LET's begin with a lesson in physics. When two clouds, having opposite charges, strike each other, thunder and lightning follow. That was the reason when a ‘Badal’ (Manpreet) struck another ‘Badal’ (Sukhbir), a political thunderstorm with high-voltage lightning was seen. Alas! We could use some of this power for running tubewells in our fields in Punjab. Let us switch over from electric charges to political charges. Surinder Singla, former Finance Minister from the Congress, says that, in fact, there was no debt-waiver offer from the Centre. He also alleges that Manpreet was a poor finance minister. I would, rather, say both Singla and Manpreet were good ministers without finance. In contrast to Singla’s statement, Congress MP Pratap Singh Bajwa holds that Manpreet is an educated and nationalistic leader and should be welcomed by the Congress. The Punjab Pradesh Congress should immediately call an emergency meeting and decide whether to praise Manpreet Badal or not. The
wise-and-educated-in-London- School-of-Economics-kind of image has
done more harm to Manpreet. I asked an Akali friend, "Why are you
bent upon expelling an educated minister from your party?" He
said, "Only an illiterate minister can take care of the state’s
empty treasury with confidence."
