Over three and a half centuries ago after Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal in memory of his wife, it continues to be one of the major attractions of the world.
Secrets of the Taj Mahal on Sunday at 10 p.m. on the National Geographic Channel takes you behind-the-scenes and reveals reveals that the love story of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal was legendary even in their lifetime. The Mughal Prince was 15 when he had asked for the hand of the courtly, elegant 14-year-old from a Persian aristocratic family. It was twenty more years before he finally became Emperor, after years of flight from his jealous brothers.
It was in his lifetime that he built the Taj Mahal with its delicate inlaid gemstones and made it an immortal statement of the artistic spirit brought to India by the Mughals. This resplendent white marble is till today the single largest reason why tourists come to India.
