MNCs hire 852 students
Kharar, October 11 At least 852 candidates secured job offers from over 30 multinational companies that participated in the drive. These included Dell, HDFC Bank, Volkswagen, IBM, Competent, Quark City, JCBL, KFC, Convergys, Audi, Globe Toyota, Serco, Tech Mahindra, Big Bazaar, Dish TV, Carnation Autos and Standard Chartered. Volkswagen, Audi and Globe Toyota selected 32 candidates each, Dell 20, Competent 45, IBM 30, and HDFC 25. Indian Army also recruited 172 commissioned officers under the University Entry Scheme wherein over 700 students participated for the drive. Recruitments were made under the 20th University Entry Scheme for Permanent Commission in Army for July 2010-11. Besides students of Indo Global College of Engineering, those of nearby colleges like SPCET Lalru, PCET Lalru, SUSCET Tangori, GGSCMT Kharar, Doaba College, CCET, Sector 26, Chandigarh, and IET Bhaddal also participated in the drive. |

KV opens branch at Reuna Uchha village
Fatehgarh Sahib, October 11 The DC said that besides science, commerce and arts, students would be able to take up classical music, sports and other activities. The construction work of the new building would soon begin wherein science and computer laboratory would be made available for schoolchildren.He asked the school principal to teach Punjabi to children besides English and Hindi. Students performed on stage during the occasion. To keep the surroundings of the school green the Deputy Commissioner planted a sapling near the school premises. School principal LM Khantwal said that so far 135 students were admitted in the school. |

Model Industrial Township
Ambala, October 11 Most of the villagers belonged to Panjokhra Sahib, Mandore, Khatoli, Zanetpur and Garnala villages whose land has to be acquired. The villagers have formed Zameen Bachao Sanghrash Samiti to fight against the MIT issue. Later, the Samiti submitted a memorandum to the city magistrate in this regard. The villagers said in the memorandum that they would not allow the state government to acquire their valuable land. They warned to launch a state-wide agitation if the government forcibly acquired their land for setting up the MIT. The BJP and the INLD have already offered their support to farmers on this issue while the Congress leaders are favouring the project. The leaders of the Bhartiya Kisan Union have also announced to oppose this project.

Welcome gate comes down, jams traffic
Kharar, October 11 Strong winds in the afternoon knocked down this structure that was installed as a welcome gate for a religious function being held at Balongi. This is the busiest section connecting Chandigarh with parts of Punjab. Being a sales tax barrier it witnesses lot of commotion due to number of loaded trucks waiting clearance. It took more than an hour for the police to ease the traffic congestion. Being festive season, the traffic has increased by quantum. Police officials said some of the traffic was diverted from Balongi to Puncom chowk in Mohali. |

Street turns dumping ground
Bassi Pathana, October 11 A delegation of ward number 6 residents, led by Prof. NK Gupta, met the Deputy Commissioner, the Deputy Director, local government, District Health Officer and local administration and also submitted a written complaint to them, but to no avail. The residents say that epidemic could break in the area with diseases like malaria, viral fever and dengue spreading their wings. They add that heaps of garbage are dumped in this narrow street, in the heart of the town, which connects with a gurudwara, the main market and Shiv Mandir. They say the stench makes it difficult for the commuters to pass by. They have warned the administration, which has turned a blind eye towards the civic condition to take immediate measures to clean the area, that they would not allow anyone to enter the area if any epidemic broke out and caused a loss to the residents. |
Two get life term in murder case
Chandigarh, October 11 The court held Rashid Ahmed and Sahib Chand guilty of murdering Kunwar Pal Singh, a Ram Darbar resident, after taking him to Ambala. They had taken hired the auto-rickshaw to go to Ambala and decided to kill Kunwar to loot him of his vehicle. The incident occurred during the night of December 20, 2008. The accused threw the body into a canal at Ambala, which was later found in a bloated condition after a fortnight near Kurukshetra. Besides life imprisonment, the court slapped a fine of Rs 8,000 each on them. Kunwar of Phase II, Ram Darbar, was the sole breadwinner in the family and was in his thirties. Kunwar is survived by his wife, elderly parents, a brother, a sister and six minor children, including three daughters. |

Admn gave Rs. 1.13 cr to ’84 riot-hit, HC told
Chandigarh, October 11 The Division Bench of Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal and Justice Surya Kant was told that applications were pending before the UT administration for the grant of compensation. Information in this regard was furnished by UT Deputy Commissioner (DC) Brijendra Singh through an affidavit today during the resumed hearing of a public interest litigation, seeking directions to decide the pending compensation applications of 1984 riot victims. The DC said the Chandigarh administration received 143 applications for ex-gratia and other grants and a committee, headed by the DC, was constituted to scrutinise the claims and give its recommendations. After scrutiny of claims, it was found that 67 individuals had not submitted any proof. Apart from these, 10 individuals were terrorist affected and three had availed of rehabilitation grant from the Punjab government. As per the letter of the Government of India dated April 20, families which migrated from other states to the UT were only entitled to receive a rehabilitation grant of Rs 2 lakh per migrant family. The state government from where these families had migrated to the UT should process any other claim of ex-gratia, added the letter. |

Patran MC President’s Post
Chandigarh, October 11 Taking up an appeal filed by rival candidate Vinod Kundra and others, the Division Bench of Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal and Justice Surya Kant directed that re-election be held on October 18 in the office of the Patran municipal council. The Bench also appointed advocate Sajjan Singh Malik as an observer. The entire process would take place in his presence. Patiala Deputy Commissioner has also been directed to ensure peaceful compliance of the order and maintenance of law and order. Raj Kumar had earlier sought directions for declaring him elected as the president. The council poll was held on August 30, 2009, and notification was issued on September 15, 2009. “Undisputedly, Raj Kumar’s name was proposed by local MLA for the post of president and no other name was proposed ... I have no hesitation to hold that in a meeting held to elect the president or vice-president of the municipal council, if only one candidate for the office of president is proposed, he shall be declared elected then and there. “Neither the SDM nor the private respondents stated in their affidavits that other names were ever proposed nor report of the SDM suggests that any name was ever proposed except the name of the petitioner Raj Kumar,” the judge had stated. |

Woman wanted for fraud held in Delhi
Chandigarh, October 11 Sources in the police said the accused, Ranjit Kaur, against whom a lookout circular had been issued, was apprehended at the airport soon after she landed from London. The Chandigarh police received a fax message from the police station at the airport and a Sub-Inspector from the economic offences wing of the Chandigarh police was sent to the airport to arrest her. Ranjit Kaur, one of the five accused, was produced before a local court today, which remanded her to police custody for a day. A case of cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy was registered against her on the complaint of Prem Singh, former sarpanch of Manimajra. It was alleged that she along with Pritam Kaur executed a counterfeit sale deed of a plot belonging to Prem Singh. They executed the sale deed in their name through Jeet Singh, a resident of Manimajra. Ranjit Kaur prepared a general power of attorney in favour of Jagmohan Kumar, who further executed a sale deed in the name of Gurmukh Singh. A local court had passed an order in favour of Prem Singh. Five persons had been arrested in the case. |

Youth held on rape charge
Chandigarh, October 11 The victim in her complaint alleged that the accused took her to Gujarat in July, promising to marry her, but repeatedly raped her. He brought her back to the city on October 9 and deserted her. The police today medically examined the victim and the accused and registered a case of rape, cheating and criminal intimidation against the accused who has been identified as Vicky. The police said the girl aged 17 used to live in Sector 40 before shifting to Kharar. |

Two mobikes stolen
Chandigarh, October 11 Gajpal Singh of Sector 46-C reported to the police that someone stolen his Maruti Swift car (CH04J-6177) from Sector 7 on October 5. In another incident, Taranpreet of Ambala filed a complaint with the police that someone stolen his Hero Honda motorcycle (HR01Z-9200) from Sector 17 on Saturday. Similarly, Nachhatar Singh of Sector 40 lodged a complaint with the police that his Hero Honda motorcycle (HR23D-2320) was stolen from his house on Sunday. Sukhpal Singh of Sector 40 filed a complaint with the police that someone stole the inverter’s battery from his house on Sunday night. Four separate cases of theft were registered. |

Woman sets herself on fire, dies
Chandigarh, October 11 Though the police termed the incident as suicide, it was yet to ascertain the reasons leading to her taking this extreme step. The police said the victim was rushed to the PGI in a critical condition, where she later died. Aarti is survived by her husband Ashutosh, a street vendor by profession, and three children. The police said the incident occurred around 3:30 pm. Aarti locked herself up in her residence, poured kerosene on herself and set herself on fire. Her husband and children were not at home at the time of the incident. Neighbours informed the police after hearing her cries for help and broke open the door to rescue her. The SHO of the Sector 26 police station, inspector Shri Parkash, said it would record her parents’ statements before taking action and would probe the matter from all possible angles. |

Two killed in accident
Mohali, October 11 The investigating officer in the case, Nikka Ram, said the victim had come to Dehlpur village in connection with a marriage in the family of his sister’s in-laws. Last night he was returning from Chandigarh in a Tata Indica, along with Gurdeep, Gurtej, Amandeep and Dharminder, when the car collided head-on with a PRTC bus. The car was badly damaged in the accident. One of the car occupants, Amandeep, had died on the spot. |

Team’s coach Manjeet Kaur lauded the team for their good showing in the national event. “We were grouped with Pepsu, Manipur and Rajasthan. We beat Pepsu 8-0, while thrashed Manipur 7-0. Against Rajasthan, we registered 14-0 victory. We also beat formidable Jharkhand 2-1 whereas in semifinal, we snuffed out the challenge of Punjab 4-3,” said the coach.
