Non-teaching staff to intensify stir

Patiala, May 1
The non-teaching staff union of private-aided colleges of Punjab and Chandigarh has threatened to intensify their agitation in order to get their revised pay scales implemented.

Shamsher Singh, propaganda secretary of the state union, after discussing with representatives of various colleges, including Modi College, Patiala, Public College, Samana, Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib, and DAV College, Bathinda, said the government was discriminating between the teaching and non-teaching staff.

He accused the Punjab government of keeping in dark the non-teaching employees. He said despite promising the implementation of revised scales several times in Parliament session, the revised pay scales had not been implemented yet. — TNS

A major tragedy was averted after a fire broke out at the office of a petrol station of Bharat Petroleum on the GT road, near Ambala City, this morning.

As many as five petrol filling machines kept at the office, two computers and furniture were destroyed in the blaze.

A worker who was filling petrol in a vehicle noticed smoke coming out of the office first. He raised the alarm and other workers suspended the fuel supply to the pumps at the petrol station. Two fire-tenders fought for two hours to bring the fire under control.

According to a fire brigade official, the fire could have been bigger had it engulfed the filling area of the petrol station.

According to sources, the petrol station had a capacity to store 60,000 litre of petrol and diesel. Two petrol tankers were stationed at the petrol station when the fire broke out. The loss could not be ascertained so far. According to petrol station owner Manmohan Singh, the loss could run into lakhs of rupees. The cause of the fire could not be established but a short-circuit was suspected to be behind the fire.

In another incident, a generator kept on the roof of the building of a printing press caught fire at Ambala City this afternoon. Papers and other materials of the printing press kept on the roof were destroyed in the fire. Two fire-tenders controlled the fire after battling it for half an hour.

Rs 4 cr to be spent on bundh repair, says MLA

Around Rs 4 crore will be spent on repair of bundhs on the Ghaggar to control flooding in the Dera Bassi area.This was stated by MLA Jasjit Singh Bunny while talking to mediapersons at Bhagwasi village today.

The bundhs would be repaired at Chatt, Bakarpur and at Lalru villages as floods had been damaging crops and other properties of nearby villages.

He today visited Ballopur, Tophanpur, Chaundheri, Aganpur, Bhagwasi, Mukandpur and Dadrala and distributed grants worth Rs 15 lakh for development purposes.

He added that a grant of Rs 2.5 crore had been given to villages of the constituency during the past few days.

Also, Rs 10 crore had been approved for the repair and construction of roads in the constituency, he added.

He assured that another Rs 8 crore would be distributed for development works in villages of the constituency.

Chicago martyrs remembered

The district unit of the Punjab State Employees’ Union today observed May Day at their district headquarters to remember the martyrs of Chicago and those workers who were killed while performing their duty.

Addressing workers, union chairman Sucha Singh Raillo expressed concern over the rising inflation.

He said the government must control the ever-increasing price rise of commodities of daily use.

He said though government employees were retiring, no fresh recruitment had been done by the government in different government offices, which was also a matter of concern. This had burdened the employees who had to fill in for the retired staff.

Anti-diarrhoea drive kicks off

Ambala will soon be identified as a diarrhoea-free district, said Deputy Commissioner Samir Pal Saro after launching a campaign in this regard here today.

Addressing a meeting of around 900 anganwari workers, he said the anti-diarrhoea drive would be put into operation not only in the urban areas but in all villages of the district as well.

He said during the campaign, people would made aware of diarrhoea symptoms and the importance of drinking potable water.

He said he had directed the public health department to take special measures for providing potable water to the residents of the district.

He said he had directed all head of schools to drop chlorine tablets in water tanks regularly during the summer.

He added that the administration had also directed the health department to take samples of potable water regularly so that contamination of water could be checked.

Providing water testing kits to the anganwari workers, he asked them to persuade villagers to keep the water clean. In case of a diarrhoea case, the anganwari workers were asked to report the matter to the health authorities immediately.

He said workers who performed their duties diligently would be honoured at a public function.

Senior officers of the public health department, the municipal corporation and the district administration were also present.

Fake currency: Accused sent to 3-day police remand

A local court today sent two engineering students to three-day police remand for sustained interrogation of the detection of the original source of fake currency seized from them.

The operation cell of Chandigarh Police had arrested Amardeep and Pargatjot with fake currency notes worth Rs 20,000 from near Sector 42 lake on Friday night. Both the accused are BTech final year students and belong to Amritsar. They were living in Mohali as paying guests.

The suspects were nabbed when they tried to dodge the police team, which signalled them to stop. The police had recovered fake notes of Rs 50 and Rs 100 denominations during the search.

They will now appear in the court on May 4.

Charges framed against Whiskey, 6 others

Additional District and Sessions Judge GC Garg today framed charges against Davinder Singh alias Whiskey and six others in a murder case.

The police had filed a challan against them on March 6. Whiskey had allegedly killed a financier, Harjinder Singh Dhillon, on November 25, 2009. Ravinder Singh alias Ravi, Munish Kumar, Manpreet Singh alias Manu, Surinder Singh alias Manna, Amrik Singh and Kuldeep Singh had accompanied him at the time of the crime, the police had alleged.

According to the police, Dhillon had a Ford Fiesta car, which was reportedly in the name of Whiskey, and he wanted it back.

The accused were booked under Sections 302, 392 and 34 of the IPC along with Sections 25, 27, 57 and 59 of the Arms Act except for Kuldeep Singh, who had been booked under Section 302 read with 34 of the IPC. The police had arrested Whiskey on December 11, 2009. Acting on a tip-off, a special crime investigation cell team had nabbed the other suspects on December 7, 2009. During their interrogation, they had disclosed that on November 25, they and Whiskey hatched a conspiracy to take away the Ford Fiesta being used by Dhillon. They went to Sector 20. While Amrik remained outside, others went to Dhillon’s office where they had a scuffle.

2 held for illegal sand quarrying

The police booked two persons for manhandling forest staff and quarrying sand illegally from the forest here today. The accused have been identified as Gurmit Singh and Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Choti Karora village in Naya Gaon.

The police stated that the complaint, forest range officer Anil Kumar Sharma, alleged that he was on officially tour with staff at the village when he noticed the accused carrying sand in their tractor-trailer illegally.

When he enquired about it from them, they manhandled the staff and fled the scene.

The investigating officer stated that a case had been registered against the suspects and further investigations had been initiated.

Scrap dealer, guard held

Zirakpur: The local police arrested a scrap dealer and a security guard of Airtel Telecommunication godown at Pabhat for selling the record of customers of Airtel to a scrap dealer here today.

The accused have been identified as scrap dealer Vijay Chaursia, a resident of Bihar, and security guard Shakeel Khan, a resident of UP.

According to the police, ASI Charanjit Singh got information that the scrap dealer near the sales tax barrier had stolen the record of Airtel from 2003 to 2007 with the help of godown security guard.

On a tip-off, the police team raided and arrested the two along with the record.

The police official said they had written to Airtel officials about the matter. The two have been booked on the complaint of ASI Charanjit Singh, the official added.

Thief arrested

Zirakpur: Army men caught a youth red-handed while stealing sanitary goods from bathrooms of Army K-Area at Dhakoli here today.

The accused has been identified as Pradeep Kumar, a resident of Vikas Nagar, Chandigarh.

According to the police, Manish Deepkanj, 53 Engineer Regiment K-Area, stated that a few days ago the sanitary items were stolen from bathrooms.

On Saturday, he saw a youth stealing sanitary items from a bathroom. He raised the alarm and arrested the youth.

The police official stated that a case had been registered against the youth.

Billiards and Snooker Championship

Ankit has emerged winner in the sub-junior snooker event of the 26th Chandigarh Billiards and Snooker Championship being held at Sector 22-D, here todayAjay will take on Rishab in the junior snooker final.

In the sub-junior snooker finals, Ankit Kapoor beat Rishab Dhamija in a close contest 2-1(16-63, 51-38, 38-15). Rishab made nice breaks of 16 to take away the first frame. Ankit came back from behind in the second frame and won by potting blue and pink balls. The third and the final frame was a tight one and pressure showed on these young boys, as they missed easy pots. Ankit kept his cool and played safely and finally potted pink and black balls to win the title.

Youngster Rishab Gupta playing showed good touch and class to beat Ajay Jadeja in a fighting match 2-1(25-58, 90-55, 43-35). In the other junior snooker semi-final, Ajay Jain who has been doing well easily outclassed Ish Kaushik in straight sets 2-0 ( 60-25, 80-30). Ajay now plays Rishab in the final to be held tomorrow.

In the senior snooker match, Amit Verma easily won over Rahul Singla 3-0 (65-15, 57-39, 77-23). The potter cueist Amit was in control of the balls from the very first frame and played well. He came up with small breaks of 18, 21 and 19 in the frames and won easily against his opponent.

AITA Meet
Bhati outplays Tegbir

Mohali, May 1
Dheer Anush Bhati of Chandigarh displayed his left handed inside out forehands to overcome Tegbir Singh Hara of Ludhiana in Manav Mangal Total Tennis AITA talent series tournament, which concluded at school complex in phase 10 here today.

Yesterday, the match was stopped at 7-5 ,5-7 ,6-6 due to bad light and the match was postponed for today. Marathan match which lasted more the three-and-half hour witnessed deep long rallies, mixing with vollies and placement of the shots around the court. Hara was leading 4-2 and then 5-3 in the final set but chocked on crucial points and Bhati took advantage.

Today, the match started at 8.30 am. Bhati took the charge from the very first point and used his weapon inside out forehands to put Hara on the baseline from one corner to the other. Hara couldn't handle Bhati's left handed corner-to-corner strokes and lost the match at 7-5 in the tiebreaker. The final score was 5-7 , 7-5 ,7-6 (7-5) in Bhati's favour. — TNS

Gulshan, Jagdeep enter final qualifying round

Gulshan Singh, Jagdeep Singh, Angrej Singh, trainees of the Chandigarh Academy for Rural Tennis (CHART) and Rahul Verma of DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, have moved to the final qualifying round of the boys under-12 ATIA Talent Series Tennis Tournament being held at CLTA here today.

This is their first appearance in the AITA tournament. Boys under-12 final qualifying round will be held on May 2 at CLTA. Boys under-16 2nd round matches will be held at CLTA and the Lake Club starting at 8am and 9am respectively. The final qualifying round will be held on the same day after 12 noon.
