No national recognition, yet UT patronage
Chandigarh, June 2 While PS Brar, state sports organiser, justifies its selection as a recreational option for the differently abled, he fails to give the number of students to have opted for it so far. In an effort to promote the game, the authorities concerned have provided a room at the Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, in which at least four tables have been set up for the discipline. “There was a proposal during SK Setia’s tenure to promote the game in a big way by setting up table soccer centres at around six more schools, besides holding regular inter-school tournaments. After his exit, all plans were shelved,” says a department official. So while the game continues to enjoy its association with the education department, sports officials have not cared to review its worth. After Setia’s exit, government schools have neither constituted official teams, nor included the discipline in the National School Games, held in UT every year. On the game not having recognition from the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) or the Indian Olympics Association (IOA) he says, “We will moot a proposal to get it recognised in the upcoming meeting of the SGFI.” Though the Table Soccer Association claims to be a regular participant in various tournaments in India and abroad, it has failed to find a following among government schools so far. Chandigarh Table Soccer Association president Ravinder Talwar says that the game has been gaining popularity in the city. “Several centres are being run by the association at private schools here. Our association has been affiliated to the International Table Soccer Association. Any association can apply for recognition to the IOA three years after coming into being. This is our third year and we are going to apply for recognition,” he says. |
