Minister’s Private Secy’s Suicide
Ambala, July 9 They have alleged that Harbans Lal had committed suicide by jumping into the canal, as a bank manager was harassing him on the behest of the minister. Harbans Lal was missing from his house since July 6. His bicycle and his shoes were recovered from a bank of the canal and a suicide note was also recovered from his house in which he had alleged that he was committing suicide as a bank manager was harassing him on the behest of the minister. The police had registered a case against the bank manager but the name of the minister was not included in the FIR. Later, his body was recovered from the canal in e Pundri village in Kurukshetra district. His body was taken to Rohtak, PGI, for post-mortem examination. The blockade was removed only when Ambala SP Shashank Anand reached the site and assured the villagers that action would be taken against the guilty persons. The police recorded a fresh statement of the brother of the deceased. The villagers are hopeful that the police will soon include the name of the minister in the FIR, as an accused. |

Factory worker electrocuted
Dera Bassi, July 9 According to information, Yashpal, son of Kali Ram, resident of Kurukshetra, Haryana, who was employed in Apaxo factory, Mubarkpur, was electrocuted after coming in contact with an electricity wire that had fallen on the ground in front of the factory gate. He was electrocuted when he was entering the factory gate. The body was handed over to the relatives after conducting post-mortem.

After suicide bid, brothers clash with neighbours
Chandigarh, July 9 Apprehending breach of peace, the police booked the two, their mother and sister along with their neighbours under preventive measures. The police station-36 SHO said they received information around 8 pm from the locality where the brothers — Sunil Kumar and Anil Kumar — live that they had again clashed with their neighbours. The police reached the scene and learnt that an argument, which later turned violent, broke out when Neelam Sharma, who lives in the same locality, went to the house of the two. The SHO said taking cognizance of the issue, a report regarding apprehension of breach of peace under Sections 107 and 150 of the Criminal Procedure Code was prepared against Sunil Kumar, Anil Kumar, their mother, sister, Neelam Sharma, and their ground floor neighbours Khush Nihal Singh and his wife Aarti Budhiraja. The police said the report would be produced before the SDM (south) for action. Earlier yesterday afternoon, the police had booked the brothers for attempting to commit suicide and under preventive measures. They were produced before the SDM (central) and were released on bail. |

Deepinder trips at summit
Chandigarh July 9 In the final match of the tournament, Gurinder overcame Deepinder in straight sets 6-1, 7-5. Deepinder, who was a strong contender for the cup, was spotted off- colour during the match. In the women’s category, Sharmada Balu of Karnataka lifted the women’s crown after defeating Natasha Palha of Goa 6-2, 6-3. The clash for the doubles title witnessed some tough competition. Manav Dhavan and Deepinder Singh Bains won the men’s doubles crown. The two defeated Delhi’s Shantanu Rajput and Kunal Anand 4-6, 7-5, 10-4 in the final match. Hardeepak Saran, director, Harvest campus, and Gurvarinder Sahota, tournament director awarded prizes to winners and runners-up of the tournament. The results (final): men’s singles: Gurinder Singh (Pb) (3) defeated Deepinder Singh Bains (Chd ) 6-1,7-5. Women’s singles: Sharmada Balu (Kar) defeated Natasha Palha (Goa) 6-2,6-3. Chandigarh, July 9 According to chief operating officer Gajendra Singh, the CLTA is organising the tournament for the eighth time this year. At least 157 players have confirmed their participation for the tournament. “For boys’ (under-12) 48 entries, boys’ (under-16) 85 entries, girls’ (under-12) eight entries and girls’ (under-16) 16 entries have been accepted,” he added. There will be no qualifying matches for girls’ (under-12) category. Wild card for the main draw have been given to: boys’ (under-12): Calvin Golmei, Sabrang Sandal, Willam Yip, Yash Yadav; boys’ (under-16): Vikas Berwal, Samrat Rana, Abhijeet Singh, Prabhsimran Bal; girls’ (under-16): Bhavya Wadhawan, Gayatri Kumriah, Priya Singh, Nimrat Walia. |
