No qualified gynaecologist at civil hospital
Attar Singh
Tribune News Service

Ambala, May 7
Providing better health facilities to the people does not appear to be on the agenda of the Chief Minister. The Ambala Cantt Civil Hospital is ailing with an acute shortage of medical staff. The 65-bedded hospital is devoid of even basic healthcare equipment.

The hospital authorities have been finding it difficult to take care of a large section of the ailing populace of the region due to acute shortage of staff. The hospital gets about 300 patients daily from Ambala and its surrounding areas.

It has a sanctioned strength of 11 doctors, but at present there are only six doctors available. Of these, two doctors are about to proceed on leave. These include Monika Jain, ENT surgeon, who is proceeding on child care leave (CCL) from May 24 and Ruchi Aggarwal, medical officer, who is going on maternity leave. Only one surgeon was available in the hospital, sources said.

Information collected by TNS revealed that four doctors who left recently include Ajay Chhabra -physician, Superna Grover - gynaecologist, Shailenderjit Kaur - psychiatrist and Rishi Raj -ENT.

According to official sources, there is no ultrasound facility in the hospital. Patients have to go to private clinics for ultrasound and other radiological tests since there is no radiologist in the hospital.

The condition is bad in the case of gynaecological department. Since there is no qualified gynaecologist available in the hospital, women patients coming to the hospital have to go back disappointed. Institutional deliveries have gone down and now there are only 20-22 deliveries in a month.

Talking to The Tribune, Kailash Chaudhary, senior medical officer and in charge of the Civil Hospital, said he had written to chief medical officer Narinder Chaudhry and director (health) Narveer Singh about the acute shortage of doctors in different departments of the hospital. He said the matter had also been brought to the notice of secretary (health) Navraj Sandhu.

He said the civil surgeon had made temporary arrangement for some staff only for day time. Notably, the hospital has a large number of patients coming from both the urban and rural areas. A large number of patients from the lower strata who cannot afford to visit private practitioners come to the Civil Hospital, but have to wait for long hours because of staff shortage.

Official sources said fed up with the kind of situation they were facing, the hospital authorities had made it clear to their superiors that it was not only difficult, but impossible to run a 65-bed hospital with that much staff.

Residents report eye ailments
Parmod Mehta

Dera Bassi, May 7
Lalru residents have been complaining about eye related ailments allegedly due to the ash from Nahar spinning factory here.

“The dangerous ash is affecting the eyes and residents living in nearby villages have been complaining about their clothes being spoiled because of the ash,” said Jasbir Singh of Lehli village.

According to sources, nahar spinning factory had set-up steam and power boiler units to produce electricity in which coal and rice husk was being used to produce power for industry.

The chimneys of these steam and power boiler units are causing the harmful ash.

Manager of Nahar fabrics Rainder Rohila, denied the charges of flowing of ash from factory chimneys. He said they had set-up ash controlling devices in the steam and power boilers units. Dr Babu Ram, member secretary Punjab Pollution Control Board said inspection would be conducted of the power units of the company and adequate steps would be taken to control the problem.

Check on over-speeding, drunken driving
HC issues notice to admn, IGP
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 7
Acting on a petition filed in public interest for directions to the traffic police to regularly conduct checking against over-speeding and drunken driving, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued a notice to the UT administration and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

The Bench, comprising Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal and Justice Jasbir Singh, issued the notice while hearing the PIL filed by local lawyer HC Arora.

The petitioner had alleged that despite fully knowing the fact that drunken driving was a major cause of accidents in Chandigarh, the UT traffic police had not been conducting a check regularly.

The police conducted a special drive against drunken driving on April 18 last year, in which 35 persons were challaned for drunken driving.

The petitioner said it showed the extent of drunken driving in the union territory. He also alleged that another major cause of accidents was reckless driving by youngsters.

As the city was inhabited by a large number of bureaucrats and powerful politicians, the UT traffic police apparently was wary of challaning youngsters for over-speeding. There was almost nil patrolling by the traffic police on internal roads of sectors, he added.

He also referred to the accident on April 30, when a car being driven by a young engineer rammed into a divider, leading to his instantaneous death. The case would come up for hearing on August 3.
