Rs 7,000 cr marked as arrears
Ropar, July 18 Finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal said this while interacting with mediapersons here on Thursday. He was here to attend a function. He said Rs 5,000 crore had been marked for government employees and Rs 1,900 crore for pensioners. On relief for flood-hit farmers, the finance minister said under the climate relief fund (CRF), the Centre contributed 75 per cent, while the state contributed the rest. The Punjab government would award compensation for damage accordingly. He added that a total of Rs 30 crore had been released so far for providing help and relief to flood victims.

Deluge results in hike of vegetable prices
Ambala, July 18 With heavy rains lashing several parts of the country, the prices of vegetables have shot up in Ambala Cantonment. Sky-rocketing prices of vegetables and other essential commodities have compounded the miseries of people. The flood-like situation has hit the road and railway connectivity. As the vegetable supply from Himachal Pradesh has been cut off, the prices have gone through the roof. After rains, an extraordinary price hike has been witnessed. According to Jasmer Kaur, a resident of Dayal Bagh, the prices of tomato have
soared from Rs 20 per kg to Rs 50 per kg. “A person who earns Rs 100 per month cannot even think of buying such expensive vegetables,” she added. Market sources said the deluge had hit the connectivity, thus the supply could not reach the required destination. About 30 per cent of vegetables rotted before reaching the wholesale markets. The maximum increase was witnessed in tomato and pea prices.The prices of capsicum have soared to Rs 40 per kg, arbi-Rs 30 per kg, onion-Rs 15 per kg, mango (dussehri)-Rs 35, peach Rs 40 and banana-Rs 35. |

Low voltage irks villagers
Dera Bassi, July 18 Balbeer Singh, former sarpanch of Aganpur, Gurmeet Kaur, sarpanch of Bhagwasi, and Harichand, former sarpanch of Chaundheri, rued the low voltage and poor condition of electricity wires. They said coolers, televisions, fans and computers were not operational due to low voltage. A farmer of Tarark village, Mohinder Singh, and Gurpal Singh of Toganpur village said most of time they could not get their tubewell motors operational due to low voltage. They also complained of line faults that were causing the poor power supply in the area. Loose wires had become the reason for faults in Bhagwasi, Toganpur, Aganpur and Mukandpur villages. SDO RS Pathania admitted that there was a low voltage problem and asserted that unauthorised devices would be disconnected. |
Theft at Sector 8 house
Chandigarh, July 18 Sandhya said she was sleeping and after hearing some noise, she woke up. She was shocked to see two girls inside the house. The girls told Sandhya that they came looking for some maid. The girls, meanwhile, diverted the attention of Sandhya and succeeded in stealing the valuables and cash. After they left, Sandhya found a laptop, silver crockery, cash and some other valuables missing. She immediately rang up her husband and told him about the incident, who reported the incident to the police. A case has been registered in this regard. |

35-year old killed in mishap
Chandigarh, July 18 According to police sources, Velu, originally hailed from Tamil Nadu, was going towards the railway station on hi bicycle when the over-speeding multi-axle truck (HR 38 F 5090) hit him. Velu was taken to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The driver of the trailer fled away from the spot after the incident, leaving the vehicle behind. The police has registered a case against the driver in the Industrial Area police station after impounding the vehicle. |

Girl commits suicide
Chandigarh, July 18 She was alone at her house. She was the daughter of a head constable with the Chandigarh police. The matter came to light when a neighbour saw her body hanging from the ceiling fan around 6:30 pm. The police took her to the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, where she was declared brought dead.

Chandigarh, July 18 Punjab scored the first goal in the 68th minute, when Rajasthan player committed foul in the penalty area during the penetration by Punjab team in the opponent’s block. Rajvir Kaur converted the penalty kick into a goal to give lead to Punjab team. After taking the lead, Punjab team continued their possession over the ball. On the other hand, West Bengal and Tripura played a goalless draw and shared one point each in the same clusster match. Both teams have played two matches each and share equal four points each.The last league match would decide the fate of both the teams. In another match of Cluster VI, Chattisgarh defeated Delhi 3-0.
