Travelling alone might be fun but it comes with its own set of problems. The first and foremost among them is the lack of security. As per the common male mindset, especially in India, a single woman is seen to be available, and this can often pose to be a major security issue.

"However if you are confident and observe basic precautions, nothing happens at all," says Mandira Mitra. "Stay in good places and be observant about your surroundings and ignore comments — you will be safe; "she adds.

Capt Surojit Deepak Biswas, who has travelled extensively across the globe, says that in foreign locales it is quite easy to see women travelling alone. "I think it is the Indian mindset which often makes women believe that they cannot travel alone; regarding taking precautions this is essential for both men and women. While travelling, you need to take precautions and ensure that you are not mugged or stranded."

Nonetheless, people in the hospitality industry seem aware of providing special facilities for women travelling alone. Says Mohapatra, "At our end, while catering to women travellers, we make sure that at the hotel these single women are given rooms that are near other family rooms. We ensure that a table is reserved for them in the restaurant during peak hours. Moreover, a woman attendant, who constantly interacts at a personal level, even to the extent of`A0escorting`A0them for local shopping and sightseeing, is provided to them if they want it. A personal escort to help boarding at the railway station or airport is also provided." — R.B.
