Gas agency owner booked

Ropar, December 5
Owner of Chamkaur Sahib gas agency Anaib Singh was booked Under Section 7 of the Essential Commodities Act here today.

A case was registered against him at the Ropar police station after the district food supplies controller wrote to the district police recommending registration of a case against the gas agency for having 1,783 bogus connections.

Assistant food supply officer Rakesh Gupta with his team of food inspectors Grade I Sewa Singh and Kulwinder Kaur and Grade II inspectors Manish Gupta and Ravinder Singh had detected these bogus connections.

Bogus connections were shown issued in over 53 villages of Chamkaur Sahib.

Maximum bogus connections were found from village Rasidpur. Around 52 bogus connections were detected in the village alone.

Similar bogus entries were detected in villages of Kotli, Balrampur, Dholaran, Bassi Gujaran and other nearby villages. Out of 1,783 bogus connections, 626 are from Chamkaur Sahib.

Woollens distributed

Members of a local social organisation led by OP Tangri gave woollens, shoes and uniforms to around 51 needy students of Government Primary School, Fatehpur Arian, on Sunday.

Gurpal Singh Nagra, a social worker, was the chief guest, while Rajwant Kaur, president, Mahila Congress, presided over the function. The members also distributed woollens among students of Government Primary School, Talania. — OC

Sofat applies for bail on health grounds

Sumit Sofat, a Ludhiana-based doctor, who is presently lodged in Ambala jail in connection with an attempt to murder case, has once again moved the court for seeking bail on health grounds.

Earlier, his regular bail application was dismissed by Additional District and Sessions Judge Ritu Garg on October 25.

The court, while acting on his bail application, has issued notice to the police to file their reply by the next week. Sofat, in his earlier application, had stated that as per law if someone had given false information to the police then only the police could lodge case under Section 182 of the IPC for providing false information.

He had further stated that after finding the complaint false, the police could not slap the same sections against the applicant.

However, the public prosecutor on the other hand had stated that the police had arrested the accused doctor after putting very serious efforts for about one year. He had further added that the accused was very clever in nature and was involved in many criminal incidents in the past also and sought the dismissal of the application.

After getting a tip off the police had arrested Sofat, a resident of Heera Nagar (Ludhiana), near Hotel Sunbeam in Sector 22, Chandigarh, on September 17.

Sofat was booked by the police following investigations into his complaint regarding robbery and shooting incident at Morni hills on July 19 last year. Sofat had alleged that Pashan and his two sons, Vinayak and Abhinav, with the help of their driver Ranjit and two other unidentified persons, had attacked and injured his driver Nelson, who was shot twice in the chest.

He had had also alleged that Pashan family had robbed Rs 33 lakh from his vehicle. However, the investigations had revealed that the incident was planned by the doctor himself to implicate one Ramesh Pashan and his two sons in a criminal case.

Man threatens to commit suicide in police station

Chandigarh, December 5
High drama prevailed at the Mani Majra police station today when a man involved in a street brawl threatened to commit suicide.

Sonu, a resident of Mani Majra, was arrested following a minor clash. The police said Sonu started threatening the constable on duty that he would commit suicide. After that he banged his head on the washbasin and sustained injuries. He was rushed to the Public Health Centre at Mani Majra. A case under Section 309 of the IPC has been registered.

Arrested

Four persons were arrested on the charges of consuming liquor at public place. While three of them, Sukhbir Singh, Amandeep Singh and Virender Singh, all residents of Ludhiana, were nabbed from the rear side of Sagar Ratna restaurant parking, Sector 17, Devinder Sharma of Sector 36 was arrested from Sector 19. A case under Sections 68/1/14 Excise Act was registered. Later, all accused were released on bail.

Snatching

In yet another snatching incident, a motorcycle-borne youth snatched a gold chain from Baljit Kaur, a resident of Sector 19, yesterday. In his complaint, Manoj Kumar, a resident of Sector 27, alleged that four boys, who came in a Wagon R car, snatched his laptop and mobile phone near Tribune Chowk on the intervening night of December 3 and 4.

Two separate cases have been registered.

Stolen

Three city residents lost their vehicles yesterday. Joy George of Sector 44 reported that someone had stolen his scooter (CH-01-Q-3738) from outside his residence, while an Alto car car (CH-38-T-3861) belonging to Parash Sharma from Maloya Colony was stolen from Sector 45 the next day. In a similar incident, Rajinder Kumar Punj of Sector 41 complained that his Bajaj Chetak scooter (CH-01-U-1450) was stolen from outside his residence.

Held

The police arrested a truck driver and seized 461 boxes of country liquor from him last night. The accused has been identified as Parsu Ram, a resident of Balwarh village, Mandi (HP). According to police sources, Parsu was loading the liquor boxes in Swaraj Mazda truck (HP-63-1214) from a liquor vend at Mani Majra motor market around 1.45 am when the police conducted a raid following a tip off. The consignment was destined for Himachal Pradesh. Parsu is said to be the cleaner of the truck.

Robbery

Around four miscreants robbed a pedestrian, namely Jai Singh, a resident of Ram Darbar. The miscreants took away two gold rings, one gold chain, his purse containing Rs 3,000, one ATM card and a mobile phone.

In his complaint, Jai Singh said he alighted from a bus near poultry farm chowk, Hallo Majra, last night when around four persons robbed him near the chowk.

Six booked for murder bid

Mohali, December 5
The police has booked six persons, including a woman, in an attempt to murder case. Of the six accused, three have been identified as Karnail Singh and his wife, residents of Phase IV, and Tarlochan Singh of Phase I.

In his complaint, Harjinder Singh Bhatia, a resident of Phase IV, stated that the incident took place around 4.30 pm when he was returning home. As he reached near Karnail’s residence, the accused attacked him with baseball bats and hockey sticks.

Snatching

Two motorcycle-borne youths snatched a mobile phone from Rajan Bhardwaj, a resident of Phase X, Mohali, last night.

In his complaint to the police, Rajan said he was on his way to the Phase X market when two youths snatched his mobile phone and fled from the spot. A case has been registered.

Body found

ZIRAKPUR: A 40-year-old man was found dead under mysterious circumstances near lottery bazaar here this morning. The deceased, identified as Dhanpal Jain, alias Babu, was a resident of Baltana.

The police said some passersby informed it about the incident. The body was taken to the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital.

Sources said Dhanpal worked at lottery bazaar. The police said the body was sent for an autopsy.

Parvesh takes BTS Cricket Academy home

Unbeaten half century by Parvesh Sharma (58) helped BTS Cricket Academy, Chandigarh, beat Saint Soldier Cricket Academy, Panchkula, by 10 wickets in the first Inter Academy U-13 Cricket Tournament being held at Hansraj Cricket Academy, Sector 6, here today.

Electing to bat first, Saint Soldier School Cricket Academy scored 124 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their stipulated 25 overs. Vaibhav Sharma 36, Shashant Chaudhary 20 and Vaibhav Mahajan 17 were the main scorers. For BTS Academy, Snehit was the pick of the bowlers as he scalped three wickets giving away 14 runs. Shubham Arora and Akhil Guleria took two wickets each giving away 13 and 6 runs, respectively.

In reply, BTS Academy, easily achieved the target of 128 runs without losing any wicket in just 20.5 overs. Two openers Parvesh Sharma and Youvraj Gill did not allow any liberty to Saint Soldier bowlers and remained unbeaten on 58 and 39, respectively.

Parvesh Sharma of BTS Academy was declared man of the match.

In the second match, Saupins School Cricket Academy, Chandigarh, beat Little Flower Convent School Cricket Academy, Panchkula, by nine wickets.

Electing to bat first, Little Flower Academy could not face the tight bowling of Saupins academy and were bundled out for 94 runs in 24.3 overs. Sagar Sachdeva 28, Himanshu 12, Vinesh 11 and Ankur Chaudhary 10 were the only batsmen who faced stiff bowling with some resistance. For Saupins Cricket Academy, Shubaman and Shubham Sood were the pick of the bowlers, as they scalped three wickets each giving away 14 and 9 runs, respectively.

Chasing the victory target of 95 runs, Saupins School Cricket Academy scored 98 runs in just 10.3 overs and losing just one wicket in the process. Ramandeep Singh 59 not out and Nipun Bhargava 34 were the main scorers. For Little Flower, Ankur Chaudhary was the only bowler who took one wicket giving away 30 runs.

Ramandeep Singh of Saupins School Cricket Academy was declared man of the match.

Sahil Sharma of DAVC bt Mayank Kapoor (DAV) in the men’s singles final by 7-11, 11-8, 12-10, 7-11, 11-4 and 11-9.

In the women’s final, Nadia Saini bt Kalyani 11-9, 8-11, 11-9, 6-11, 12-10 and 11-9.

Aashima pockets U-19 tennis title

Aashima Garg of Satluj Public School won the U-19 girls event by defeating Aditi of the same school 6-0 in the ninth Satluj Open Tennis Tournament which concluded here today.

More than 75 students from various schools and clubs of Panchkula and neighbouring districts participated in the tournament. Krit Serai, principal, Satluj Public School, Sector 4, gave away prizes to the winners.

DP Azad Cricket Academy on winning spree

Continuing with their winning spree DP Azad Cricket Academy (DPCA) drubbed Ropar Cricket Academy by nine wickets in U-17 Leslie Gordon Carver Inter-Academy Tournament conducted by DP Azad Academy here today.

Batting first, RCA were bundled out on meager 69 in 16.3 overs.

Lovejit Singh took four wickets, conceding 14 runs, followed by Anmol Rattan, who took three for nine.

In reply, DPCA overhauled the target in 19.1 overs. Karan Aggarwal made unbeaten 41 runs to enable his team put a total of 70 for 1.

Vivek was the lone wicket-taker for RCA.

In the second match, Government Model School Cricket Academy, Sector 19, beat Tau Devi Lal Cricket Academy, Sector 3, Panchkula, by 39 runs.

GMSSS-19 batted first and put on 229 all out in 38.5 overs.

In reply, the entire team of Tau Devi Lal academy was sent back on 190 runs in 37.1 overs.

Ropar CA: 69 all out in 16.3 overs (Akshdeep 10, Lovejit Singh 4 for 14, Anmol Rattan 3 for 9 and Jagpreet Singh 2 for 20).

Public Sports Club retain title

Public Sports Club, Sector 56, retain the team championship by scoring 230 points in the 7th Sub-Junior and Junior Weightlifting Championship that concluded at Sector 42 here today.

Weightlifting Coaching Centre, Sector 42, bagged the second position with 223 points, while Chandigarh Weightlifting Association team got third place with 143 points.

The championship saw several state records broken during the four-day championship that concluded late last night.

Geet Mohan Singh created two state records from 80 kg to 88 kg in total from 147 kg to 148 kg.

The previous record was set up Akashdeep Singh in 2006. Similarly, Vivek Nadda set three state records in snatch events from 96 kg to 102 kg and in total from 213 kg to 225 kg previously set by Surinder Singh of Weightlifting Coaching Club in 2009.

Haryana lads upset Maharashtra

Haryana boys (U-19) badminton team upset Maharashtra in quarterfinals and sailed into the semifinal of the Inter-Zonal Junior National Badminton Championship being held at Yanam in Andhra Pradesh.

The team beat Maharashtra by 2-1 in the quaterfinals. Khatri from Haryana team played a key role in the victory by beating beat Sarang Lakhani with 21-12, 14-21, 21-9. Akshit Mahajan on the other hand played the first single and lost to Deepankar Dey of Maharashtra 20-22, 15-21.

Akshit and Deepak combined well to beat Sarang Lakhani and Vishal Dev of Maharashtra with 21-14, 21-15.

Haryana will now meet Andhra Pardesh in the semifinal.
