Kalka, Pinjore reel under water crisis
Kalka, May 24 The residents of various wards in Pinjore told the Tribune that maximum area of the town was deprived of water in the scorching heat. They said that the worst hit areas were Shiv Colony, Rattpur Colony, Abdullapur, Model Town, Bhima Devi Colony, Vishawkarma Colony and Bitna Colony. They further said that the water level of the natural water sources like wells in Pinjore had gone down , which had led to acute-water shortage in the area. They also alleged that the water from the five tubewells situated on the Bitna road was also being sold, which was the main reason behind the low water-level of natural wells in Shiv Colony, Bintna Colony, Vishawkarma Colony, Chauna Chowk, Gurdwara Road . Meanwhile, the lower zone of old Pinjore was also facing the low-water level problem in the natural resources. The residents have urged the local administration to take a serious note of the problem. On the other hand, the residents of several areas in Kalka are also in the same boat. The most affected area is Kurari Mohalla. Great resentment prevails among the residents here over the negligent attitude of the public health department for not making arrangements for a regular water supply. The residents have also threatened to stage dharna, in case of irregular water supply. |

1 killed, another injured in road mishap
Dera Bassi, May 24 According to police sources, woman who was driving the Honda car fled from the spot immediately after the accident. The deceased has been identified as Akhil Sahni, a resident of Rajinder Nagar, New Delhi, and injured has been identified as Samita, wife of the deceased. She was admitted to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi. The police had registered a case against the unidentified woman under Sections 279, 337, 427 and 304 of the IPC. |

39 panther skins seized
Kalka, May, 24 RK Sharma , Divisional Wild Life Officer, told the Tribune that one of the wildlife guard received a call from a local resident of the same village that some of the migrants were drying the skins in the sun. A team of Wildlife And Forest Department headed by Inspector Jai Veer rushed to the spot and seized the skins. The accused tried to manhandle the team. The Inspector of the team immediately informed the local police. With the intervention of the police, the skins were recovered, said Sharma. The police nabbed two of the accused and while 6 others fled from the spot. A case under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, has been registered against all the accused, who hail from Karnataka . Sharma further told the Tribune that all 39 skins would be sent to the Laboratory of Forest Research Institute at Dehradun for confirmation of authenticity of all the skins. Accused Surjan and Vairmaila told the Tribune that the skins were pirated and were of bulls, cows and calves. They use to purchase skins from Jalandhar, Punjab, and by using chemical and paints they changed these skins into panther skin and sold them. |

BJP condemns attack on former district chief
Bassi Pathana, May 24 Rajesh Kumar Jindal, son of Lal Chand Jindal, former district president, had an altercation with his neighbour Devi Dayal Parasher, president, Brahmin Sabha, Punjab, over the issue of erecting tents on the street. After heated arguments they had a scuffle and in the melee Rajesh got injured and was admitted to civil hospital. The district unit of BJP immediately called a meeting and boycotted the function being organised by Devi Dyal. The police had registered a case against Devi Dyal and his two sons Balram and Dishant. No arrest has been made. |

Food inspector acquitted
Ropar, May 24 On October 27, 2004, the Mohali vigilance bureau had arrested Amrik Singh, posted as inspector with the Punjab Agro Food Grain Corporation, at Bareta in Mansa in connection with corruption charges. He was arrested on the complaint of a rice sheller, Surinder Kumar, who alleged that he had asked for Rs 10,000 as bribe from him. The court acquitted Amrik Singh of all charges citing lack of evidence. |

DMW club beat NICS by 1 run
Patiala, May 24 Winning the toss and electing to bat first, DMW mustered a total of 176 in 34.2 overs. Tanish Gill (63) and Nikhil Mahajan (58) were the top scorers for DMW. NICS boys started their innings on a sound note with Mandeep hammering 80 runs with the help of nine boundaries. He was well supported by Mayank (25) and Gagan (24), but other batsmen could not chase the target and missed it by just one run. In another match, which concluded at the Black Elephant Cricket ground, APJSS, Kharar, defeated Cantt XI, Patiala, by nine wickets. The Cantt XI, Patiala, won the toss and elected to bat first. The Cantt XI scored 167 for nine in 35 overs. APJSS achieved the target in just 18.1 overs after losing one wicket of Sahil (33), who opened the inning with Arpit. SI sent to judicial custody
Chandigarh, May 24 He had alleged that Nirmal had been demanding Rs 5,000 from him for dropping his name in the chargesheet in a case registered against him. Nirmal was caught at the police station where he had called the complainant to give him the money. Nirmal had registered a case of assault and trespass on a complaint lodged by Rajinder Kaur of Sector 44 against Jasbir Singh, Jagga Singh and Subash Kumar on May 18. Rajinder Kaur had a dispute with her brother and cousin over a house in which she was living. Subash Kumar was arrested and later released on bail. Nirmal Singh had allegedly told him that he would “dilute” the case and sought Rs 5,000 from him. The owner of the house, Sant Vinod Singh, had bequeathed it to Rajinder Kaur, Jasbir Singh and Jagga Singh. Jasvir Singh and Jagga Singh allegedly made a power of attorney in the name of Subash Kumar, triggering a dispute. A civil suit had been lodged in a local court. Subash Kumar had gone there on May 18 and an altercation followed. |

Escape of Convict
Chandigarh, May 24 A convict, serving sentence in Burail jail for dacoity and also facing murder and theft trials, had escaped from the police. The convict, Amit, alias Bengali, a resident of Kajheri, was taken to the PGI for treatment. The convict went to toilet and did not come out for a long time. When the cops went downstairs, they saw a small window at the rear of the toilet was open. The convict had climbed down a pipe and escaped. While passing the verdict Additional District and Sessions Judge GC Garg observed: “It cannot be said that Janender and Jai were negligent in performing their duties. The accused, Amit, escaped from the toilet and nobody could think that the convict would escape this way. Benefit of doubt goes to the accused. The impugned judgment and order of sentence against the appellants is set aside and both the applicants are acquitted of the case.” |

Daughter shot at by father
Panchkula, May 24 The ITBP officials immediately rushed the victim to General Hospital, Sector 6, here, in an unconscious condition. However, the doctors refereed her to PGI, Chandigarh, after giving her first aid. A case under Section 307 of the IPC has been registered against Ram Niwas at the Chandimandir police station on the complaint of an Assistant Commandant. SHO Janghsher Singh said that during investigations the accused told the police that his daughter was injured as his service revolver went off accidentally during cleaning. Singh said that the victim was still unconscious and would record her statement after she regained consciousness. |

Newspaper hawker attacked
Panchkula, May 24 The injured, who has been identified as Gautam (24), a resident of Sector 33-B Chandigarh, said he was on his way to distribute newspapers on his Honda Activa scooter at 5.30 am when a few car borne persons attacked him in Industrial area. He received injuries on his hand, back and head. The police said they had recorded the statement of Gautam and had started the investigation. Gautam told the police that his friend Praveen had some heated arguments with some youths a few days ago and had tried to settle the matter but to no avail. He said these youths who came in an Alto car attacked him with swords and baseball bats. He suspected that Rahul and Chahal, residents of Sector 20, and Khopa resident of Maheshpur who were involved in a brawl with his friends could be involved in the incident. |

Eight held for trespass
Chandigarh, May 24 The police said there was a dispute over the showroom and the matter was pending in a local court, which had ordered a status quo in this regard. The SHO of the Industrial Area Police Station Inspector Dilsher Singh said the owner of the showroom Col JS Kang lodged a complaint alleging that Narinder Singh of Sector 29, along with his brother Sukhwinder Singh and others, including Rajinder Sharma, Sanjay Chauhan, Jatinder Sharma, Pardip Tewari, Ranjit Singh and Daya Baksh broke open the locks and entered into the disputed property. The police reached and took both the parties to the police station where they again had an altercation. The police booked them under Sections 107 and 151 of the CrPC and booked Col Kang and Narinder’s mother Surjit Kaur under Sections 107 and 150 of the CrPC for creating ruckus. |

Panchkula, May 24 After winning the toss, Kamksha team put on a total of 141 runs in 28 overs, thanks to the clinical bowling by K Preet, who wrecked the innings claiming four wickets for 12 runs. While Devindra finished as the highest scorer with 37 off 46 balls, Rahul Jain contributed 27 runs. Nihal Rai chipped in 22. The other successful bowler for Rihalz Warriors was Resham, who took three for 45. In reply, Rihalz Warriors made 145 runs for two in 20.5 overs. Pardeep, who later declared the man of the match, played the key role in the win. During his unbeaten 91-run knock, he smashed 17 fours. He was well supported by Subham, who made 29 runs in 47 balls.
