Residents complain of choked sewerage
MC constitutes special team to check the menace
Aman Sood
Tribune News Service

Patiala, December 19
Residents of many parts of the royal city are up in arms following the failure of the municipal corporation to shift dairies out of the city, which has resulted in choking of sewerage in many parts of the district.

MC officials claim to have constituted a special team under a senior officer to solve this problem caused by the residents who throw waste inside the drains.

Numerous locality residents have claimed that choked sewerage is a continuous problem which has no permanent solution. “Every week we have to complain to the MC authorities and they send their staff and the problem is solved temporarily,” alleged residents of Sewak Colony.

Residents in Model Town, Gobind Nagar, Badoongar, Charan Bagh, Sewak Colony, Sant Nagar and Gian Colony alleged that dirty water accumulate in their colonies. Blockage in the lines was pushing waste back into the toilets.

“I had asked a private plumber to try to clear the choked sewerage, but the problem is bigger than what can be solved by a private worker and hence we have no option but to wait for the MC team to arrive,” claimed Joginder Singh, a resident of Kishore Colony.

Numerous dairies located in the heart of the city have been found guilty on many counts for releasing their waste straight into the sewerage. “They throw everything in the open drains which ultimately gets into the sewer line, resulting in choking of underground sewerage,” claimed MC officials.

“Blockage in old, worn out underground drainage lines led to sewerage bursting through manholes and stagnation on various streets in the aforesaid localities. At certain places we have found plastic bags and even clothes thrown inside drains, which leads to choking,” claimed MC staffers.

Patiala MC Commissioner MS Narang confirmed that there were problems earlier and majority of them were due to the apathetic attitude of the sewerage board, which had locked many inside passages. “However, we have a new team, headed by an SDO-ranked officer, which is now available for the entire city to clear out this mess,” he added.

SDO (operation and maintenance) Suresh Kumar told The Tribune that though the problem was solved at many places, certain areas were still facing problems as residents were throwing solid waste inside the sewage. “We would further start an awareness programme to educate them to avoid this menace,” he added.
