Work on potable water system gets under way
Ropar, May 14 He said work on the Rs 10-crore project on laying pipes for drinking water facility had started. Under the first phase, pipelines would be laid from the main waterworks to Preet Nagar. The pipeline would start from the main waterworks and pass via canal road, Ram Leela Ground, Lehrishah temple before ending at Preet Nagar. Under the second phase, pipeline would be laid from the main waterworks to college road and further Preet Nagar. He added that in order to make Sirhind canal pollution-free and provide 24-hour potable water to people, the government had sanctioned Rs 55 crore, to which the MC would contribute Rs 6 crore. Three treatment plants will come up in the city at Badi Haveli, Sadavart and Rasulpur and four water tanks will be built in areas of Zail Singh Nagar with the capacity of 4 lakh gallons. They include the Mata Rani area (50,000 gallons), Sukhrampur Tappariyan (50,000 gallons) and Sadavart (50,000 gallons). EO Sukhwinder Singh Sidhu said out of Rs 6 crore for the water project, Rs 1 crore had been deposited with the state government and the rest of the amount would soon be given. He added that main waterworks’ water cleansing procedure was slow and was being upgraded to make it faster. |

Illegal construction razed in Pinjore
Kalka, May 14 According to sources, a team of town and country planning headed by Panchkula DTPO, Kalka tehsildar and over 50 policemen demolished the under construction walls of plots being raised along the highway in an illegal colony being developed on 7.5 acre. The sources added that the team also conducted a survey of illegal plots being carved out in illegal colonies along the Bitna road, Bitna and behind Pooja marriage palace of Pinjore. After the declaration of notification regarding the formation of Panchkula municipal corporation, property dealers of Pinjore had been rapidly developing illegal colonies in the area. The department intended to keep a check on such developers and property dealers, the sources added. HUDA is proposed to set up 31 sectors in the Pinjore and Kalka area. |

Ambala, May 14 Sarabjit Singh, a student of Farooka Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Ambala Cantt, got first position in the district by securing 468 marks out of 500. While Hunny, a student of SA Jain Senior Secondary School, Ambala City, secured the second spot in the district by securing 467 marks. SD Senior Secondary School, Ambala Cantt, got 23 students in the merit list, while 132 got first position. Soib Ahmed got first and Karan Sood placed second. Mohit Prabhakar and Abhisekh of DAV Senior Secondary School got first and second position by securing 410 and 403 marks, respectively. In Hargolal Girls Senior Secondary School, Ambala Cantt, Kajal and Aanchal got first and second positions by securing 85 per cent and 84 per cent marks, respectively. Kumari Vinita and Kumari Gayatri of Jain Girls Senior Secondary School got first and second position by securing 447 and 439 marks. Sewa Samiti Girls Senior Secondary School got 20 students in the merit list, while 49 students got the first position. Gitanjali Gupta and Monica got first and second position. It is to be mentioned that the Haryana Education Board has not issued any merit list. The schools have been calculating their position at their own level. |

Fire in mustard oil factory
Rajpura, May 14 The reason behind the fire could not be ascertained. The factory owner alleged that the fire tenders arrived late at the scene and the fire could not be controlled in time. Though no loss of life or injury was reported in the fire, the factory owner claimed that the loss ran into lakhs of rupees. |

Mohali, May 14 Patiala, with its overnight score of 259 for 4, lost six wickets adding just 79 runs. In reply, Chandigarh team mustered 135 runs at the end of second day’s play. Uniyal, who had claimed two wickets for 40 runs yesterday, proved wrecker-in-chief with snapping another four in just 13.1 overs. He conceded just 31 runs in the process. Patiala overnight unbeaten pair of Reetinder Singh Sodhi and Amitoze Singh could add 40 runs before going back to the pavilion. Amitoze Singh was caught by Gaurav Gambhir off right arm leg spinner Karanveer for 79, whereas Sodhi completed his ton (108) before becoming victim of Uniyal. Himanshu Chawla could not stay for long and was bowled out by Karanveer. Uniyal restricted the team’s total at 338 in 136.1 overs. Amit Uniyal (6 for 71) and Karanveer Singh (3 for 81) shared the spoils for Chandigarh. In reply, Chandigarh got off to a poor start, as it lost its opener Amit Prashar (6) with the team’s total at 30 in 8 overs. He was caught plumb by Reetinder Singh Sodhi. Ajay books berth in billiards final
Chandigarh, May 14 Singla beat Nalwa by three frames to one in the best of five games. The first frame (102-66) was bagged by Ajay, while he lost the second frame (68-105). However, Singla bagged the third and fourth frame (104-86, 101-52) to enter the final of the billiards event. In the pre-quarter snooker event, Vishal Gupta beat Rajesh Jain in five frames. Vishal lost the first frame to Rajesh (36-48), however, he retained the next three frames (89-32, 87-34 and 62-14) to enter the quarterfinals. In the second match, Sandeep Duggal beat Vaibhav Anand by three frames to one to enter the quarterfinal match of the snooker event. Sandeep won the first two frames (77-31, 79-07). In the third frame, Vaibhav while playing excellent game bagged the third frame (40-78). However, Sandeep ended Anand challenge by taking the fourth frame (67-02). Double delight for Ankush
