Insecure jails

A businessman went to see the warden of the Central Jail at Amritsar. "Sir, I want to set up a mobile phone shop inside the jail," he said. The warden looked at him with surprise, "Are you kidding? Cell phones are not allowed inside." The businessman replied, " But, sir, I have been reading about the use of cell phones, narcotics and even guns inside the jail premises." The warden said, "These things are not allowed officially." The businessman said, "Sir, please allow me to sell them unofficially."

This conversation may be a figment of my imagination but the reality is not far from it. Recently, a jail inmate was killed by other inmates. Sometime ago, Niyam Ali, a Pakistani lodged in a jail, had escaped. If such is the level of security in our jails, then may be a full-fledged shopping centre selling contrabands could be opened inside the jails. It seems anything and everything could be smuggled in and out, and anybody could be made to escape.

The minister of jails once made a surprise check at night at the Central jail, Amritsar. The minister peeped inside an empty cell and inquired where was the dreaded criminal. The warden replied, "Sir, he’s probably gone to buy a paan after dinner in the nearby market."
