Principal accused of using foul language
Kharar, September 6 “He does not spare female students also. We have been tolerating this behaviour since long,” alleged the students. The drama continued for more than two hours. Anticipating trouble, the college authorities sought the police help. The students submitted a complaint against the principal to SDM Kharar, Rajiv Kumar Gupta. At around 11.30 am, the principal apologised to the students in the presence of the college management. He said he had never abused any of the students. “I am just strict on the discipline front. Such strictness at times is mistaken as abuse. If students are hurt, I apologise,” he told the students. On the assurance from the college management and police, the students lifted the dharna. Ropar range to have ISO-certified police station
Ropar, September 6 Deo added that the police would be laced with technology in order to give it an edge in cracking cases and keeping a tab on crime. She added that the police meant to create a system of reporting wherein there was no need of common man to approach police stations. “We have started an e-mail system, wherein people can mail us their queries. Ropar, Mohali and Nawanshahr. Talking about the cases pending in Mohali and Nawanshahr that earlier fell in the jurisdiction of Patiala and Jalandhar respectively, Deo said, “People will not suffer due to new demarcations. Though we are yet to decide over such cases, emphasis will be on providing maximum comfort zone for complainants.” The traffic strategy is also being worked out at the range level to minimise bottlenecks and ensure safety of commuters on road. The community police resource center will also be strengthened to ensure public participation in policing.

Patiala, September 6 Dr Ajit Singh, convener, health care committee and other members, Prof Gagandeep Singh, Prof Inderbir Kaur and Prof Jatinder Kaur, informed that 325 teachers and students were examined and free medicines were also given. While sharing their views, doctors informed that environmental pollution, hypertension and consumption of fast food have adverse effects on skin. College principal, Dr Dharminder Singh Ubha said the objective of free skin check-up camp was to bring awareness about skin care among the students. |

Patiala, September 6 General secretary of the Indian Fencing Association, Arun Vij, said the camp would be held till September 27 after which the players attending the camp would take part in the Senior Commonwealth Championship to be held in Melbourne, Australia, from September 25 to October 5. No water to quench thirst
Bassi Pathana, September 6 The water supply is hit, as one of the water tubewells of the local municipal council has gone out of order and people having installed tullu pumps illegally has worsen the situation. Now situation has come to such an extent that residents are longing for a drop of drinking water to quench their thirst. Hundreds of residents, who were running from one end to another to get drinking water from hand pumps, alleged that the council had failed to provide basic civic amenities, particularly drinking water in scorching heat. Manoj Banda, general secretary, Hindu Organisation, alleged that the residents of Cheema Colony, Chaudhry Colony, Giljian Mohalla, Balmik Basti and other areas are not getting drinking water. Besides, there is no one to redress their grievances. He said executive officer of the municipal council visited occasionally, as he had been posted here in "C" class council from "A" class council, Mandi Gobindgarh. Hundreds of residents of slums and other weaker section areas made queue at hand pumps early morning to get a bucket of water. Kulbhushan Malhotra, president of the council, said the water-level at one of the water tubewells has gone down, so the water pump was not working. The council was supplying water to the town from other tubewell, but people having tullu pumps had affected the supply. He said estimate had been prepared to initiate repair work and it would take at least 15 days to improve the condition. |

Rs 8.25 lakh, jewellery recovered
Rajpura, September 6 Earlier, the police had recovered cash, jewellery, electronic gadgets and two SUV’s from the accused, Sukhbir Singh and Parveen Bala. The two had been withdrawing general provident fund of retired employees by forging signatures, identity cards and other related documents. Sukhbir Singh, a teacher handling charge of block resource person under the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA), and clerk Parveen Bala, both deployed in the education department, Rajpura, were interrogated and money was recovered from different places in Rajpura. The money recovered by the police from the accused has now increased to around Rs 60 lakh. Rajpura SHO Bikramjeet Singh Brar pointed out that the police was also probing the role of other officials of the education department. He did not rule out the possibility of more arrests. |

2 killed in road mishap
Ambala, September 6 When he was crossing near Mullana, a mini truck hit his motorcycle. Nisha died on the spot, while Jaspal and Saroj sustained serious injuries. They were rushed to the Civil Hospital, Ambala. The doctors referred them to the PGI, Chandigarh. Jaspal died on the way to the PGI. The truck driver managed to flee from the spot. Youths stab CTU driver
Kalka, September 6 The police said incident occurred on the National Highway-22 near Rattpur Colony of Pinjore on Sunday night, when the two youths, who were in Tata jeep started arguing with Jasbir Singh, driver of the CTU bus while over taking during a traffic jam in Pinjore. During the heating arguments, the two youths dragged the driver out of the bus, one of the youths stabbed the driver with kirpan and fled. The driver was taken to a local hospital, where his condition was said to be stable. The police has registered a case against the accused. |

Heritage ‘kothis’ of railway colony in deplorable condition
Kalka, September 6 Residents of the railway colony, including T-13,T-15, T-14 of the NG Railway Colony, on the condition of anonymity said that more than 75 per cent of the residential houses of the Narrow Gauge Railway Colony , Broad Gauge Railway Colony, including double storeys , railway colony adjacent to Kalka Railway Branch School , are in deplorable condition for past many years. These houses have leakage problem, whereas the roofs pose danger to those residing in it. The houses are not in a good condition and the windows and doors need immediate replacement. In many houses the old electricity wiring system pose a threat to human life. Although the residents have brought these problems to the notice of the IOW department many times, but to no avail. They added that the old kothies (heritage residential buildings), near NG Diesel Shed , Railway Gurdwara , Railway Workshop , Near old Running room , are more than 95 years old and are in deplorable condition too. These houses need immediate maintenance. They further alleged that these residential houses specially the single-room quarters have not been even white washed for the past couple of years. The children parks in these railway colonies are already in ruins. The link roads of these railway colonies have not been re-carpeted for a very long time now due to the apathy of the IOW department. |
Minor held for committing theft
Chandigarh, September 6 The police said the mother of the accused worked at the house where he committed the theft. Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Army Flats, Sector 44, reported to the police that the accused had stolen a laptop, a camera, a mobile phone, a gold ring, two wristwatches, artificial jewellery, two woollen suits and Rs 400 from his residence on August 26. Cop assaulted
Head constable Gurmail Singh filed a complaint with the police alleging that Dina Nath, a resident of Sector 47-D, assaulted him and caused obstruction in his official duty in Sector 47 where he had gone last night to attend a complaint. The police said the accused was drunk and a police team had gone there after getting information of public nuisance. The police arrested the accused after registering a case against him.

Prem Pal, a resident of Muradabad, UP, lodged a complaint against the driver of an unidentified truck alleging that the accused had knocked down his brother Vijay Pal with his vehicle near the Parade Ground on Saturday night. The victim was admitted to the PGI. A case has been registered.

Munish Sharma, a resident of Sector 21-B, lodged a complaint with the police alleging that his Mahindra Bolero (CH 04 L 1367) was stolen from his house on September 3. A case of theft has been registered. |

Forum to assist mothers-in-law
Chandigarh, September 6 Local chapter in charge Manjit Puri said the forum was launched on Sunday, aiming to create awareness about rights of mothers-in-law. The in charge said people not only from the tricity but also from Punjab and Haryana, facing cases of dowry harassment, had come forward to seek assistance. “Not just husbands but their elderly mothers and other family members also suffer on account of false cases registered under 498A of the IPC. The misuse of law has just become another way of making money for the police and lawyers,” said Puri. Chandigarh, September 6 VK Tandon, a retired colonel and a resident of Sector 18, told the TNS that the car driven by his daughter Vijayeta Tandon was sideswiped by another car (PB 29 D 8622) on September 3. The impact of the collision was so powerful that Vijayeta’s car overturned on the road. Both Vijayeta and her friend escaped with minor injuries. Tandon said the police had registered a case of rash and negligent driving against an unidentified driver but had not been able to trace him so far. Illegal liquor worth ` 4 lakh seized
Panchkula, September 6 On receiving a tip-off, police team led by ASI Deepak Kumar, in charge, Mouli police post, laid a naka and seized 500 cartons of liquor including 428 Patti Rasilla Santara, 72 Patti of Hawldar whisky of different brands from truck no HR-14G-0036, being taken to neighbouring states. The police registered a case against the two accused, who have been identified as Krishana Kumar, resident of Hamau Pur village in Rohtak, and Sunil Kumar, resident of Naya Bansh, Sonepat district, diver and co-driver, respectively. Both the accused were produced before Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner for penalty. Meanwhile, CIA team of the Sector 5 police station lead by SI Khajan Singh raided Sumit Dhaba, Chandi Mandir, and recovered 24 bottles of country-made liquor and 10 bottles of Beer. 2 land in soup for holding couple to ransom
Chandigarh, September 6 The “babas”, who began by seeking alms for wishing them good luck, soon threatened them ill luck if they did not give money. As luck would have it, two boys in the vicinity dropped by claiming that the two had troubled them a little earlier too. On receiving information, a police team reached the scene and thrashed the two. The two returned the money and the police let them off after a warning, as the couple refused to press charges. On being confronted by the Tribune team, the two - Akash and Mukesh - hailing from Sonepat district, Haryana, maintained that they had not been duping people. Rather, they had just been praying for them, they asserted. They said they had come to the city to pay obeisance at the Mansa Devi Temple. They appeared to be in their mid-twenties. Regular visitors to the Rose Garden said snake charmers and mendicants frequently targeted couples, “disturbing” their privacy. Exploiting the vulnerability of couples, they often created a scene and held them to ransom. The couples, on the other hand, preferred to part with money to avoid any undue attention. The boy refused to lodge a complaint saying he just wanted his money back. He gave a declaration that he did not want any action against the two.Interestingly, a bag carried by the two contained a pair of jeans and a ladies suit, often used by snake charmers for diverse roles. The police has confirmed receiving similar calls in the past. |

Chandigarh, September 6 With the win, Mohun Bagan logged seven points and ousted New Public School, Sector 18, from the fray. NPS had six points from three matches. From Group B, Mahilpur Football Academy had qualified for semifinal, as they emerged group champions with nine points. On the other hand, Indian Football Academy (IFA) of Kolkata brightened their chances to qualify for semifinal from Group D after beating Dalbir Football Academy, Patiala, by 4-0 in their third league match. Earlier, Sambalpur academy took lead through Suresh Kujur in the 68th minute after the first half went barren. Kujur headed a cross from the left flank to get lead for his team. But the spirited Mohun Bagan took just two minutes to produce equaliser through Anubarta Maity in the 70th minute. Maity again struck in the 77th minute to see his team moving in the semifinal round. City golfer leads in PGTI Feeder Tour
Chandigarh, September 6 The Aravalli Golf Club is a nine-hole repeat course with multiple tees for 18 holes. The stipulated round was reduced to 12 holes (six holes with multiple tees) on Tuesday due to heavy rain in the morning that resulted in water-logging on holes 1, 2 and 3. Roop Singh’s first round included three birdies. Manoj Kumar of Lucknow is in second place at two under 40. Faridabad’s Sushil Kumar is tied third, along with Raju James Joseph, SK Hasem and Prem Nath at one under 41. |
Golf camp for kids from Oct 19
Chandigarh, September 6 The coaching programme is in keeping with the club’s policy to take the game to the youngsters of the tricity. For a larger involvement of the kids, the camp has been thrown open to the wards of members and also non-members of the golf club. The young trainees will be taught the basics of the game like posture, stance, alignment, aim, grip, chipping, pitching, bunker shots, putting, safety etiquettes and rules of the game. The camp is being held strictly under the guidelines of the European Golf Teachers Federation, UK, and on completion of the course, the trainees will be issued EGTF certificates. To motivate the trainees, one golf crystal trophy will be given to the trainee performing the best on each day. Each trainee will also receive three-month complimentary subscription of the Golf Plus magazine and a comprehensive golf manual.
