4 injured in clash over land

Fatehgarh Sahib, October 27
Four persons including two women received injuries in a clash over property dispute here this evening.

The land reportedly belongs to municipal council and two groups have put their claim over the land.

The injured have been identified as Parwinder Kaur, Surjit Kaur, Bhupinder Singh and Ajay Kumar.

The relatives of injured raised slogans against the police outside the police post.

The incident occurred near Sirhind telephone exchange. The area residents said three of the injured belonged to one group, who entered in clash following stone pelting and firing incident.

The two injured women have been referred to a hospital in Patiala following bullet injuries.

Area residents also said that one of the groups that wanted to build a community centre claimed that the land belonged to the municipal council and said the council had recently approved a resolution to build the community centre.

Senior police officials reached the spot and said they were recording the statements of victims and case would be registered against the guilty.

Stress to obey traffic rules

To educate the student community about traffic rules and to create awareness to obey the rules, the traffic police today organised seminars at Pine Grove Public School. SP Singh, DSP Bassi Pathana, was the chief guest, while Rakesh Sidiqui, traffic in charge, presided over the function.

Addressing the students, the DSP said as the traffic had increased manifolds and infrastructure was the same, only traffic sense and obeying traffic rules could save human lives.

Vasant Valley corner glory in basketball

The CBSE Cluster Basketball Tournament began at Buddha Dal Public School. Around 48 schools from all over Punjab and Haryana are taking part in the tournament.Municipal Commissioner Manjit Singh Narang was the chief guest.

He welcomed the teams. The tournament began with the flag hoisting and oath-taking ceremonies.

A cultural programme was also organised on the occasion. The first match was played between Vasant Valley, Laddakothi, and St Mary’s School, Patiala. Vasant Valley defeated St Mary’s by 52 points.

Youth fest begins at Pbi varsity

The three-day Punjabi University Inter-Zone Inter-College youth festival began at Guru Tegh Bahadur Hall of the university. Vice-Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh inaugurated the event.

More than 1,000 students are taking part in the festival. Around 37 events will be held at GTB Hall, Kala Bhawan, Arts Auditorium and Students’ Home. — TNS

Ambala to have food street soon

Night life in Ambala will soon be brighten up with a night food street coming up soon near the general bus stand here.

This move will be a boon the tourism, as the location for the night food street is both near to the bus stand and railway station, providing people with hygienic food at cheaper prices.

Official sources say that the food street will have around twelve restaurants, which would offer both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items.

Municipal Corporation, Ambala, has planned to set up food street facing the National Highway no.1 near the bus stand, Ambala Cantonment, comprising various restaurants.

The administrator-cum-DC, Ambala, Sameer Pal Srow said there were about twelve dhabas functioning at this place for the past several years. He said the administration proposes to build a lane for all dhabas, which would be housed in similar looking restaurants.

The proposed restaurants would have provision for eateries on the ground floor, while the kitchens would be located on the first floor.

Ambala DC said a fresh blue print of proposed complex had already been prepared. He said all double storey new restaurants having sitting place for the visitors on the ground floor, kitchen on the first floor and a park maintained by the corporation in front would have a similar look to give a unique facelift to the town.

He added that a meeting had already been held with the dhaba owners, who had welcomed the proposal to construct double storey prestigious restaurants having similar outer look for which site plans would be approved by the Municipal Corporation. He said dhaba owners had promised not to encroach upon so as to avoid traffic hindrance on the highway.

Reversion Case
Full Bench to decide

Due to difference in opinion between members of the Bench on an application filed by HC Gera, a biologist-cum-anti-malaria officer, the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has decided to constitute a full Bench to settle the difference in opinion between the two members.

Claiming his reversion from anti-malaria officer to the post of entomologist-cum-parasitalogist to be manipulated, the applicant had filed a case seeking relief.

Passing the orders, the tribunal held, “In view of the difference in opinion between the two members of the Bench, the Registry is directed to place the records of this case before the chairman in terms of provisions of Section 26 of the Administrative Tribunals Act, 1985, who may constitute a full Bench or may refer the matter to a larger Bench for reconciling the difference in opinion between the two members.”

The case is slated to come up for hearing on November 29.

One of the members of the Bench dismissed the plea of the applicant and the other member of the Bench provided relief to him.

Shalimar Estates told to pay relief

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum today directed Shalimar Estates to pay Rs 68,115 to the complainant.

Pronouncing the orders, the forum stated that respondents were guilty of adopting unfair trade practices in collecting the money without obtaining prior sanction to set up a colony in Panchkula. The forum directed the respondents to refund Rs 68,115.

The complainant, Anita Saxena, a resident of Ghaziabad, had stated in the complaint that she had sought allotment of a residential plot in Shalimar Estates Naggal-Alipur (Panchkula), Phase-I, in 2002 and was allotted six-marla plot.

She said she had deposited instalments to the tune of Rs 68,115. It was alleged that considerable period had gone, but no project had started on the site, where the respondents were supposed to erect houses.

In its reply, Shalimar Estates denied that the complainant had ever visited its office. It was asserted that the Haryana government had wrongly launched the criminal proceedings against the respondents, which had been challenged before the High Court, wherein stay had been granted and the petition stood admitted.

Moreover, the possession of the plot would be given to the complainant, but the complainant chose to approach the forum just to harass, pressurise and lower down reputation of the respondents.

Man held for car theft
Driver claims he traced vehicle

The police has arrested a man for robbing a taxi driver of a car he had hired at Manali. The police tracked down the accused through the location of his mobile phone in less than 24 hours.

On the other hand, the driver claimed that he traced the car through the global positioning system installed in it, located it in Sector 37 and informed the police.

The additional SHO of the Mani Majra police station, sub-inspector Ranjit Singh, said the accused was identified as 29-year-old Sanjay Kumar of Una.

He had hired a Tata Indica (HP01K-2529) from Anu Sharma of Kullu, who sent his driver, Ravi Kumar of Kangra, with the car.

The driver told the police that the accused sped away with the car from near Kala Gram here around 4 pm yesterday. The police arrested the accused around 2 pm.

The police said a case of robbery under Section 392 of the Indian Penal code was registered against the accused. He would be produced in a local court tomorrow.

Youth killed in accident

An unidentified pedestrian in his mid-twenties was killed in a hit-and-run road accident at Daria village here yesterday. The police said the victim was knocked down by a motorcycle near a liquor shop. The victim was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, where he later died. A case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving was registered against the motorcyclist, who had not been identified so far.

Car stolen

SPS Boparai of Sector 25 reported to the police that his Maruti Zen (HR26X-7544) was stolen from a parking lot at Sector 37 here on Tuesday. A case of theft was registered.

Cop booked for breach of trust

Mohali, October 27
The police has booked a police personnel on a charge of criminal breach of trust by public servant, who had allegedly lost his wireless set while he was on the duty.

According to the police, Daljeet Singh, who worked with control room, was booked under Section 409 of the IPC. Daljeet tried to cook up a story to cover up his irresponsible act, but after investigations he was held responsible for the loss.

Daljeet had initially told the police that he had searched a car while he was on the duty and during the search process, the wireless set fell in the car but before he could remove it the driver fled.

Attacked

A resident of Phase X has filed a complaint with the police that she was allegedly attacked by unidentified person with a sharp-edged weapon last night.

Anita Hans told the police that she was standing outside her house last night when two of her neighbours started abusing her. An unidentified person attacked her with a knife. She got injured and had to be admitted to a civil hospital. Booked for rape The police has booked a Panchkula resident on rape charges.

A woman, resident of Zirakpur, who had come to open an immigration office in Mohali, told the police that she had come to Phase IX yesterday and when she met Nipuj Gupta, a resident of Panchkula, in connection with the office she was allegedly raped. The police has booked Gupta under Section 376 of the IPC.

Robbed

Zirakpur: A Baltana-based shopkeeper was allegedly robbed at gunpoint by two robbers here on Tuesday night. The miscreants managed to flee with ready-made garments worth thousands of rupees and cash worth Rs 6,500 from a ready-made garments shop Big Brand near the Baltana Telephone Exchange.

In his complaint to the police, Surinder Pal Singh stated that the incident occurred around 8 pm when he was sitting with his relative and two youths entered into his shop and asked him to show a pair jeans pant. After selecting the jeans pant, the accused told him to alter it, but he refused as all the tailors shop was closed.

Later, the accused asked him to show designer shirts, when he bent down, one of the accused pointed out a pistol on Surinder’s temple and locked them in a 
trial room.

After some time when the victims managed to come out from the trial room they found that the garments from the shop were missing. The police said investigations were on and the accused would be arrested soon. — TNS

Car Thefts: Police remand for accused

The police today brought eight members of a gang involved in car thefts on production warrants from Rajpura.

The DSP (Crime), Satbir Singh, said the Rajpura police had busted the gang last month and recovered several vehicles from them, including four Mahindra Bolero jeeps stolen from various parts of the city. The accused have been identified as Ajmer Singh, Varinder Singh, Amir Khan, Sushant, Satbir, Sanjay, Ali and Priya Watts, all lodged in Patiala Jail.

The crime branch today produced them before a local court, which remanded the accused in police custody till October 29. Satbir Singh said the jeeps were stolen from Sectors 15, 22 and 27.

Satbir Singh said Ajmer Singh and Varinder Singh were arrested last year in connection with the theft of Maruti Gypsy vehicles, including some police vehicles.

They were in Burail jail and were released in July this year. They formed a gang and again started stealing vehicles.

The DSP said the interrogation of the accused would lead to the cracking of more cases of vehicle theft. They would also learn where the accused disposed of stolen vehicles.

Rising from the ashes

Almost a year ago, the world seemed to have ended for him, but former Indian hockey player Baljit Singh proved that the ill-fated day of July 17, 2009, was just a temporary setback and not a failure.

Having lost his right eye during a practice session, for many, Baljit was a history, but he rose from the ashes and is now being lauded for winning the title of “best performer” in the Olympian Surjit Singh Gold Cup that concluded in Jalandhar recently.

Chief guest Punjab’s Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal gave him a cash prize of Rs 5,100 for winning the title.

In final match of the tournament, the talented custodian won all hearts by stopping two penalty strokes in the tie-breaker to help his team Indian Oil register a 6-5 win against Air India.

Talking to the TNS, elated Baljit said his “post injury” struggle had turned into a success. “Now I can say that I have made a comeback,” said Baljit Singh proudly.

When asked how much difficulty he faces while manning the bar with one eye, the gritty player said, “After suffering an injury, I learnt that with dedication and will power, every difficulty can be overcome. While playing a match, I never let my weakness come in my way. My focus is always on the game and improvement of my skills.”

The talented custodian was part of the Indian squad, which had won Asia Cup in 2007 and Azlan Shah Cup in 2009. He had also represented the country in Punjab Gold Cup (silver) in 2009, Champions Challenge (bronze) and Azlan Shah Cup (bronze) in 2007.

“Now I am looking forward to make a comeback in Indian team again. I know it is not easy but I am ready for the big show,” said Baljit.

Punjab amass 522 runs

Punjab scored 522 runs in their first innings during the U-22 Tournament for Col CK Nayudu Trophy at Gwalior.

In their first innings, MPCA were restricted to 232 in 83.4 overs.

With an overnight score of 385 for 5 in 94 overs, Punjab team was strengthened further by Anshul Tripathi with his 151 runs. Mandeep Singh (100) and Kunwar Raina (33), Amitoze Singh (27), Mandeep Singh (100) and Himanshu Chawla also chipped in. Other notable scorers were Taruwar Kohli (43) and Rajwinder Singh (43 n o).

AA Ali completed his five-wicket haul, returning with figure 5 for 151, while IS Pandey took 2 for 95.

In reply, MPCA scored 137 for 1 at the close of day’s play. Satyam Chaudhary (46) and HG Sagar (62 n o), and Ubirla (14 n o) were the main scorers for MPCA.

5-wicket win for GGMSSS-18

Government Girls Model Senior Secondary School (GGMSSS), Sector 18, drubbed GMSSS, Sector 26, by five wickets in the Inter-School Cricket Tournament U-19 (girls) here today.

After winning the toss, GMSSS-26 elected to bat first. The team scored 61 runs for the loss of six wickets. In reply, GGMSSS-18 chased the target comfortably for the loss of five wickets in 11.3 overs.

In the second outing, IS Dev Samaj School-21 lost to GMSSS-35 by one wicket.

IS Dev Samaj team set the target of 67, hitting 66 runs for the loss of seven wickets in alloted overs. GMSSS-35 overhauled the target in 13.5 overs, losing nine wickets in the course.

Punjab team announced

Pankaj Dharmani has been selected Punjab skipper for the Ranji Trophy Tournament.

The meeting was convened by MP Pandove, secretary, PCA. The team was selected for first two matches against UPCA (from November 1 to 4 at Meerut) and KSCA (November 10 to 13). Yuvraj Singh has been included in the Punjab team for the first two matches.

Other members of the team are: Ravi Inder Singh, Sarul Kanwar, Uday Kaul (wicket keeper), Yuvraj Singh, Vishwas Bhalla, Karan Goel, Sarabjit Singh Ladda, Rajwinder Singh, Navdeep Singh, Harmeet Singh Bansal, Rahul Sharma, Bipul Sharma, Mandeep Singh and Bharat Lumba.

Medium pacer Navdeep Singh of Jalandhar and opening batsman Sarul Kanwar of Chandigarh are the two newcomers.

The team will leave for Meerut on November 30. Bhupinder Singh Senior will be the coach, Devinder Arora will be the batting coach, Nikhil NP will be the physio, Amit Kumar video analyst and Adrian Dias will be the trainer.
