Thousands throng Kali Mata temple
Kalka, October 8 He said a team of doctors had also been deployed. Keeping in view any emergency, an ambulance and fire brigade vehicle were parked outside the main gate of the temple. A police party had been deputed to ensure safety of devotees. Traffic police personnel had also been deputed for regulation of heavy traffic on the NH-22. For the comfort of the devotees, four bathrooms have been constructed in the temple premises. The officials of public relation department and of the UHBVN would also present in the temple for the next nine days to cope with any electricity problem, the tehsildar added. Meanwhile, historical Kali Mata temple on National Highway-22, Naina Devi temple, Kalka, and Durga Mata temple, Pinjore, were beautifully decorated to mark the occasion. On the first day of Navratra mela hundreds of devotees from Kalka, Pinjore, Panchkula, Chandigarh, Parwanoo, Solan and adjoining areas thronged Kali Mata temple to pay obeisance. Expressing their satisfaction over the arrangements, devotees said they had been regularly visiting Kali Mata temple since past couple of years, but had never seen such arrangements. |

6-month RI for ex-sarpanch
Ambala, October 8 According to the prosecution, a case was registered against the deputy sarpanch at the Mullana police station in July 2001. He had filed an application with the police that the work register, cash book, lease register, Chuhla tax register and cheque book of the gram panchayat had been misplaced somewhere. After two months, he deposited some of the records and a register in the office of the BDPO, which he had allegedly misplaced. Later, the revenue department conducted a raid at his residence, but no remaining record was found. It was presumed that he had destroyed the entire record, which caused a loss of Rs 82,783 to the panchayat. The judge observed in the order, "He was found guilty of embezzlement of public money and he has shattered the trust of the general public. A public worker and the public servant should maintain highest standards of probity and integrity to set an example of simplicity and selfless services." |

Centre, Punjab The High Court today issued notice of motion to the Central government and Punjab on a public interest litigation alleging that a large number of brick-kilns in various districts were extracting minor minerals without seeking environmental clearance. The petitioner was seeking directions to ensure that brick-kiln owners do not extract minor minerals without seeking clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, under the Environment Protection Act, 1986, which was mandatory before commencing any mining operation. Drafts to replace stamp papers Stamp papers are to be replaced by drafts, bankers’ cheques and pay orders, the state of Punjab told the High Court in response to a public interest litigation for abolishing fraud-prone “stamp paper system”. The affidavit was filed in by Punjab under secretary Hari Singh Sodhi on a petition filed by advocate HC Arora. In the affidavit, it was stated: “The department of Revenue, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management has after consultation with the field revenue officers, agreed in principle to receive the stamp duty through demand drafts, bankers’ cheques and pay orders. After due approval of the higher authorities and concurrence by the concerned Departments, this Department will introduce and implement this system also.” The affidavit added: “However, that would be done successfully only after receipt of comments of the High Court authorities in due course since major part of the collection of Court fees would be in the cases to be instituted/ adjudicated upon in the High Court and civil/criminal courts under it.” |

Shivam Thaman of Chaman Lal scalped two wickets giving away 30 runs. In another match, Delhi Public School of Pinjore beat St Solider’s, Sector 16, by one run. Riding on a 30 runs knock of Vansh, DPS posted 66 runs. Vaibhav of St Soldier’s bagged two for 20 for St Solider’s, who were dismissed for 65. Vaibhav contributed 31 runs for Solider’s. Friend’s club to face NPS in semis
Chandigarh, October 8 The Star Football Club defeated Coaching Centre-B 1-0. Abhishek Chopra scored the winning goal for Star club in the 65th minute of the match. Karan Sharma of Coaching Centre-B was shown the red card for playing a rough game. Abhishek Chopra of Star Football Club was adjudged the man of the match. In the first match of the day, NPS Club defeated Coaching Centre-A 1-0. Jatinder Rawat of NPS Club scored the match winner in the 11th minute. Vikas Gulia of NPS and Vishu of Coaching Centre-A was shown the red card in the 57th minute for rough play. Johney Chand of NPS Club was declared the man of the match. In the under-13 category, YPS lost to St Kabir by 3- 2 in sudden death. In the regulation time, the match remained 1-1 draw. Vikram Raj of YPS scored in the 13th minute for his team and Udai Maria of St Kabir equalised in the 22nd minute. Even after extra time of five minutes, each half remained goal less. Chandigarh score 642 runs against Punjab team
Mohali, October 8 Resuming at their overnight score of 295 for three nightmare for the of the Rest of Punjab, bowlers continued as Chandigarh batsmen scored a huge total of 642 runs in 177.5 overs at the draw of stumps today. Vishwas Bhalla and Gaurav Gupta took their fourth wicket partnership to 105 of 38 overs before Gaurav was bowled by Manpreet Gony with the total 320 for four. Wicket-keeper Simrat Bawa joined his skipper Bhalla and the two carried the total to 367 before skipper was snapped by wicket-keeper Gitansh Khera off the bowling of medium pacer Navdeep Singh for 139. The CCA batsmen were in complete command and neither the medium pacers nor the spinners made any impression on the rampaging batsman. Simrat, who was joined by Bipul Sharma took the total to 457 before Bipul was trapped in front by Karan Goel for a fluent half-century. Gaurav Gambhir, who came in next did not last long, as he was caught by wicket-keeper Gitansh off left arm spinner Lakshay Seth for three, reducing Chandigarh 460 for seven in 43.2 overs. Then Karanveer joined Simrat and stitched a blazing partnership of 155 off 29 overs before Karanveer was snapped by Gitansh off Navdeep for 75. Simrat was the last man out when he was snapped at point by Gony off Lakshay Seth. His innings of 158 off 284 balls was studded with 17 well struck boundaries to all parts of the ground, including a lofted straight field six.
