Bedtime stories

For those who don’t watch TV, the concept of prime time doesn’t make any sense. It is a separate matter that those who do watch television, most programmes like Big Boss don’t make any sense. There are people who take pride in saying, "Actually, I don’t watch TV at all." But the hoi polloi, who don’t have any other option or source of entertainment, do watch prime time television shows between 8 pm and 11 pm, whether these shows are good, bad or ugly.

So when the news came that Big Boss and Rakhi ka Insaaf had been taken off prime time television on account of vulgarity and abusive language, children heaved a sigh of relief. The reason? Because children thought it is just as well as most elderly people sleep by 11 pm and the kids could watch these "adult-rated" programmes with more freedom.

Youngsters in metros as such hang out till late at night and settle in their bedrooms only after 11 pm. So their prime time viewing probably starts after that time. Those who retire early but are keen to learn new abuses from Rakhi, will have to stay up, of course. Since programmes like Rakhi ka Insaf are not being allowed on the prime time by the Information and Broadcast Ministry, NDTV Imagine might come up with Rakhi ka Kirtan or Rakhi ka Pravachan to woo viewers.
