after his hand hit a windowpane and he had to be hospitalised. In the end, the Chandigarh team represented by Roopinder was given a walkover.

Amit, Rajni win 100m race

Chandigarh, January 11
The annual central revenue north zone sports meet under the aegis of Central Revenue Sports Board, (CRSB), New Delhi, took off today. Participants from all over North India had assembled at the Sector 7 Sports Complex here to participate in the meet.

According to a press note issued here today, Chief Commissioner Income Tax (northwest region) BS Dhillon declared the meet open. The opening ceremony also saw cultural performances.

The inaugural event i.e. 100m sprint was won by Amit Khanna (Delhi-Jaipur sub-zone) in the men’s category and Rajni Kashyap (Indore-Bhopal sub-zone) in the women’s category.

The host cricket team also won their match against the Delhi-Jaipur sub-zone, thus setting a final clash against the Bhopal-Indore team, which got a walk over in their qualifying match.

While the track and field events are being held in the Sports Complex, Sector 7, other events are being held at the Hockey Stadium, Sector 42; Football Stadium, Sector 17; Cricket Stadium, Sector 16; Table Tennis Complex, Sector 23; Badminton Hall, Panjab University, Chandigarh; and Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex, Panchkula.

There are about 16 disciplines, which include track and field events, table tennis, lawn tennis, volleyball, swimming, hockey, cricket, kabaddi, bodybuilding, etc., in which around 300 participants are participating.

Fang Chi gets better of Spuriti

The second day of the ITF Junior Circuit Grade-3 Tennis Tournament witnessed boys’ singles matches to be one-sided affairs except a match between Vinod Gowde of India and Joshua Ward Hibbret of Great Britain.

After going down tamely in the first set 6-2, Vinod Gowde put up sterling performance in the second set, which went six times tie break and eventfully Joshua Ward Hibbert clinched the second set 7-6 (6).

However, the girls’ singles matches were fairly contested with Fang Chi Tsao of Taipei, who had made it the main draw through the qualifier, got the better of Spuriti Shivalingiah of India in three sets. Having lost the first set 4-6, Fang Chi Tsao recovered to win the second set at 7-5 and managed to hold back Spuriti Shivalingiah’s challenge in the third set and clinch it at 6-4. The all-India affair of Tarranum Handa and Prarthana Thombare saw a keen struggle between the two with Thombare winning the first set 6-3 and Tarranum winning the second set at 3-6. Thombare, however, swept Tarranum Handa in the third set by claiming the same at 6-0.

Elizavera Kulichkova of Russia fought back a spirited challenge from Aarzoo Malik of India. Aarzoo Malik, who won the first set easily, however, faltered in the next set losing to Elizavera Kulichkova 1-6, 6-2, 6-0.

In the first round, the boys’ doubles main draw, the pair of Arjun Kadhe and Rakshay Thakkar of India got the better of Vishvesh Sinha (IND) and Shao Chi Yang (TPE) 3-6, 6-2 and 10-8 in a match tie break. Indian boys had a good session in the boys’ doubles section with Rohit Bisht and Saurabh Singh disposing of Temur Ismailov and Abduvoris Saitmukhamedov of Uzbakistan 7-6 (8), 4-6 (10-7) and the pair of Yash Deshpande and Rishabhdev Raman disposing of the pair of Ilya Lunev of Russia and Fatehdeep Singh of India 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.

In the girls’ doubles, Aldila Sutjiad and Silva Nadya Syarifah of Indonesia combined beautifully got past Indian challenge of Prarthana Tombare and Kanika Vaidya. The Indian pair stretched the Indonesian pair full length losing the first set at 7-6 after three tie breaks but wilted under constant Indonesian pressure losing the second set at 6-1.

The quarterfinal round matches will start at 10.30 am tomorrow at the CLTA Complex.
