Residents get tubewell, streetlights
Dera Bassi, December 8 The Lalru Nagar Panchyat has been setting up these lights at a cost of Rs 30 lakh. After inaugurating this project, the MLA stated that the SAD-BJP government was committed to provide good living, educational and health facilities to the people of the state. He also inaugurated the tubewell in Dera Bassi. He said that to provide suitable drinking water to the people, seven new tubewells were being set up in the town by GMADA and the sewerage board. As many as three new tubewells would be set up in Lalru by GMADA, he added. Speaking on the conditions prevailing at government schools, he said over Rs one crore would be spent on the construction of new school buildings and repair of old school buildings in this constituency. |

Inconvenience due to bus timings
Kalka, December 8 The students and their parents alleged that despite of the fact that school timings have been changed due to winters from 9 am to 3 pm, Haryana Roadways bus, ferrying students, is running as per the previous summer timings i.e. from 8 am to 2 pm. Subsequently, the students have to wait for three hours, as the next bus service for the above said villages is at 5 pm. A delegation of students and parents headed by VK Bansal, president, Shiwalik Vikas Manch, today met the GM, Haryana Roadways, and submitted a memorandum seeking immediate change in the timings of the bus service accordingly. |

Police opposes Sofat’s bail plea
Panchkula, December 8 The police informed the district court that Ambala jail doctor could treat Sofat of his ailment and there was no need for any other treatment. Sofat has sought the bail for the second time. He had stated that he had the problem of stone and needed proper medical treatment. Earlier on October 25, Additional District and Sessions Judge Ritu Garg had dismissed Sofat’s bail application. The police, on a tip-off, had arrested Sofat, a resident of Heera Nagar (Ludhiana), near Hotel Sunbeam in Sector 22, Chandigarh, on September 17. Dr Sofat was booked by the police following investigations into his complaint regarding robbery and shootout in Morni Hills on July 19, 2009. During investigations it was revealed that the doctor had only planned the incident to implicate one Ramesh Pashan and his two sons in a criminal case. Sofat, in his complaint to the police, had alleged that Pashan and his two sons, Vinayak and Abhinav, with the help of their driver Ranjit and two other unidentified persons had attacked and injured his driver Nelson, who was shot twice in the chest. Pashan family had robbed him of Rs 33 lakh which was lying in his vehicle, he had further alleged. |

Gang of criminals busted
Zirakpur, December 8 The police said sharp-edged weapons were recovered from their possession. The accused have been identified as Ranjit Singh and Sunil Kumar, both residents of Jhandpur, Kharar; Yogesh Sharma, a resident of Gobind Vihar, Baltana; Devi Lal, a resident of Burail, Chandigarh; and Raju Gabaria, a resident of Ram Darbar, Chandigarh. The police stated that Ranjit Singh, Sunil Kumar and Raju were involved in various theft cases in Sectors 31, 26 and 34, Chandigarh. The accused were produced in the Dera Bassi court today, where they were sent to a two-day police remand. Zirkapur SHO Yogi Raj said ASI Anup Singh was patrolling near Baltana when he received a tip-off that the suspects were planning a robbery at the rear side of Choice Hotel. Acting swiftly, a police team raided the place and arrested them. The police also seized three knives, iron rods and a “subli” from their possession. During preliminary investigation, it was found that Ranjit, one of the accused had a criminal background, and more than 20 cases had been registered against him in Chandigarh. They also confessed to have committed five thefts in Zirakpur. The police said Yogesh, along with Raju, used to do a quick recce of an area before committing a theft. Thieves struck at a house at MS Enclave in Dhakoli last night. Owner of the house was not present at the time of the incident. In his complaint to the police, Ashok, son of the owner, said some neighbours informed him about the theft. The police said a probe was on into the matter.

Mohali: A sum of Rs 3 lakh was allegedly taken away at gunpoint by four persons from the office of a person running an immigration company. According to reports, Gurmukh Walia runs an office in Phase VII and helps people to go abroad on study visa. Four persons, including a suspended police inspector, came to his office late in the afternoon to settle financial matters. They were allegedly carrying a pistol. It is reported that they took away Rs 3 lakh from the office and fled from there. One person was however caught and taken to the police station. The police did not take any action in this regard as both the parties were making efforts to go in for a compromise.
210 boxes of liquor seized
As many as 210 boxes of liquor were seized by the officials of the Excise and Taxation Department, which were illegally being carried from Chandigarh. According to reports, a vehicle carrying the liquor was stopped near the Punjab School Education Board by officials concerned after getting a secret information. The liquor was being carried from Chandigarh to Kanjla village in Punjab. |

DAV eves lift football trophy
Chandigarh, December 8 The match started on a cautious note, as DAV girls were strong and mounted pressure from the beginning. However, they could not do any damage due to strong defence managed by Pallavi of Sacred Heart. However, Sacred Heart girls could not stand the pressure and conceded first goal in the ninth minute when speedy ring winger Neha Pandey of DAV club dribble passed the defenders and beat the rival goalkeeper with powerful shot. Stung by this goal, Sacred Heart girls collected their nerves and started making counter attacks. Right-winger Ivy Raina got a golden chance in the 15th minute, however, she shot wide off rival goal keeper Anjana Thakur at her mercy. In counter attack, speedy right striker Pooja of DAV Club scored second goal in the 17 minute with solo efforts. However, Sacred Heart girls did not lose heart and played combined game and managed to reduce the margin in the 20th minute when their junior international player Tanvi Bhargava scored the first goal for her team with an angular shot which beat the rival goal keeper Anjana completely. DAV girls tried hard to increase the margin, but failed to increase the margin. Half time score was 2-1 in favour of DAV club. APJ get better of DAV-8
Chandigarh, December 8 After winning the toss, APJ elected to bat first and were all out for 149 in 39.4 overs. Gaurav Sharma 34 (1x4), Abhijit Garg 26 (3x4), Kapil Punia 18 (2x4) and Karan 18 (2x4), were the main scorers. For DAV-8, Suraj Singh four for 44 and Rakesh Rawat three for 46 were the main wicket takers. Sparsh also impressed with his bowling figures of two for seven. Hisham Fani and Mehfooz Khan added 63 runs for the fourth wicket before Mehfooz Khan was caught by Arpit Pannu off medium pacer Siddharth Sharma for 31 for 70 balls with the teams total reading 122 for 4. Thereafter, wickets fell at regular intervals. Hasim Fani was the highest scorer with 47 off 133 balls inclusive of 8 boundaries. Right-arm medium pacer Siddharth Sharma was bowling with a lot of fire and did not allow any respite to the J&K batsmen. Rupinder routs Vijeta in badminton
Chandigarh, December 8 During three well-contested games, Rupinder beat Vijeta 21-17, 16-21 and 21-17. Later, he defeated Shreyansh Jaiswal, national runner-up in the sub-junior category, in straight games (21-6, 21-10). In pre-quarterfinals today, he defeated seeded Deepak Khatri of Haryana 21-14, 21-16. He will now meet Vikas of Andhra Pradesh in the quarterfinal match to be held tomorrow. A student of Shivalik Public School and regular trainee of Panjab University Coaching Centre, Rupinder, has won four titles during the state championship this year. |
Top women golfers tee off today
Chandigarh, December 8 Saaniya pipped Bangalore’s Sharmila Nicollet by two strokes to clinch the Hero Honda Women’s Professional Golf Tour fifth leg title on the par-72 greens of the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon. She finished with a three-day tally of 221 to defeat Sharmila (223) by two strokes with both girls firing identical three over 75 cards on the final day. Nalini Singh Siwach finished a distant third at 232 with Chandigarh’s Preetinder Kaur occupying the sixth slot at 239. This was Saaniya’s first major title this season. She pocketed the prize money of Rs 64,000. Currently occupying the third slot in the Women’s Golf Association of India (WGAI) order of merit, Saaniya will face tough competition from Tanya Wadhwa. This 18-year-old from Texas became the youngest girl to win a professional championship in Texas in 2008, when she was just 15. The 2003 junior world champion and the US Kids world champion are now poised to make a mark in the Women’s Professional Golf Tour. Sharmila has won three of five legs of the current tour with Saaniya and Nalini Singh Siwach winning one leg each. Another edition to this leg will be Vandana Aggarwal. Jessie Grewal, director of the Golf Academy of India, sees a lot of talent in Saaniya. He feels the big hitter is capable of making it big in the days to come. At the moment, Sharmila heads the order of merit with earnings of Rs 2,68,000 from five outings. Nalini Sinch Siwach occupies the second slot at Rs 1,92,000 with Saaniya a close third at Rs 1,75,000.
