Financier’s body found

Ambala, August 14
The body of a financier, Charnjit Budhiraja (50), a resident of Ambala Cantt, was recovered from a canal near Kurukshetra this afternoon.

He was missing from his house since August 10. The relatives of the deceased had lodged a complaint with the Ambala police three days ago.

The police informed the relatives of the deceased this morning. They recovered an id card from deceased’s pocket and got the address. — OC

Residents submit memo against chemical factory

Residents of Hebatpura village yesterday submitted a memorandum to SDM Dera Bassi against pollution norms being violated by chemical factory Nector life science and threatened to block national highway on August 22, if no action was taken.

Village sarpanch Dr Tarsem said they were harassed due to the pollution caused by the factory. Village residents had submitted a complaint with the Pollution Control Board on November 11, 2008, regarding the pollution norms being violated by the factory.

This issue was also raised with the concerned authorities several times, but nothing had been done so far, he added. He further said crops were continually being damaged due to the polluted water and ash from the electricity power plants of the factory was causing eye ailments.

The factory has been dumping the ash of electricity power plants in open affecting the nearby residents. Village residents alleged that polluted water was continually entering into their fields thereby damaging their crops. They said ground water of hand pumps in nearby areas was also getting affected.

Meanwhile, company general manager HP Singh said the company had a treatment plant to treat the chemical water and there was no problem of polluted water. Regarding the ash, he said the flood water ash had entered into their fields this year and caused the damage. He said it was not in their hand to control a natural calamity like flood. He promised if there was any problem, the company was ready to discuss it with village residents and solve the issue.

Doc goes missing

A government doctor, Dr Kulwinder Kaur, deployed at the Civil Hospital, has been missing since August 11. In her complaint to the Ropar police, Dr Kulwinder’s mother has stated that as per her daughter’s colleagues, she has not reported for work since August 11. According to her mother, she has been undergoing treatment for psychiatry disorder for past few years.

She called her colleagues on Thursday and informed that she was at Amritsar to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple. The police is investigating the case.

Minister’s effigy burnt

Ambala, August 14
The Midday Meal Workers’ Union burnt an effigy of education minister Geeta Bhukkal in front of the office of Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) today.

Later they also submitted a memorandum to the Superintendent of the ADC office, which was addressed to the Haryana Chief Minister.

The union in the memorandum demanded that the decision to hand over the work of the midday meal to some private organisations should be withdrawn and contracts given to some private parities in Kurukshetra, Faridabad and Gurgaon should also be cancelled.

The union said in the memorandum that the Haryana government should implement the salary package announced by the Union government for the midday meal workers. Union president Jasmiro Devi and secretary Raj Kumar said most of the schools had no proper arrangement for cooking and drinking water.

Brick-kiln owners threaten stir

The Brick-kiln Owners Association has decided not to sell bricks in Punjab from August 16 to 18 to protest for their demands. Chairman of the association KK Khanduja said they would start their protest from August 16 against the state and Central government.

He demanded to put an end to the misuse of bounded labourers. He said coal should be provided directly to the association by state industry department.

Centre and state governments haven’t called so far to consider their demands, he alleged. He warned if their demands were not met then they would sit on a dharna from September 1.

Rachit Pahwa defeated Abhishek Sharma in the sub-junior category of the 20th Chandigarh State Carrom Tournament being held at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, here today.

On the first day of the tournament, Rachit overcame Abhishek by an undefeatable margin of 21-00, 21-00.

Earlier, Harinder Sharma, IRS special secretary, Haryana government, and finance department, inaugurated the tournament.
