The vocabulary of any language displays a unique feature when the total number of words is counted. At any given time, the most commonly used words are ‘form words’ like as, not, so and also. These are also called empty words because they act as the glue that holds the main meaning — carrying ‘content words’ such as compare, people, meaning and function. The language user, who has a vast vocabulary, will be the one who knows more content words and more polysyllabic words. It has been seen that the first 1500 words would be accessible to most users but as the number increases, the complexity of words also increases.

Intriguing words

‘Rapport’ is a noun that refers to ‘a close and harmonious relationship in which the people or groups concerned understand each other and communicate well’. This word has been borrowed from French where it exists as ‘rapporter’ meaning ‘to bring back’. The food fad word of today, ‘tofu’ is also a borrowing from the Chinese word ‘doufu’, made up of ‘dou’ meaning ‘beans’ and ‘fu’ meaning ‘rot’. Since tofu is curdled soy milk, this does make sense.
