Off the field, Kings still rule
Mohali, April 2
The Kings, who have had an unexplainably dismal showing in the third edition, are still genuine crowd pullers. The pundits might disagree, but the stadium painted red with flags, coloured faces and untiring fans in a way seals the debate. Yuvraj, still the prince charming. He has been in the news for all the wrong reasons, off late, but if Yuvraj Singh knows how to take things in his stride, so do his fans. The Chandigarh boy scored a breezy 36 and, first he got a massive reception as he went in to bat, and from then on, every run he scored was cheered to the hilt. When he finally got out, the stadium did not have an eerie silence, but the fans did applaud him for doing what was possible; trying to score some quick runs. Kaif Reloaded
Another rare ‘spectacle’ was that there were two prominent Kaifs present outside the ground. While cricketer Mohd Kaif, who has been out of favour with the Kings, was cooling his heels as a substitute, actress Katrina Kaif, the RCB ambassador was seen near the players’ dug-out along with Vijay and Siddharth Mallya. Irfaan followed to the ‘T’
Merchandising is a big part of the franchise business in the IPL. And the Kings have made the most of their fan base too. While free t-shirts are distributed among the fans by co-owner Priety Zinta, fans are not shying away from buying their own stuff either. While there are numerous outlets across the tri-city, the ones inside the stadium too are doing handy business. “Each stand sells around 30-35 jerseys in a single match day”, said one of the boys handling the outlet. And among the T-shirts with player names printed behind them, Irfan Pathan was a clear favourite. The chocolate boy looks of the Baroda all-rounder are bringing in ‘sweet’ rewards for the franchise it seems. Punch Time
While there were moments galore during the game, as is the case with every IPL game, the clincher has to be when Yuvraj went in to bat after captain Kumar Sangakkara was dismissed. The two have been in the eye of a storm with reports of a rift within the team doing the rounds. But here, in what looked like a deliberate stunt, the two punched fists while crossing. Sanga even had some advice for the local boy. It was a different tale that it was not of much benefit in the end, as far as the outcome mattered. |
