Teachers injured in head-on collision
Fatehgarh Sahib, January 6 Four teachers of Kendriya Vidyalaya, one government schoolteacher and a peon were travelling in the vehicle. They were on their way to KV School in Fatehgarh Sahib. The schoolteachers alleged that the vehicle they were travelling in was rashly driven and despite repeated requests the driver refused to slow down the vehicle. It collided with a truck near Raipur village. The teachers were rushed to Fatehgarh Sahib Civil Hospital from where one of them, Tarlochan Kaur, was referred to Sector-32 government hospital in Chandigarh. The condition of primary school teacher Tarlochan Kaur was said to be serious in the morning however her condition is now stated to be out of danger. She received multiple injuries over her head, face and knee.One of the senior teachers of primary school, Anjana Chatterji said that she missed the vehicle this morning and reached school in her own car. She said that the 58 year-old-teacher who received serious injuries was residing in Mohali alone as her other family members reside in Assam. Her retirement is due next year. Other teachers who received injuries were discharged after first aid was given. Police officials who reached the spot said that action would be initiated in this regard after recording statements of the injured and accused driver. |

Bharat Nagar road a killer stretch
Kalka, January 6 Residents of Bharat Nagar Sangat Singh, Pawan Kumar and Balwinder Neelu, former Municipal Councillor of Bharat Nagar alleged that due to the negligent attitude of authorities concerned the main road of Bharat Nagar is in a deplorable condition. Due to big potholes, the stretch is endangering some serious accidents. They said due to the developing Baddi Industrial town thousands of vehicles pass through this road daily. They further alleged that Municipal Committee had not taken any initiative to re-carpet the road, which is lying in neglected state since five years. Considering the inconvenience faced by daily commuters, residents have urged the local and district administration to take a serious note of the problem. The residents also urged the department of PWD (B&R) to construct a speed breaker on the road to make a check on the recklessly driven vehicles, keeping in view the safety of the residents of Bharat Nagar and its adjoining areas. |

Draining of Storm Water
Ambala, January 6 A few days back, a team of senior officers led by deputy commissioner had inspected the city area adjoining the NH for reviewing the drainage system. The team noticed that a RCC pipe of around 900 mm was put into service road near Manji Sahib Gurdwara for draining out the storm water of NH in to the city area. No drain exists where the pipe has been placed and the water will enter in the nearby residential areas. The complainant said in the complaint that besides it, at Banuri Naka, the drains for the disposal of storm water of NH had been discharged into drain falling into Ambala drain. The clearance of Ambala drain was not being allowed by NHAI but its own storm water was being drained into it. The complainant asked the police to take action against the project director in this regard. |

Kalka, January 6 Some of the problems were sorted out on the spot, said Pawan Chhikkar, SDO, UHBVN, Pinjore. He said that some of the subscribers also expressed their gratitude to the dept of UHBVN for installing the transformers, sanctioned in the last open darbar. The S.E also directed the officials concerned to get an FIR lodged against the houseowners, who had constructed their houses under high -tension live wires.

5,000 participate in joint placement drive
Kharar, January 6 Around 5,000 students from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi participated in the placement drive. Rayat-Bahra Group chairman Gurvinder Singh Bahra said students from across 66 colleges and 15 universities participated in the drive. Group assistant managing director, Dr Sandeep Kaura said the drive was conducted over a period of five days. A team of experts from the company comprising Rajat Kumar, senior vice-president recruitments, along with senior technical lead for HR D'Souza conducted the written test, followed by group discussion, HR interviews and technical interviews. A total of 700 students were shortlisted and for the final technical interview, around 192 students have been selected. Kaura added that BTech students have been selected for the post of JE and MBA students have been selected for the branch development manager with the package ranging from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 6 lakh. |

350 players take part in rural tourney
Fatehgarh Sahib, January 6 Speaking on the occasion, Mahajan said the sportsman spirit made youngsters a better citizen, as they had the spirit to win and if defeated they take it as a lesson to improve their mistakes. He said the state government had introduced various schemes to encourage youth towards sports. The rural areas would be given grants to develop infrastructure for sports and the village panchayat would get Rs 1 lakh and Rs 5 lakh would be given at the block level. A total of 1,233 villages of Punjab and 14 blocks would be covered under various schemes for sportspersons. The Deputy Commissioner stated that a sports stadium in 10 acres would be built in Fatehgarh Sahib and its construction would begin within a month. The Chief Minister has already issued a grant of Rs 10 lakh in this regard. |
Cooch Behar U-19 Meet
Chandigarh, January 6 Resuming from their overnight 146 for three in 58 overs, Punjab went on to score 415 all out in 133 overs today. Overnight batsmen, Ankit Pursharthy and Anil Sihag, stitched a partnership of 175 runs for the fourth wicket. Pursharthy hit 105 in 293 balls with the help of 15 boundaries before he was caught and bowled by AS Rajput with the team’s total reading 249 for four in 97.4 overs. Rajput again struck to send back Sihag to the pavilion when he was at 101 off 233. Mohit Handa (70) and Sandeep Sharma (65 not out) got their act together by putting on 103-run partnership for the eighth wicket. For UP, medium pacer AS Rajput was the pick of the bowlers, as he returned a rich haul of six for 98. National School Games from today
Chandigarh, January 6 Addressing mediapersons at the UT Guest House today, DPI (schools) PK Sharma said at least 26 teams with around 1,800 participants were taking part in the competition. All arrangements had been made keeping in view the cold wave conditions in the region. The players would be provided with mattress and quilts. He said different committees had been formed to look after the queries of the participants. The department has issued the rules and regulations to the participants. The police department will make the necessary security arrangements at the venues of games and accommodation of the participants. 10 teams from Punjab for golf meet
Chandigarh, January 6 Ten clubs from Punjab are expected to send a team of four golfers each for the tournament, which is being organised by the Punjab Golf Association in memory of its general secretary, who was a gunner and an outstanding golfer. The best three cards based on gross scoring will be considered for the team championship. The top two teams will be awarded prizes. There will also be winner and runner-up prizes in the individual contests in both gross and nett scores. According to Col HS Baidwan, general secretary of the Punjab Golf Association, the tournament will start with a gunshot tee off from all tees at 8.30 am. The last date for entry of team names is January 9 by 4 pm. |
