Need for cyber security stressed

Ankit Fadia, a 24-year-old cyber security expert and consultant, also known as ethical hacker, delivered a talk at the Rayat and Bahra Institute of Engineering and Biotechnology here, unravelling many cyber mysteries.

He held a session on ethical hacking, where he demystified the concept of ethical hacking and the need for awareness on issues related to cyber security. The seminar was organised in collaboration with Reliance World.

Fadia spoke about various techniques used by cyber criminals to hack computers and know the identity of users. He emphasised that Internet users must use precautionary measures for safe use and hiding identity.

He asked students to learn computer security techniques and tools of ethical hacking. He also spoke about the nefarious activities of cyber criminals and suggested some techniques to Internet users to keep themselves secure from such dangers.

College principal given farewell

The staff of Government College, Ambala Cantonment, organised a farewell party today for outgoing principal Dr SS Phulia.

Dr Gurdev Singh, acting principal, said the college had become a pioneering institute in higher education in Haryana.

He lauded the role of Dr Phulia in the all-round development of the college. Archna Pasi described Dr Phulia as a hero in academics. Dr Phulia thanked the staff members.

Thieves decamp with cash, jewellery

Chandigarh, May 5
Thieves decamped with cash and jewellery after breaking into two houses in the city.

RK Sharma, a resident of Sector 46, reported to the police that someone had stolen jewellery from his house yesterday.

In another incident, Rajinder Kora, a resident of Sector 41, filed a complaint with the police alleging that someone had stolen Rs 25,000 from his house yesterday.

Two separate cases of thefts have been registered.

Assaulted

Sameem Akhtar, a resident of Raipur Kalan village, lodged a complaint with the police alleging that Bhund, Banti, Dipper along with others, residents of Mauli Jagran, had assaulted him near level crossing on April 29. He was injured in the attack and was admitted to the Public Health Centre at Mani Majra.

A case has been registered at the Mani Majra Police Station.

Ohri, Sunny enable Mohali score 332

Fine knocks by Sumit Ohri (74) and Harpreet Sunny (65) enabled the Mohali team to accumulate 332 all out in 94.3 overs in their first innings against the Chandigarh team on the first day of the league match of Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournament for Seniors for Katoch Shield at Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, here, today.

Battig first, Mohali got off to a poor start as they lost their openers, Sunny Sohal and Ankit Pursharthy at 27 runs. The third-wicket stand of 49 runs between Sumit Ohri and Mayank Siddana provided little relief before Siddana was caught by Amit Uniyal off Karanvir for 30. Ohri was then involved in another notable partnerdhip of 63 runs with Gurkirat Mann for the fifth wicket.

Karanvir again struck with his disciplined bowling and broke the partnership, consuming the wicket of Mann, who chipped in 33 by the time. Ohri contributed 74 runs before holding out to Amit Uniyal off Gaurav Gambhir.

The team witnessed another notable partnership of 72 runs, which ensued between wicket keeper Harpreet Sunny and Jaskaran Singh (42) to reach the respectable total.

Off spinner Gaurav Gambhir was the pick of the bowlers with the impressive figure of 4 for 64 while Amit Uniyal and Karanvir claimed tow wickets each for 67 and 107 runs, respectively.

In another crucial last league match to decide the number one position in their pool, Patiala put up a healthy total of 394 for 7 in 95 overs against Jalandhar at Patiala here today.

Electing to bat first, Patiala witnessed a superb start with the superb 122-run partnership between Kunwar Raina (77) and Ravi Inder (38) put on a century partnership (122) for the first wicket.

The other notable innings were played by Amitoze Singh (59), Himanshu Chawla (49), Mohit Mohindra 48, Ankur Jund 44 n o and Ravi Inder (38) while skipper Pankaj Dharmani made 34 runs.

Gurkirat (2 for 82) and Rahul Sharma (2 for 135) were the main wicket takers for Jalandhar.

For Ludhiana, the wrecker-in-chief was left-arm spinner Ankur Kakkar, who scalped six wickets, conceding 101 runs.

In reply, Ludhiana were at 13 for 1 in 7 overs, when the first day’s play was over.

For Mansa, Pritpal Singh (38) and Manil Bajaj (33) were the main scorers, whereas, Lakshay Seth (4 for 45) and Guripal (2 for 13) were the main wicket takers for Amritsar.

In reply, Amritsar were at 220 for 3 in 47 overs at the end of the first day’s play. Sharad Lumba hit 113 runs in 98 balls to guide the team to strengthen its position in the match.

Hockey Tourney
Training Command crush Air HQ

Riding high on the hat trick by J Kujur and four goals by Harish, the Training Command (TC) team crushed the Air Headquarters (AHQ) team by 8-1 in the on going Air Force Inter-Command Hockey Tournament at the Air Force Hockey Stadium, 3BRD, here today.

In the fast-paced match, the TC team dominated the proceedings throughout the game. It was Harish, who started the damage to the rivals with his field goal in the 15th minute, but ace-forward Kujur virtually broke the backbone of the AHQ team with his back-to-back three goals in 16th, 18th and 19th minutes.

Harish struck three times more in 43rd, 51st and 68th minutes. Balbir, too, contributed his bit to increase the tally in the 52nd minute of the game.

Earlier, MK Kanujia of AHQ brought cheers to the teammates with his first goal of the game in the 13th minute, but later things went out of the hands of the AHQ.

In another match between South Western Air Command (SWC) and Central Air Command (CAC), the former team beat the latter by 4-2.

For SWAC, Sanwar Ali scored twice at 14th and 32nd minutes. The tally was increased by Saini (17th minute) and Brar (41st minute).

For CAC, the goals came through one penalty corner and one penalty stroke. The first goal was scored by Prabhakar, who converted the corner in the sixth minute.

The penalty score was earned in the end, which conversion helped to reduce the margin.

Rashid outshines with sizzling 65

Rashid Khan, the teenaged national amateur ace, showed his class as he fired eight birdies to fire a sizzling seven under 65 card to surge ahead on top of the leaderboard in the midway stage of the Samarvir Sahi Punjab Open Amateur Golf Championship at the Chandigarh Golf Club here today.

Rashid was in tremendous form as he set about sinking birdies on a warm day. He shot birdies on the first, fourth and fifth for a blemish-free three under 33 at the turn.

But a lot more was to come on the return nine. After bogeying the 10th, he birdied the 11th and followed it up with two back-to-back birdies on the 13, 14th, 16th and 18th to leave the pack far behind.

His nearest rival after two rounds is Aditya Bhandarkar, who played a two under par 70 to be one under par 143, is six strokes behind the Delhi golfer.

But there is a close race for the second spot with Gagan Verma and Rahul Bajaj just one more stroke behind Aditya Bhandarkar at 144.

Overnight leaders Akshay Sharma and Wasim Khan, who were three under 69 on the opening day, fell to joint eighth slot carding a score of 78.

The greens are playing was well demonstrated by Rashid Khan. And with two more days to go this ace amateur is set to consolidate his lead.

Toyota Junior Golf Championship
Sidharth fires hole-in-one

Twelve-year-old K Sidharth of the Eagleton Golf Course created a flutter on the Panchkula Golf Club greens when he shot a hole-in-one on the 230 yard par-3 fourth hole on the second day of the Toyota Tour Northern India Junior Golf Championship here today.

The category C participant from Coimbatore was ecstatic. He said:"I just hit the ball with all my strength and it just kept going and going. I could not believe my eyes when I saw it roll in. This is really something unbelievable".

Yashas Chandra of Mysore hit a one under 71 to make himself comfortable at tied first along with Rahul Ravi and Saeed Saqeeb Ahmed from Bangalore in Category A (16-18 years).

Yashas said: "I am happy with my performance today and hope to maintain the momentum tomorrow".

Arush Ahuja of Mumbai fired a card of 79 to extend his lead to three strokes in category B (14 -16 years).

Viraj Madappa of Kolkata and Kshitij Naveed Kaul continued to hold on to the lead in category C and D respectively.

AITA Meet
Vanshika, Harsimran enter top-four bracket

Vanshika Sawhney, Harsimran Kaur, Nikita and Shweta Sangwan entered the top-four bracket in the AITA talent series’ under 16 age group at the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association’s courts, Sector 10, here today.

While in the same age group, the players who have made it to the semifinals include Kamal Kishore Maderana, Pranav Suri, Dheeranush Singh Bhatti and Ranjeet Singh, all trainees at CLTA.

Earlier, in the girls (u-16) section’s quarterfinals, Nikita did not face any problem to beat Nandini Sharma, who gave up 0-6, 2-6. In a similar fashion, Shweta Sangwan shocked Nikita Bishnoi in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 while Vanshika Sawhney and wild card Harsmran upset Aashma Garg (6-1, 6-3) and Charvi Saxena (6-4, 6-3), respectively to move ahead.

In the boys’ section (u-16), Kamal Kishore ousted Nishat Eqbal 6-3, 6-2 while Pranav Suri got the better of Isahque Eqbal 7-5, 6-3. In other quarterfinal round matches, Dheeranush Singh Bhatti scored showed the doors to Uday Singh Mann 6-2, 6-3 whereas Ranjeet Singh drubbed Sumit Pal Singh 6-1, 6-2.

Tomorrow, top seed Kamal Kishore Maderana will face third seed Pranav Suri while Dheeranshu Bhatti will take on unseeded Ranjeet Singh.

St Solider begin on winning note

Chandigarh, May 5
The hosts, St Solider International School, Sector 28, started their campaign on a winning note, trailing St Anne’s School, Sector 32, by 4-0 in the Chandigarh Football Tournament Under-16 for Saint Soldier Trophy being played at the school’s ground here today.

The other winners in today’s matches were St Xavier's School, Sector 44, St Joseph's School, Sector 44, and Stepping Stone, Sector 37. In the match, between the host team and the St Anne’s team, the former team dominated the proceedings throughout the match and sealed 4-0 victory in the 48th minute.

The match between St Xavier's and Government Model High School teams was also another one-sided affair as the former team registered a win of 4-0 over the latter.

Other results:

St Joseph's School-44 beat Ryan International School, Sector 49, by 3-1. Scorers: Prabodh (Ryan) (16th min), Deskoyong (Joseph’s) (37th and 47th min), Reshab. St Anne’s outplay Banyan Tree

Jupinder (77) and Shivam (73) put up a good batting skills to enable the St Anne’s School, Sector 32, to register a thumping victory of 113 runs over Banyan Tree School in the Saupin’s Foundation Cup T-20 Inter -School Cricket Tournament (U-14), played at the BTS grounds, Sector 48, here, today.

Chasing a target of 253, the BTS team were bundled out on 140 runs in just 16.2 overs. Earlier, after winning the toss, St. Anne’s skipper elected to bat first. Apart from Shivam and Jupinder, Anshul played a superb unbeaten knock of 56 runs, consisting seven boundaries and two sixes. For BTS, Tarun scalped two for 33. In reply, Honey’s defiant knock of 86 runs went in vain as he could not get any support from other batsmen of his team. Udaiveer and Harjas took three wickets each.
