Hrithik Roshan, who will hit the screens with
Guzaarish this festive season, talks about the AT the gala music launch of Guzaarish, Hrithik was all charged up to take on media queries. It is hard to believe that an actor full of such vitality and life would be playing a magician, who becomes a quadriplegic after a trick goes a wrong in Guzaarish. It is difficult to imagine India’s handsome hunk being relegated to a wheelchair in a film. But then, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for deconstructing star images. It’s Hrithik’s turn now.
What is your one guzaarish for the festive season? I don’t have any guzaarish, I believe in karma. I believe that if you work hard enough, you get what you deserve to get. I am not the kind to plead or ask. You have a penchant for magic tricks; do you ever perform some for your sons? There are some tricks I can do but my children are too young to understand those. They cannot yet be surprised or shocked by them. I can take a playing card and make it disappear. I did that in Kites. In Kaho Na Pyar Hai also, I had pulled a rose out of my sleeve. Ethan’s role in Guzaarish is perhaps your most challenging role so far? To begin with, it was my most challenging film but it also became my easiest film working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. There was such fantastic guidance and so much love given – he really pampered us. It was a beautiful experience. Ethan has been confined for 14 years to the wheelchair and he never shows his suffering. The most challenging aspect of the role was to portray the depth of emotions that a man feels when he loses everything at a young age and he can’t even move a finger, he has no sensation. What happens then, it became my responsibility to portray the dignity with which quadriplegics live. Also to show the courage and hope they wake up with every morning. How has the film changed you? It has brought smiles to my life. It taught me that it is possible to smile through all your problems. Every problem has a solution – that’s the lesson I learnt from my quadriplegic friends who I take care of and they take care of me. Listening to them talk about their lives`85 how they smile through everything`85 sitting with them for six hours and coming out to realise that I had been smiling and laughing throughout. Then I realised that they have the power to make me laugh. After that, how can I can go home and complain about less salt in food? It certainly changes your life it does. So have you become less complaining now? Oh yes! You can’t complain that the fan is not working, the AC is making noises – these are such stupid, trivial things. You said two’s not enough with Ash, what is it that clicks with her? Working with Aishwarya is such a wonderful experience. It is nice to find a co-star, who shares your passion for films and your desire to achieve excellence through films. The two films we have worked in clearly shows our desire to make a great film. It is not a selfish sentiment. Aishwarya said she was always quick to point out the catch in a magic trick. She’s very sharp, oh yes, she is. But I am sharper, I never got caught. Does being a hit jodi at the boxoffice also help? It excites the audience to come and watch a film. But when you are starting a new film, it is not a hit jodi any more, you are resetting yourself to zero and giving it your best shot in order to create another hit film or hit jodi. Which of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s films is your favourite? Do you think he has been consistent vis-à-vis his creative output? I remember watching Khamoshi at Chandan theatre in Mumbai with my friends. After the film, I just could not move, I was completely enthralled by it. But without any bias, I would say that Guzaarish is his best yet. As for the success and failure of a film – that is a different concept. But he has done full justice to his vision in every film. How are you celebrating Diwali this year? I will be celebrating Diwali out of Mumbai as I have problems with the pollution here. My son has a bronchial condition, so I’d rather not be here. There will be a traditional pooja in the house. When I was a kid, I used to rejoice and buy 10,000 crackers but now as a parent I realise that it is very polluting to burst crackers. After Guzaarish? I have just wrapped up Zoya Akhtar’s film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and the next is Agneepath. The Krrish sequel is still on hold as dad is yet not completely satisfied with the story. He wants it to be an emotional journey. Last but not the least, hasn’t Hollywood been calling? They have been knocking at my door for some time, but I have not been excited by their offers so far. Sanjay Leela Bhansali as a music director? (a long drawn sigh of pleasure) Pure genius! No one could have justified the music of the film as he has. Your third film with Ash. Like three is just not enough! Guzaarish experience in one line. It is like describing nature with all its contrasting elements birth and death. Just like nature, the film is beyond judgment for me, beyond good and bad, it is just is what is --- the manifestation of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s vision. A beautiful dream. Your favourite song in the film? 100 gram zindagi ...
