Mohali, January 8
The Punjab forest department today seized logs of khair tree, weighing around 15 quintal, from two farmhouses in the forest area along the Tanda-Masol road, around 5 km from the PGI, Chandigarh.

More recovery of illegally-felled khair tree was expected tomorrow.

Apprehending it to be the handiwork of khair wood smugglers, the forest department has embarked on an exercise to scan the entire forest area that was privately managed.

“Without permission, not a single tree could be cut as the area came under the Punjab Land Preservation Act, 1900 and provisions of the other forest Acts,” said Ropar divisional forest officer Vishal Chauhan.

The felled trees had been cut into pieces and hidden at two farmhouses, including Kang Farmhouse, and were to be smuggled out from there.

Acting on a tip-off, range officer Balwinder Singh along with the DFO raided the farmhouses and found the logs of khair tree. The logs were valued at around Rs 1 lakh.

Sources said each khair tree fetched around Rs 20,000 in the open market and was used in “katha” factory and in pharmaceutical industry.

Till late in the evening, forest officials were carried out search of the forest area.

The recovered logs have been kept at the Seonk Forest Rest House.

At Kang Farmhouse, the forest officials found that a hillock had been levelled.
