Rangoli Contest
Students showcase talent

The managing committee of Sant Harnam Singh Public School today organised a rangoli and English words quiz competitions on the school premises.Students from various schools participated in the competition.

Managing committee president Shalley Dhiman was the chief guest, whereas Bhupinder Singh Cheema, senior SAD (B) leader, presided over the function.

Addressing the gathering, Dhiman called upon the students to develop the spirit of competition. She said in the era of globalisation, only those would survive who have the quality and ability.

School principal Gurnam Singh read the annual report and highlighted the achievements of the school. The first three winners in both categories were given awards.

Power sub-stations hit hard by floods

Ambala, July 25
The North Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (NHVPN) has lost crores of rupees due to heavy rains in the district.Though the exact cost of loss is not known, the preliminary investigation revealed that flood water had severely affected 66 KVA power sub-stations at Sadhopur and Chaurmastpur, and Dhulkot main workshop and stores on the Ambala-Chandigarh road.

Besides, NHVPN had suffered loss over ` 50 lakh each in Ambala City and in Ambala Cantt, the sources said.

The incessant rain and breach in the Ghaggar and Tangri have flooded most of the Ambala and nearby areas. The downpour, followed by floods in Haryana that affected road and rail network, came as impediment to the industries also, the sources added. The machinery and equipments worth crores have been destroyed.

According to superintending engineer, a preliminary report of losses worth over ` 2 crore has been sent to the head office, but the exact loss is yet to be calculated. He said hundreds of new transformers and insulators were lying in stores at Dhulkot and Ambala Cantt stores which remained immersed in three to five feet water for four days and were reportedly damaged.

The sources in the Power Colony, near the NHVPN, said 10 acres of the Power Colony complex was also submerged in water, including 65 houses, control room and rest houses due to low-lying area.

He said the only Meter Testing Laboratory in the area has also been destroyed including all testing equipments and the work has come to stand still.

The colony resident’s nightmare would continue as it would take a months for authorities to recover the damages.

Medical camp for flood victims

Patiala, July 25
Keeping up its spree of organising free medical aid camps for the flood victims in villages around Patiala, Punjabi University on Friday organised its second camp at Bhagwanpura village.

The victims, suffering from various water-borne and other diseases in the wake of heavy floods, were distributed free medicines and other types of relief. While inaugurating the camp, Vice-Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh said the university would organise three more medical camps at Gheora, Dhanuri and Bibipur villages.

Flood victims from neighbouring villages, including Sassa, Sassi, Mangtan and Ram Nagar joined the camp on Friday. They were given first aid medicines and were diagnosed for any possible diseases in the health checkups, conducted with the help of Punjabi University’s health centre, NSS department and Neptune Life Sciences Institute, Zirakpur, the VC said. — TNS

Public property damaged

The police has booked four persons and nearly 30 unidentified under the charges of damaging public property. According to sources, residents of Pandwala village had allegedly attacked electricity grid, Mubaukpur, and damaged the transformer, jeep and gate of the grid. Village residents attacked the grid for not providing proper electricity supply during the night. The incident occurred at 11pm last night. SDO Mohinder Pal Singh said electricity supply was disrupted for some time because employees were working on the electricity line. 

He said village residents attacked the grid and damaged the transformer and also a jeep in the grid. Booked persons were identified as Jeet Singh, Mohinderpal Singh, Kala and Inderjeet Sharma all residents of Pandwala, along with this 30 other unidentified persons were also booked. Meanwhile, some residents alleged that due to long electricity cuts they were forced to take such a step.

Voters’ registration till Aug 14

The work of registration of voters for elections of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) in Haryana has been extended by a month.

During a press conference at Ambala Cantt, a youth Akali leader Harpal Singh Pali, appealed to the people of the area to register their names for the SGPC polls.

To see the poor response in the state from the Sikh community, he alongwith other senior leaders, including Jathedar Ranbir Singh Fauji, secretary general of Haryana Akali Dal appealed people to register themselves before August 14, as the deadline was extended by a month.

Pali said the declaration form can be obtained free of cost from patwaris and gurdwaras in rural and urban areas. Only the Keshadhari Sikh of more than 21 years of age would be eligible for preparation of electoral polls.

They criticised the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) group for misusing the funds of gurdwaras in Haryana. The money which was to be utilised for maintenance of Sikh shrines was being spent in Punjab, they added.

No education centre was set up for the welfare of the community in the state, 
they alleged.

They said though the government had extended the date, yet the members of the community were not availing the opportunity to get themselves registered.

Thieves decamp with cash, jewellery

Thieves decamped with cash and jewellery after breaking into a house in Sector 46 here, early this morning.The police said Vijay Pal Gupta, a retried government officer, reported that Rs 20,000, a gold ring, a nose pin and other articles were stolen from his residence. 

The theft was detected when he returned home from a satsang (a religious congregation) in Panchkula, around 6 am and found the lock of the main door broken. The entire house was ransacked.

Gupta told the police that he went to satsang around 4 am with his wife. The SHO of the Sector 34 police station, Inspector Udeypal Singh, said it appeared that the thieves had conducted reconnaissance of the house as they ransacked the entire house within two hours. He said the beat staff was on duty and a patrolling party was covering the area. However, a case of theft under Section 380 of the Indian Penal code has been registered.

Five booked for demanding BMW in dowry

The police booked a city-based immigration consultant and four members of his family, including parents, on dowry harassment charges. They were demanding a BMW car.

The police said Sweta, a resident of Sector 50, in her complaint alleged that her husband Abhimanyu, his father Parveen Kumar, mother Anchal, uncle Sunil Mukhi and aunt Pinki Mukhi, all residents of Sector 42, had been harassing her and demanded dowry from her parents. The police has registered a case of misappropriation and harassment under Section 406 and 498-A of the Indian Penal Code.

The victim, 28-year-old Shweta, who is working as a development business consultant told the police that she got married to Abhimanyu this January. She said her husband and in-laws, who demanded BMW car from her parents, physically and mentally harassed her.

Theft

Poonam Luthra, a resident of modern housing complex, Mani Majra, reported to the police alleging that her purse containing Rs 40,000 was stolen from the Neurology Department at the PGI on July 19. A case of theft has been registered.

Constable booked for embezzling funds

Mohali, July 25
A Punjab Police constable attached with the Government Railway Police (GRP) has been booked by the Mohali police for embezzling Rs 1.11 lakh from the account of Police Public School during his posting with the 4th Commando Battalion in 2005. SP, GRP Jalandhar, Savinder Singh, the complainant in the case said the constable had been assigned the duty to handle the account of Police Public School. After conducting audit of the school funds, the embezzlement was detected. A case under Section 409 of the IPC has been registered at the Phase 11 police station.

Gang of car thieves held

DERA BASSI: The Lalru police has arrested a gang of car thieves during a naka at Gholumajra village. The thieves were arrested, along with a stolen car. The thieves booked under Sections 379, 411 and 473 have been identified as Raju, Ashok Bansal, both residents of Nayagoan, and Gaurav, a resident of Milk Colony, Dhanas. They were sent to one-day police remand by the Dera Bassi court. The car recovered from the thieves was stolen from Sector 17, Chandigarh, a few days back. They were on their way to sell the car by changing the registration number.

DPACA Blue defeated DPACA Red on the second day of Blue Chilly Summer Cricket League being played at St Stephen’s School here today.DPACA Blue defeated the rivals by eight runs.

Batting first, DPACA Blue team was all out on 144 runs in 34.3 overs. For winners, Akash Rana scored 31 runs. Sukhraj and Talwinder Singh took three wickets each.

Chasing the target, both openers Lovejeet and Rahul Chabra build a 101-run partnership. Lovejeet (52) completed his half-century, whereas Rahul Chabra contributed 34 runs. Rest all of the batsmen failed to convert the effort of both the batsmen into victory. Rishu Chopra grabbed three wickets.

Lovejit Singh was declared man of the match.

DPACA Blue: 144 all out in 34.3 overs (Talwinderjit Singh 14, Himanshu Khattar 23, Sukhraj Singh 13, Akash Rana 31, Lovejit Singh 2 for 20, Rahul Chabra 2 for 24 and Rishu Chopra 3 for 31).

Haryana, Sikkim in semis

Haryana and Sikkim steered into the semifinal of the ninth Junior Football Nationals for Girls being held on the PEC grounds.Haryana registered third successive win in their final league match of the quarterfinal stage. In their last league match, Haryana trounced Puducherry 6-0.With this victory, Haryana eves have attained the top slot in Group A with nine points.

Notified Haryana striker Seema scored three goals. She drew the first blood in the third minute of the game. Preeti netted the second goal in the 11th minute. While Taruna scored the third goal before the water break whistle in the 39th minute.

In the second half, Seema again founded the net in the 47th and 59th minutes of the game. Taruna sealed the victory for Haryana in the 80th minute of the game.

In another clash of Group A, Sikkim defeated Uttar Pradesh in their last league match. With this victory the Far-East team finished runners-up from their group and qualified for the semifinal stage.

In their third match, Sikkim defeated Uttar Pradesh 4-0. Nima Lhamu Bhutia scored the first goal for the winners in the second minute of the game. Anita Rai doubled the lead before the breather in the 14th minute of the game.

During second half, Mongmit and Pabitra netted a goal each in the 60th and 79th minutes.

Tomorrow’s fixtures (q-finals, Group B): Maharashtra vs West Bengal. Orissa vs Manipur (4.30 pm).

Simranjeet pockets title

Simranjeet Kaur claimed the Women Chess Championship title at St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School here today.Simranjeet defeated Tarini Goyal and scored a total of 3.5 points in the final match of the tournament.Whereas, after scoring three points each, Arunima Goyal and Shweta finished second and third, respectively.

Tanya Kaushal secured the fourth position in the tournament. The final positions were decided on the basis of Bucholz Tie-Break System.

Winner Simranjeet Kaur, Arunima Goyal, Shweta, and Tanya Kaushal, all position holders, will represent city in the forthcoming National Chess Tournament to be held in Guwahati (Assam) from August-2010.

Pushpender Gusain distributed trophies and certificates.

Earlier, the winners defeated the hosts in their semifinal match 2-1, whereas the runners-up defeated Ryan International (Team-B) in the second semifinal of the tournament.
