Work on potable water system gets under way

Ropar, May 14
The work on providing drinking water to the entire population of Ropar town started today. MC president Amarjit Singh Satyal kicked off the work on the project during a ceremony at the main waterworks near Giani Zail Singh Nagar.

He said work on the Rs 10-crore project on laying pipes for drinking water facility had started.

Under the first phase, pipelines would be laid from the main waterworks to Preet Nagar. The pipeline would start from the main waterworks and pass via canal road, Ram Leela Ground, Lehrishah temple before ending at Preet Nagar. Under the second phase, pipeline would be laid from the main waterworks to college road and further Preet Nagar.

He added that in order to make Sirhind canal pollution-free and provide 24-hour potable water to people, the government had sanctioned Rs 55 crore, to which the MC would contribute Rs 6 crore.

Three treatment plants will come up in the city at Badi Haveli, Sadavart and Rasulpur and four water tanks will be built in areas of Zail Singh Nagar with the capacity of 4 lakh gallons. They include the Mata Rani area (50,000 gallons), Sukhrampur Tappariyan (50,000 gallons) and Sadavart (50,000 gallons).

EO Sukhwinder Singh Sidhu said out of Rs 6 crore for the water project, Rs 1 crore had been deposited with the state government and the rest of the amount would soon be given.

He added that main waterworks’ water cleansing procedure was slow and was being upgraded to make it faster.

Illegal construction razed in Pinjore

Kalka, May 14
Taking a serious note of illegal carving out of plots in unauthorised colonies in the lal dora of the agricultural land, the department of town and country planning razed illegal structures alongside the Pinjore-Nalagarh National Highway-21 A here today.

According to sources, a team of town and country planning headed by Panchkula DTPO, Kalka tehsildar and over 50 policemen demolished the under construction walls of plots being raised along the highway in an illegal colony being developed on 7.5 acre.

The sources added that the team also conducted a survey of illegal plots being carved out in illegal colonies along the Bitna road, Bitna and behind Pooja marriage palace of Pinjore.

After the declaration of notification regarding the formation of Panchkula municipal corporation, property dealers of Pinjore had been rapidly developing illegal colonies in the area.

The department intended to keep a check on such developers and property dealers, the sources added.

HUDA is proposed to set up 31 sectors in the Pinjore and Kalka area.

Haryana Board Class X Results
Sarabjit bags top spot in district

Ambala, May 14
Students of aided schools of the district secured first three positions in the matriculation examinations of the Haryana School Education Board. The aided schools also achieved maximum merits by securing more than 80 per cent marks in the district.

Sarabjit Singh, a student of Farooka Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Ambala Cantt, got first position in the district by securing 468 marks out of 500.

While Hunny, a student of SA Jain Senior Secondary School, Ambala City, secured the second spot in the district by securing 467 marks.

SD Senior Secondary School, Ambala Cantt, got 23 students in the merit list, while 132 got first position. Soib Ahmed got first and Karan Sood placed second.

Mohit Prabhakar and Abhisekh of DAV Senior Secondary School got first and second position by securing 410 and 403 marks, respectively.

In Hargolal Girls Senior Secondary School, Ambala Cantt, Kajal and Aanchal got first and second positions by securing 85 per cent and 84 per cent marks, respectively.

Kumari Vinita and Kumari Gayatri of Jain Girls Senior Secondary School got first and second position by securing 447 and 439 marks. Sewa Samiti Girls Senior Secondary School got 20 students in the merit list, while 49 students got the first position. Gitanjali Gupta and Monica got first and second position.

It is to be mentioned that the Haryana Education Board has not issued any merit list. The schools have been calculating their position at their own level.

Fire in mustard oil factory

Rajpura, May 14
A fire broke out in a mustard oil manufacturing factory here in the wee hours of today. The factory was badly damaged in the fire even as two fire tenders took over five hours to douse the blaze. Area residents said the two fire tenders had to make over 10 rounds to fetch water from the fire station.

The reason behind the fire could not be ascertained.

The factory owner alleged that the fire tenders arrived late at the scene and the fire could not be controlled in time.

Though no loss of life or injury was reported in the fire, the factory owner claimed that the loss ran into lakhs of rupees.

Man killed

Kurali, May 14
A 52-year-old man was crushed to death under a train here today. GRP SHO Sugreev Chand said Jarnail Singh, a resident of Chando village, Kharar, was crossing the railway line around 11.30 am when his foot got stuck in the tracks’ wedge. A speeding Shivalik Express, bound for Nangal from Saharanpur, ran over him. — TNS

Recognition to PU Institute
HC quashes NCTE order

Just over two months after the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) rejected an application for recognising Panjab University’s Institute of Educational Technology and Vocational Education, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today set aside the order.

The directions came on a petition filed by the varsity against the council. Seeking the quashing of the orders, the varsity contended the March 5 order was issued by the council vice-chairperson without considering the actual area available to students undertaking BA or BEd innovative course at the institute. Counsel for the petitioner Himmat Singh Shergill said the institute was part of the varsity. At the very onset of the hearing, counsel for the council said they may be permitted to reconsider the issue.

Taking on record the assertion, Justice Permod Kohli observed: “In view of the statement, the impugned order dated March 5, as also an earlier order dated September 30, 2009, are hereby set aside and the matter is remitted back to the competent authority to reconsider the entire issue. It is deemed appropriate that the university may file an additional representation to the respondents giving all the details of the pool areas available with it for the benefit of the students of the course in question and other related factors. It would also be appreciated if the respondents may provide an opportunity of hearing to a representative of the university.” “Let the fresh decision be taken within a period of three months. In the meantime, the petitioner shall be at liberty to proceed with the course and conduct the examination,” Justice Permod Kohli observed.

In the petition, Shergill contended that the varsity on May 23, 2007, applied for recognition of the Institute. On June 18, 2008, the council its regional committee and the varsity that the proposed programme had been accepted. But vide order dated September 30, 2009, the council regional director declined recognition on two counts, “firstly that there is deficiency regarding fixed deposit receipts of Rs 5 and secondly deficiency regarding land area with the petitioner”.

The council did not take into account additional area, including students’ centre, health centre, main library, area of at least one auditorium out of six, area of at least one boys’ and one girls’ hostel out of 15 fifteen boys’ and girl’ hostels. Both the requisite FDR and area details were handed over to the respondent council. Despite this, the impugned order was passed.

Cheque Bounce Case
BJP leader denied transit bail

Chief Judicial Magistrate JS Sidhu today denied transit bail to Purshotam Mahajan, former vice-president of the Chandigarh BJP unit, who was arrested by Ludhiana police in a cheque bounce case.

The police had arrested Mahajan from the city on the complaint of Dinesh, a Ludhiana-based dealer. Sources said the Ludhiana district courts had declared Mahajan a proclaimed offender in the case.

The complainant alleged that he had supplied jackets worth Rs 1 lakh to Mahajan, who runs a shop, Chandigarh Shoe Company, Sector 30, in 2006 but the cheques for Rs 13,000 issued by him were dishonoured in the bank.

Dinesh claimed that despite repeated requests, Mahajan did not pay the amount.

Three held for illegal mining

The local police has arrested three persons for illegal mining in the Tangri river near Bator village. The accused also tried to kill a policemen on duty by running their tractors over a police team. The police sources said after receiving a tip-off, a police team headed by head constable Lajja Ram raided the scene near the village.

The three accused were arrested from the scene. The police also recovered two tractor-trailers along with a motor cycle being used in illegal mining.

The three accused have been identified as Bittu, a resident of Bator village, Sonu, alias Sunil Kumar, and Satish Kumar, both residents of Jalloli village.

A case under Sections 379, 186, 332, 353, 307 and 34, IPC, and 21 of the Mining Act has been registered against them at the Chandi Mandir police station. The accused were produced in a local court today and were remanded in judicial custody.

Nishant steals march with six points

Nishant Arora emerged victorious in the boys section, while Ishita Gupta hogged limelight in the girls section of the U-15 category during the District Panchkula Open Chess Championship. The championship was organised by the Chess

Association, Panchkula, at St Teresa Convent School in Sector 25 here today.

Nishant Arora, a student of Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 15, finished with six points. He was closely followed by silver medallist Rahul Chadha, a student of DAV School, Sector 8, Panchkula, with 5.5 points.

While Ishita Gupta secured five points to emerge winner, Palak Arora of Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 15, finished as runner-up with four points.

In the U-11 boys category, Chandigarh players dominated the proceedings and won three points. Anubhav Tuknayat (6 points), Jashan Khurana (5 points) and Rishab Jain (4.5 points) secured the first, second and third positions, respectively.

Patiala muster 338 runs

Patiala managed to score 338 runs in 136.1 overs during the final of Punjab State Inter District Cricket Tournament for Seniors for Katoch Shield at the PCA Stadium here today.

Patiala, with its overnight score of 259 for 4, lost six wickets adding just 79 runs. In reply, Chandigarh team mustered 135 runs at the end of second day’s play.

Uniyal, who had claimed two wickets for 40 runs yesterday, proved wrecker-in-chief with snapping another four in just 13.1 overs. He conceded just 31 runs in the process. Patiala overnight unbeaten pair of Reetinder Singh Sodhi and Amitoze Singh could add 40 runs before going back to the pavilion. Amitoze Singh was caught by Gaurav Gambhir off right arm leg spinner Karanveer for 79, whereas Sodhi completed his ton (108) before becoming victim of Uniyal.

Himanshu Chawla could not stay for long and was bowled out by Karanveer.

Uniyal restricted the team’s total at 338 in 136.1 overs.

Amit Uniyal (6 for 71) and Karanveer Singh (3 for 81) shared the spoils for Chandigarh.

In reply, Chandigarh got off to a poor start, as it lost its opener Amit Prashar (6) with the team’s total at 30 in 8 overs. He was caught plumb by Reetinder Singh Sodhi. Then skipper Vishwas Bhalla joined Sarul Kanwar and the duo went on to stitch a partnership of 93 runs in 36 overs before Sarul Kanwar was castled by left arm spinner Amrinder for 75.

Bhalla was playing at 39, while the team was still trailing by 203 runs with eight wickets in hand. Tomorrow the match will resume at 7 am.

Ajay books berth in billiards final

Ajay Singla has entered the final of the billiards event of the 9th Saurabh Khattar Memorial Billiards and Snooker Championship by defeating KS Nalwa in the first semifinal match held here today.

Singla beat Nalwa by three frames to one in the best of five games. The first frame (102-66) was bagged by Ajay, while he lost the second frame (68-105).

However, Singla bagged the third and fourth frame (104-86, 101-52) to enter the final of the billiards event. In the pre-quarter snooker event, Vishal Gupta beat Rajesh Jain in five frames. Vishal lost the first frame to Rajesh (36-48), however, he retained the next three frames (89-32, 87-34 and 62-14) to enter the quarterfinals.

In the second match, Sandeep Duggal beat Vaibhav Anand by three frames to one to enter the quarterfinal match of the snooker event. Sandeep won the first two frames (77-31, 79-07). In the third frame, Vaibhav while playing excellent game bagged the third frame (40-78). However, Sandeep ended Anand challenge by taking the fourth frame (67-02).

In the first quarterfinal match, Aman Bhasin defeated Harkeerat Sethi by three frames to one. Aman lost the first set to Harkeerat Sethi (33-56), however, he retained the next three frames (62-29, 55-31, and 72-45).

In the second quarterfinal, Pradeep Kinger defeated Sandeep Kochhar by three frames to two. The first frame (63 -32) was won by Kinger, while the second frame was bagged by (20-68 and 52-67). However, Pradeep won the remaining two frames (39-30 and 61-38).

Double delight for Ankush

Top seed Ankush Arora of Punjab emerged champion in the U-14 singles and doubles events during The British Total Tennis AITA Talent Series Tournament, which concluded at Total Tennis Academy, The British School, Sector 70, here today.

Ankush defeated Tegbir Hara of Punjab 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. The first set went to Tegbir, but after that he lost his touch. He paid the price for his erratic play and lost the second set to Ankush 2-6. The win made Ankush more

confident. He started dominating the proceedings and won the third set 6-3.

In the doubles U-14 category final, Ankush Arora, along with his partner Rahul Seth, thrashed the duo of Parneet Deol and Anmol Rattan Kamboj 6-1, 6-1 to lift the trophy. Parmeet and Anmol couldn’t match the power and strategy of their superiors. The final match lasted for 45 minutes only.

The U-12 singles title went to Rohit Kumar of Haryana, who outplayed Sabrang Sandal of Chandigarh in one hour and 20 minutes 6-1, 6-4. After losing the first set, Subrang put up

some resistance in the second set. The score was 4-4, when Sabrang earned a break point, but failed to capitalise on the chance. Rohit took the advantage.

In the girls U-14 singles category, Karishma Mehta, a student of Carmel Convent, Chandigarh, beat Meenal Mehwal of Rajasthan, while Nimrat Walia had demolished Bani of Punjab in the girls U-12 final.

Tennis tournament begins today

Nitin Kirtne got a wild card entry into the AITA Rs 50,000 Tennis Tournament commencing tomorrow at Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association. The matches will be played at the CLTA and Lake Sports Complex.

Players to get wild card for the tournament include Nitin Kirtane (Maharashtra), Kunal Anand (New Delhi), Gurmohit Singh (Punjab), Manoj Sheoran (Haryana), Megha Sehrawat (New Delhi), Ikttesh Chahal (Chandigarh), Bhavika Wadhawan (Chandigarh) and Charvi Saxena (Chandigarh).

The first putting competition for journalists scheduled to tee off tomorrow at the Chandigarh Golf Range has been postponed because of lack of entries. Giving this information Chandigarh Golf Association General secretary CSR Reddy said fresh dates for the media putting contest would be announced after ensuring "some participation". — OC
