Patiala, June 27
Students seeking admission to different colleges in the city made a beeline for the colleges after the sale of prospectus started.Students and parents are seen in colleges here to collect the prospectus forms for various city colleges despite hot weather.

With most of the colleges offering certain master’s courses and job-oriented graduation courses other than the routine gradation courses, the city colleges have become the top choice among students from nearby villages and cities.

Besides students, parents, too, see Patiala as one of the best options for higher studies now.

Those parents who feel their kids can’t adjust with the fast pace of Metros and are scared to send their kids far away due to multiple reasons feel that Patiala is one of the best choice available.

“The culture of the city suits our family values and there is certain decorum in the colleges, which is a must for college students,” added Kahn Singh from Mandor village, who was in the city to get a prospectus.

“With an increase in drug addiction among youth, I am not too sure sending my children in cities like Chandigarh and Delhi. I feel Patiala colleges are much higher on cultural values.

The kids here are more sincere and respect their teachers more than kids in Metros, added Bachhan Singh.

Bikramjeet Singh, a student, feels that he prefers Patiala because the city is economical. He said: “Staying and transport is cheap here. Even if you don’t get hostel in college, one can still afford to live outside whereas in cities like Chandigarh, Mumbai etc the room rent and food is very expensive.”

Ambala, June 27
BJP workers today held a protest march in Sadar Bazar, Ambala Cantt, in the wake of the rising prices of petroleum products.Talking to The Tribune, Anil Vij, local MLA and local BJP leader, said: “As a result of hike in the prices of petroleum products, the residents of Ambala will have an additional financial burden of Rs 95 lakh per day.”

He said the party had launched a drive in the state against the continuously rising prices of essential commodities sometime back, which has resulted in relief to people to some extent. He further said that the prices of all essential commodities would witness further increase as a result of increase in the prices of petroleum products for which the BJP would hold a state-wide agitation soon.

He said the government’s decision to increase the rate of quota wheat by Rs 2.43 per kg from July 1 would be another burden over the general public which is already squeezed under the pressure of rising prices.

He said the district had daily requirement of 95,000 litres of petrol and the consumers would have to spend nearly Rs 3.54 lakh extra every day due to recent price hike. He said the daily consumption of diesel was nearly 2.55-lakh litre in the district and the consumers would have to bear an additional amount worth Rs 5.10 lakh daily as a result of increase in the diesel prices.

Vij said the worst part was the increase in the LPG rates by Rs 35 per cylinder, which was going to affect nearly 2.4 lakh LPG consumers in Ambala district, putting an additional burden worth Rs 71.40 lakh on them.

He said rise in the prices of petroleum products would affect daily life of large number of families due to increase in fares and freights.

The prices of pulses had gone up by more than 34 per cent, milk prices had gone higher by over 21 per cent and the price of vegetables had jumped by 5 per cent to 15 per cent in the past one year, he added.

Babyal faces water, power shortage
Attar Singh
Tribune News Service

Ambala, June 27
“There is no water supply except in the early morning. As a result we have to face a lot of problems in carrying out household chores,” said Basant Singh, a resident of the area.

He said as the tubewell in the area was non-functional, the residents did not get water for more than two hours in a day. A non-operational tubewell has affected thousands of people in Babyal and adjoining areas.

The pressure of water is very low, even on ground floors, and noon supply was not being given at all. Overhead tanks have run dry over the past many days. Those living on the first floor and above are the worst sufferers. “There are two tubewells in our locality and both are non-functional,” said Baldev Singh, a resident of Sham Nagar.

Residents say they no longer feel that they are living in an important city of Haryana as life has become miserable for them. Besides, the residents also face problems of low voltage and frequent tripping apart from scheduled power cuts. Residents of Sham Nagar, Nasib Bagh and adjoining areas also complain of a similar problem.

Karnail Singh, another resident of the area, said despite repeated complaints to the authorities, the situation had not improved. The department had not taken any action, although assurances had been given by the officials concerned to streamline the water supply in the area.

Tubewells are rendered non-operational due to power cuts, leaving residents without water. The severity of problem has increased after the panchayat and zila parishad elections as now no one is bothered about the promises of promptly attending to the power snags.

“At times we have to operate our handpump for more than half-an-hour in order to get one bucket of water which is not even fit for drinking,” said an angry resident.

An official says a new tubewell is expected to become operational in a short period, which would supply water to the first and second-floor level of houses at normal pressure.

He says water level has fallen considerably. The motors of old tubewells, which have been supplying water earlier, are not able to cope with the demand as the pressure had fallen drastically, he adds.

Camp to select city football team
Deepankar Sharda

Chandigarh, June 27
A month-long camp to select the Chandigarh football team is underway at the Sector-17 Football Stadium for the forthcoming Santosh Trophy, which is scheduled to be held in Kolkata from July 15.

The probables for the camp were selected through a trial conducted by the Chandigarh Football Association on June 11.

The Chandigarh team is clubbed with Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tripura in the pre-quarterfinal stage of Santosh Trophy. Recently, the performance of U-19 team in the junior national for Dr BC Roy Trophy held in Kolkata made the senior team to work hard to make their entry possible in the quarterfinal stage of the tournament.

“The team is working hard to give their best in the tournament, our immediate aim is to qualify for the knockout stage,” said coach Harpreet Bedi, further adding that there was lack of opportunities for the senior-level players in the city. “These players will be regular here for a month, but once the trophy is over, very few of them will turn up for practice, as there would be no benefits for them,” stated Bedi.

On the other hand, there are many individuals in the Santosh Trophy camp, who earlier represented the city in various national and international tournaments and a few of them were also a part of the soccer clubs in Delhi and West Bengal.
