Parking ban in Ambala Cantt bazaars
Ambala, October 1 In his order, the Ambala SP has barred the parking of three-wheelers and four-wheelers in Rai Market, Sadar Bazaar, Sarafa Bazaar, Nicholson Road and Sabzi Mandi road. If the vehicle is found creating traffic hazard, it will be towed away, says the order. In such an event, the owner of the vehicle will bear the towing cost besides any other penalty, the SP adds. Encroachers rule the roost in the cantonment, as the local municipal corporation and the district administration have virtually turned a blind eye to the mess. This has caused traffic chaos in the town. The worst affected is the main Sadar Bazaar area. Shops and rehris have come up on both sides of the road, leading to traffic congestion. Any move to remove encroachment it is vehemently opposed by the lobby. It is difficult for pedestrians to cross the congested bazaar road in morning and evening hours, say sources. With no provision of parking in the main bazaar, the narrow and congested streets pose a big traffic challenge for residents. In the main Sadar Bazaar area, some banks have set up their own parking areas by putting up fence on service roads. Several shopkeepers have extended their shops in the absence of check either from the corporation or the administrative side. The problem has been compounded by haphazard parking of vehicles. Scores of vehicles remain parked on both sides of the Vijay Rattan Chowk-Sadar Bazaar road, the sources say. Three-wheelers and rickshaws can also be seen parked on both sides of the main road. Haphazard parking makes it difficult for people to cross the street, while some parked vehicles remain stuck due to the blockage of way. Every effort of the district administration to restore order has been nullified by the negative approach of residents. The district administration has finalised a plan to ease traffic flow, but it is to yet be implemented. |

Shifting of dairies hangs fire in Ambala
Ambala, October 1 Deputy Commissioner Sameer Pal Srow had a few months back ordered dairies in the city’s residential localities to halt their activities and shift to other areas in view of an imminent spread of epidemic diseases perceived by the administration. The directive said dairying activities in residential areas in Ambala were posing a major threat and hence needed to be shifted outside these areas to locations allotted to dairies outside the municipal limit. In 2004, the then Chief Minister, Om Prakash Chautala, also decided to shift all dairies under a special campaign to maintain sanitation in the city. According to sources, he also announced that all basic facilities would be provided to the dairies. The municipal corporation had at that time taken initiative to shift all the dairies to a faraway place. The place identified by the municipal corporation were Khatoli and Kanwli villages near here and a provision of Rs 1.48 crore had been made to construct the complex. The government also acquired a piece of land. But the move to shift the dairies fell flat as the dairy owners had opposed it. The Deputy Commissioner recently asked the executive officer, Ambala City, Sadar, and the secretary of the Naraingarh municipal committee to ensure all necessary arrangements to keep residential areas and nullahs clean in their jurisdiction. They were also told to take steps to shift the dairies out of residential areas after giving three months notice to their owners. Sources in the administration said there was no immediately proposal to shift out the dairies from the city limits due to a petition filed by a construction company whose land was adjacent to these villages. The court directed to consider ways and means in a planned and scientific manner keeping in mind the socio-economic and health issues involved therein. According to a survey, there were nearly 150 dairies in the city, which had to be shifted. |

First Test opens to empty stands
Mohali, October 1 Yesterday, the PCA officials had claimed that around 10,000 tickets had been sold for the match. However, today’s turnout belied their claim, as just around 1,000 spectators showed up for the match. All stands, barring students and general blocks, wore a deserted look. The stadium has a capacity of around 32,000 seats. “The fans may have bought tickets to see the match on the weekend. Had India been batting first, the scene may have been different today,” felt GS Walia, honorary joint secretary of the PCA. Some local schoolchildren who had come in a group said they were there to see star cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, Rahul Dravid and Ricky Ponting in action. “We are not interested in the Test match.
