‘Network with local child rights bodies must’
Ambala, November 22 He further said making children work as labourers was rampant not only in the agriculture sector but also in industries like matchbox, leather, stone quarries, brick-kilns, and many more. These children are denied their right to childhood, to education, to play and to dream like normal children. This practice has been continuing in blatant violation of the constitution and the laws. The workshop attracted representatives of brick -kilns, hotels, restaurants, NGO representatives, lawyers, besides the officers of the district administration and the police. This deliberation aspired addressing issues related to the district-level task force and strategy aiming at preventing child labour, child trafficking and the status of child’s right to equitable education in general. Deputy Commissioner Sameer Pal Srow said that the workshop was held with a motive to build consensus on future strategies to collate with other child rights organisations and youths for the implementation of laws enacted for the purpose of child-rights protection. Also, the objective of this workshop was to build a network with the local child rights organisations of the state. Srow further said that the vast majority of bonded child labourers came from poor families. He urged brick-kiln and restaurant owners to be careful about the health of those children working for them. The children's parents borrow money from rich moneylenders. However, when the parents are unable to pay back the loans, the moneylenders keep their children, and force to work in factories until the money is paid back with exorbitant interest, he added. Those present on this occasion included RN Mehlawat, a representative of Human Rights Commission, and Anupam Malik, Joint Commissioner, Labour Department. |
