Patiala, June 11 He added that one of top contenders, Manipur, were expected to make it to the venue after they were stuck in a landslide. He said the tug-of-war was slowly getting recognition in India. The new management committee of the Tug-of-War Federation of India headed by him with Hari Shankar Gupta, a youth leader of Delhi, and Madan Mohan, National Youth awardee, had taken upon itself the responsibility of organising national championship for men and women regularly. These would be held in different age groups like senior, junior, under-19, sub-junior, under-17 and open-for-all categories. These championships were initially limited to two weight categories. In each of the national championship fixtures, around 575 sportspersons drawn from all parts of the country participated. They had their original membership in clubs and then created provincial teams. |

Control room to deal with power problems
Ropar, June 11 He said in cases of power breakdown, consumers could lodge their complaints at 01881222259 and 9646698378. “If power is disrupted in rural areas for more than eight hours and in urban areas for more than 4 hours, the control room should be immediately informed,” he said. He added that in case of power cables breakdown, if there was no power in urban areas for more than six hours and in rural area for more than 12 hours, the control room should be intimated. Also if a faulty transformer was not changed within 24 hours, consumers could feel free to lodge their complaint at the control room, said the XEN. |

16-year-old killed in accident
Zirakpur, June 11 The incident took place when Ajmer Singh was on his way to Chamkaur Sahib from Dera Bassi on a scooter with his son. While they reached the flyover, a speeding truck hit the scooter from behind. They fell down on the road and sustained severe injuries. A passerby immediately informed the police and rushed the victims to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, where doctors declared Rajwinder Singh brought dead while his father was admitted for further treatment. They had gone to Dera Bassi to collect their money. The truck driver absconded from the spot along with his vehicle. A case has been registered against the truck driver for negligent in driving.
Eight booked for assault
Stopping labourers from answering nature’s call at his field landed a farmer and two others in hospital, as the labourers and a contactor thrashed them brutally at Peermuchhlla here today. The police has booked the contractor and seven unknown persons for the assault in which three persons received severe injuries. The injured have been identified as Kulwinder Singh, his father Balwant Singh and their servant Krishan Singh. The injured were admitted at the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi. In his complaint to the police, Kulwinder Singh said he was working in his field in the morning when he saw some labourers working in an under-construction building answering nature’s call in his field. He said when he objected to this, the labourers thrashed him. He further added that on hearing his cries, his father and servant came for his rescue, but they, too, were beaten up badly. Kulwinder alleged that the labourers took Rs 30,000 from his father’s pocket and fled from the spot. A case against contractor Pankaj Gupta and seven others has been registered. No arrest has been made so far.
Thieves decamp with jewellery, cash
Thieves decamped with jewellery and cash after breaking into a house at Green Enclave here on Thursday. The owner of the house, Gurpreet Singh, has accused the police of inaction. Gurpreet said he had gone to pay obeisance at Anandpur Sahib along with his family on Thursday. At around 5 pm, he got the information about the theft from his neighbour. When he returned, he found the lock of the main door broken. The thieves had ransacked the house. He claimed that five tola gold jewellery, 42 silver coins, Rs 7,000, a video camera and around 150 rare coins were missing. Gurpreet, a property dealer, alleged that when he went to the police station to file a complaint, the munshi misbehaved with him and made excuses while registering a DDR. |

A cyclist, Ram Parkash, a resident of Naya Gaon, was injured after being knocked down by an unidentified auto-rickshaw at Khuda Lahora on Wednesday. He was admitted to the PGI. A case of causing injuries due to rash and negligent driving has been registered against an unidentified auto-rickshaw driver at the Sector 11 police station.

Chandigarh, June 11 After winning the toss, Chandigarh elected to bat first and sent Ropar bowlers on a leather hunt. The opening pair of Jaskaran Singh and Manan Vohra put on 64 runs before Manan was castled by left-arm spinner Sukhjinder Singh for 25. Naveen joined Jaskaran to share a 111-run partnership for the second wicket, taking the score to 175. Naveen was stumped by Pyush Chopra off Sukhjinder for 32. Skipper Gurinder Singh came to join Jaskaran and the two launched an all-out attack on Ropar bowlers and stitched a 147-run partnership for the third wicket in 24.4 overs. The partnership was broken by Arjun who had Gurinder snapped by Gurpreet for 67 off 82 balls. Jaskaran, in the meantime, completed a punishing double century (211 off 229 balls) with the help of 21 boundaries and five sixes. He holed out to Mohit in the deep mid-on region in an attempt to hoist medium pacer Avneep Saini out of the ground. Jaskaran was the fourth man out at 348 in 77.3 overs. ITBP clinch the tie-breaker
Chandigarh, June 11 Shah Niwas of the ITBP scored the first goal for his team in the 11th minute through a penalty corner. However, the score was levelled as SGGS’s Ravi Kumar sounded the board in the 40th minute. The match ended 1-1 in the regulation period. Thereafter, tiebreaker rule was applied in which ITBP scored four goals against SGGS academy. In the second match, Rock Rovers defeated Wonderers Club 1-0. Gurjinder of Rock Rovers scored the only goal of the match in the 12th minute of the game. Thereafter, both teams tried in vain to score against their opponents. |
