Late release of schedule raises eyebrows
Akash Ghai
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 12
The Chandigarh Football Association’s (CFA) act of releasing the schedule of under-16 trials at the 11th hour has raised many an eyebrow. The association conducted trials today to select as many as 30 probables for the under-16 Chandigarh team to represent the city in the North Zone Sub-Junior National Football Championship to be held in Haldwani (Uttrakhand) in the last week of October.

Many budding soccer players, coaches and former international soccer players were miffed over the functioning of the associationand said that giving information about the trials on the same day of their schedule was intentional on the part of the
association.

“Giving information at the 11th hour only indicated that they (the CFA) wanted to pick their favourites in the team,” alleged Harjinder Singh, former Indian captain and coach of the Chandigarh Football Academy, Sector 42.

“Is it appropriate to give news on the same date of the scheduled trials?” asked Harjinder Singh. “I am sure that many interested players and other officials have missed the trials as many have not read the paper this morning or many have gone out of station or many must not have prepared for it. In my viewpoint such news should be published at least two weeks before the schedule,” said Harjinder Singh.

On the other hand, CFA general secretary Rakesh Bakhshi clarified that the sub-junior national tournament had been pre-poned from November to Octoberand that was the main reason behind giving the news at the 11th hour.

Another former international player Kunwar Vinod Kumar was also of the view that the CFA’s act was surely objectionable.

“You see, they (CFA) have not conducted the U-16 tournament here, which should have been conducted before the nationals. Those players playing in the tournament should be selected. How can you judge the abilities of
hundreds of the players in one-hour trial? I think it is not more than an eyewash,” said Kunwar Vinod,
who also organises soccer tournaments for local budding players.

While the CFA claimed that they had sent letters to all schools, clubs and academies about the trials in advance, many schools denied having received any such letter.
