11 trains cancelled, crop destroyed
Tribune News Service

Ambala, July 6
Thousands of houses suffered extensive damage as widespread heavy rain over the past 16 hours played havoc with private and public property, disrupting normal life in most parts of the Ambala district.

The conditions worsened in low-lying areas as water entered houses and shops in Durga Nagar, Palam Vihar, Ganesh Vihar, Janak Puri, Shanti Nagar and all link roads in the cantonment area. Water also entered pump houses, causing damage to motors of tubewells.

It was the first heavy rainfall of the season which took its toll on the transportation system in this area of the state. The torrential rain severely affected the Ambala-Delhi, Ambala-Chandigarh and Ambala-Rajpura sections of the Ambala railway division. Waterlogging on rail tracks affected the running of the trains on these tracks.

An official of the Northern Railway said 11 trains had been cancelled as the condition was not suitable to run the trains on the flooded tracks. The Ambala Cantt railway track was also flooded with rainwater.

“Due to heavy rain and flooding of Tangri and Markanda rivers in Ambala division, the running of trains was affected,” he added. Many passengers who came to the railway station to catch trains in the morning had to face problems due to torrential rain.

Thousands of passengers travelling on the Ambala-Chandigarh and Ambala-Delhi railway tracks were harassed, when a number of trains running on these tracks were stopped near Kurukshetra, Shahbad and Lalru due to excessive water on the railway lines.

The signals on the tracks from the Ambala railway station and the nearby stations failed leading to chaotic situation for thousands of passengers. There has been no movement of train traffic after 10 am, the official said. The extreme weather hampered the work, but the situation was being monitored closely to bring the line back up as soon as possible, the official added.

The most affected trains were Dadar Express, Kalka Shatabdi, Amritsar Shatabdi and Swaraj Express.

Residents in cantonment are worried as the continuing rain could cause more flooding in the area. Now, most of the residents of the area have sewage water in their houses, said Gurmail Singh, a resident of Shanti Nagar. Hundreds of families who were residing near Tangri moved to safer places.

Meanwhile, power failure since morning coupled with little water supply throughout the day added to the woes of the people. Power supply was not restored till the filing of this report. There is no alternative arrangement to supply drinking water in the city.

The rainwater also entered Anajmandi, where maize crop worth lakhs of rupees was destroyed.

A number of link roads, water supply schemes and the telephone lines were also affected in the district. Rajnish (38), a resident of Durga Nagar, died due to electrocution in his house.

Deputy Commissioner Sameer Pal Srow visited the affected areas and directed the officials of the department concerned to take immediate measures.

Our Correspondent

Dera Bassi, July 6
A nine-year-old girl Parveen of Lalru drowned near the railway line today. Girl’s father Beera Singh said his daughter and son Raju were returning home from the old bus stand side when they slipped into a stream following heavy rain. While Raju was saved by passersby, the girl was swept away. Her body has not been found yet.

Besides, the family of Balram, a resident of Raiwali, suspected that he was drowned in a choe at Jaula Kalan and Baltana while crossing it yesterday. Balram, who worked at Agro Dutch Factory, went missing after work yesterday.

Meanwhile, Rajinder Sharma of Tasimbly village died in roof collapse. Dharampal, also of the same village, was injured as the roof of his house also collapsed.

Flood-like situation prevailed in villages surrounding Lalru following heavy rain and breach in the bundh on the Tangri rivulet, near Handesra, at Jodhpur village today.

The bundh developed a 40-foot breach and water flooded into nearby villages and fields.

Besides, waterlogging caused traffic jam on the Ambala-Chandigarh national highway at Jharmari barrier. Traffic had to be diverted from Zirakpur via Banur and from Ambala via Sambhu.

Due to the breach, Jodhpur, Rajapur, Khelan, Malan, Antala and other nearby villages were inundated. Rainwater entered houses and damaged crops.

SDM Puneet Goyal, after visiting affected villages along with other officials, said the flooding had been caused due to breach in the bundh.

Villagers had been alerted through public address system, he added.

Affected villagers demanded proper arrangements to control floods.

Also, a seasonal choe near Jharmari caused flooding in Jharmari, Kurli, Jarout, Batouli, Saddopur and Kakru villages. It also led to traffic jam near the Jharmari tax barrier.

The tax inspector at the information collection centre said some documents pertaining to tax records were damaged due to the inundation.

Jharmari resident Bhadur Singh said waterlogging at the national highway was the result of lack of proper drainage system.

Heavy rain also flooded the Dera Bassi bus stand, and Alpha Drug and Panacea Biotech factories at Lalru.

Jeev looks to swing out of rusty patch
Donald Banerjee

Chandigarh, July 6
Jeev Milkha Singh is struggling to get back into form. The seven week layoff because of the shoulder injury saw him struggling on the European Tour, as he missed the cuts in the Colonial, The Memorial and then the St Jude Classic.

However, the golf icon from Chandigarh showed improvement with every tournament. He showed glimpses of his form in the BMW International Open at Munich, finishing tied 11th.

And to top it all, he came in with a superb seven under par round of 65 on the final day. It was a grand display by Jeev who was six under in the front nine.

This stellar show on the last day lifted Jeev well up the leaderboard and he finished on 13 under par, five strokes behind David Horsey who won the title at 18 under par.

Jeev again made the cut at the Alstom Open de France at where he finished tied 16th coming back with three under par 68 scores on the last two days after playing rounds of 70 and 73 on the first two days.

He now travels to Scotland to play in the Barclays Scottish Open at the stunning Loch Lomond golf course, which begins on Thursday.

Jeev will have to get back in top shape and concentrate on the US PGA Tour if he wants to get back into the top-50 golf rankings.

Jeev said: “My ranking has dropped just below 100. So the first priority now would be to get back into the top-50. Secondly, it has played havoc with my schedule.”

Jeev says his shoulder is feeling much better. “I’d say it is 80 per cent better. I am using a machine that stimulates muscles and increases the blood supply to the injured area.”

Jeev’s aim of making it to the top-30 this year will require tremendous effort on his part for the second half of the season.

For this, he knows he will have to post some good results.

He added: “It seems I will have to play more in America. Yes, it’s going to be a long stay in the US. I am thinking of heading back to India for a week during the US Open, for which I failed to qualify. I need a bit of rest and be with my Harjai and Kudrat. I also need to spend a bit of time on my swing. Because of the shoulder injury, I am bringing a bit of hands into my swing.”
