Aided school teachers not paid for seven months
Ambala, October 17 He said at present there were 208 government-aided schools running in the state in which about 1,000 teachers were working. Bansal and other executive members of the association alleged that the government had not instructed the authorities concerned for disbursement of salaries of about 60 per cent government-aided schools in the state. Besides salaries, the teachers also demanded increasing the standard of these schools. A large number of seats for teachers were still lying vacant in almost all schools and teachers were overburdened. Demanding immediate solution to all problems faced by the teachers, Bansal said the teachers would be forced to launch an agitation in this regard if their long pending demands were not met soon. The association general secretary, along with other members of the association, met local MLA Anil Vij on Friday and urged him to look into their demands sympathetically. |

Effigies torched amid tight security
Ambala, October 17 The notable feature of the burning of the effigies was conducted in the evening. Moreover, the effigies were set to fire under the scrutiny of the police and the Gandhi Ground was well guarded by police personnel. SP Shashank Anand, along with other police officials, oversaw the rituals ranging from the processions to burning of the effigies. This celebration starts from Navratras and ends with the tenth day festival of Dasehra and marks the end of scorching summer and the start of winters. The theatrical enactment of this dramatic encounter is held throughout the country in which every section of people participates enthusiastically. It is also called Vijayadashmi as this day marks the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana. Vijayadashami is considered to be an auspicious day for the Indian householder, on which he worships power. According to scriptures, by worshipping the Shakti on these nine-days the householders attain threefold power i.e. physical, mental and spiritual, which helps them to progress in life without any difficulty. Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said the people must also burn the evil within them and thus follow the path of truth and goodness, bearing in mind the instance of Ravana, who despite all his might and majesty was destroyed for his evil ways. He honoured the members of Shri Ramlila Committee, Ambala Cantonment, and lauded the efforts of organisers to make this programme a success. 2 killed in mishap
Ambala, October 17 According to information, the occupants of Sumo car had gone to attend a wedding and they were on their way home when the incident occurred. The injured, Ram Singh, Jooma Ram, Rinku, Bittu, Vimal, Dev, Gurdas, Ram Chander and Balkar were rushed to a local hospital. The police has registered a case in this connection. |
3 convicts move HC
Panchkula, October 17 The accused, including Pankaj Kumar and Neeraj Sharma, contended in their petition that they were falsely implicated in the case. It was on September 21 that Additional District and Sessions Judge Ritu Garg awarded the jail term to Karan Sharma, Jaswant Singh, Saurabh Sharma, alias Meenu, Sumit Kumar, Baldev Singh, Rajiv Sharma, Hemant Kumar, Yogesh Kumar, alias Vicky, Shaadman Khan, Pankaj Kumar, alias Munna, Neeraj Sharma, Amit Kumar and Pankaj Kumar, alias Rinku, residents of Kalka and Dharampur (Himachal Pradesh). Earlier on April 19 the police, while filing chargesheet against them, had mentioned that on the night of December 22 last year the police had rescued the victim from Railway Colony. After getting information from locals that a girl was locked in a house, a police party raided the house and arrested one of the accused, Saurabh, besides recovering the girl. The police also recovered two cars and a motorcycle from the accused. The three convicts said they had nothing to do with this case and demanded quashing of the lower court orders. |

Breach of peace charge
Mohali, October 17 After going through the papers produced by the police, Fiza was released by the magistrate after she furnished surety bonds. The police claimed that it acted on a complaint lodged by her neighbour Ram Krishan, who stated that Fiza had thrown eggs at his house and claimed to have captured her action in a CCTV footage. The SDM asked her to present herself on October 20 in connection with another complaint filed against her by the police. In the complaint forwarded by the police under Sections 107 and 150 of the Cr PC, Ram Krishan had stated that she had been harassing them. She claimed that the police was acting in a one-sided manner and was taking action on the complaints of her neighbours and was not taking any action on complaints lodged by her. She claimed that neither the police nor her neighbours had any footage to show that she was throwing things at their house. The SDM asked to Fiza to produce documents on the next date to show that no action was being taken on her complaints. She also stated the police had misused various provisions of the law to arrest her late in the night. “It was not that important to arrest me late in the night and my side of the story was not being listened to by the police,” she said. The police said when she refused to cooperate, it had no alternative but to arrest her. |

Four held with stolen mobikes
Chandigarh, October 17 The police said that 21-year-old Johnny and 20-year-old Ashok Kumar were arrested from a checkpoint set up in Sector 42 while the two minors were apprehended from Sector 35 following a tip-off. Both Johnny and Ashok were produced before a local court and were remanded to two-day police custody, while the minors were sent to the Sector 25 Juvenile Home. The SHO of the Sector 36 police station said they have recovered four stolen motorcycles from the accused with fake registration number plates. Johnny and Ashok have been booked for various offences in past and they were released from jail around 20 days back. They had joined hands with minors and formed a gang to commit snatchings. |

Burglars decamp with jewellery
Panchkula, October 17 The thieves also took away artificial gold jewellery lying along with silver jewellery. The owner of house on ground floor, Vijay Gupta, said he was out of station yesterday. The incident came to his notice only when he reached his house this afternoon. His tenant living on the first floor, Arvind Gupta, had also gone to attend a marriage party at Delhi. The thieves broke into the ground floor through the window of the kitchen from front side of the house. |

10 arrested for selling old tyres in Burail
Chandigarh, October 17 Sources said the gang was busted following a tip-off. The accused were operating from the Burail market. The police raided the shops in the market and recovered the retread tyres from Gopal Singh, owner of Neelkanth Tyres, Mohal Lal, owner of Shiv Shankar Tyres, Sanjay, owner of Shiv Motors, Jagdaish, owner of Ashoka Tyres, Ganesh, owner of Bajrang Tyres, Sunil, owner of Krishna Tyres, Partap Singh, owner of PK Tyres and two mechanics, Ranbir Singh and Gopal. Police said the accused used to purchase worn out tyres for Rs 15 or so and then sell them after re-treading for Rs 400 or more. They used to dupe customers saying the company had launched new tyres recently. They had set up small workplaces behind their shops to re-tread repair old tyres. |

After clinching bronze in gymnastics during CWG
Chandigarh, October 17 “A one-year training camp was held in Pune, where equipment from a French company was made available,” said 19-year-old Ashish, who was in the city today. Ashish clinched a bronze medal in the floor exercise category at New Delhi to give India its first medal in gymnastic since the beginning of the Commonwealth Games in 1930. After the bronze medal, he won a silver medal in the vaults category. The life of this gymnast, who belongs to a lower middle class family, was never a bed of roses. “It seems my hard work has paid off. I wanted to quit the games when I was 13-years-old, as I failed to make it to the prestigious Tulit Peter Championship in Hungary by just 0.10 points. This was my second defeat. At that stage, I thought of giving up gymnastics,” said Ashish. “But my parents motivated me and I think that was the turning point,” he added. “Now, I am eyeing a gold medal in Olympics,” he said. The gymnast thanked his coaches for his feat. “Our coaches Vladimir Chertkov, Ashok Mishra and Praveen Sharma played a vital role in the win. They trained us for 18 months,” he said. “The victory has motivated me a lot and now I am looking forward to showcase my talent in the upcoming Asian Games,” Ashish added. |

Mohali, October 17 Jaitley showed a good display of shots and vollies in the game, which lasted around 70 minutes. Jaitley broke Kamboj in the third game in the first set to take 2-1 lead. He again broke him in the fourth and sixth game to take the first set 6-0. In the second set, Kamboj took the lead of 3-0, but Jaitley held his nerves and made the score 4-4 before breaking Kamboj in the ninth game. In another interesting match, Sachit Malhotra upset top seed Sagar Bains of YPS, Mohali, in the boys’ under-14 category by 6-1, 6-1 to win the top honours.
