To err is referee
Jaspal Bhatti

TO err is referee, to forgive spectators. Every soccer referee has an inbuilt system of judgement to make a certain number of mistakes during a match. It is up to the fans to grumble about them or forgive their mistakes.

A few days ago in an England-Germany match, a powerful shot by England player Frank Lampard hit the top goalpost, dropped down well inside the goalmouth and then rebounded out in the hands of the goalkeeper. The referee missed that goal. Many people argued later that it is about time that technology should be brought in to establish whether the decision was right or wrong.

But FIFA has always maintained that errors can be part of the game. I agree with them. In fact, we should show a yellow card to a referee, who doesn’t give a controversial decision in a span of 20 minutes. Controversies and misjudgements add spice to the game.

A soccer player got a head injury during a match. When he recovered, the doctor said, "I am afraid you won’t be able to play the game now as the injury has affected your eyesight, perception and judgment of the ball."

The player, who had always been quite optimistic about everything in his life, said, "Don’t worry, doc, I am a fit case to become a top-level referee."
