Litigants, lawyers rue absence of courts complex
Dera Bassi, March 28 Currently, the judicial work is being carried out at the administrative complex on temporary basis. With no proper place for conducting judicial work, litigants and lawyers have been facing various problems. Jaspal Singh Dappar, president of the local Bar association, says lawyers have no place to put their records and have been doing their work from a congested place. “We have been facing several problems in the smooth conduct of work due to the lack of proper complex”, says Bharat Bhushan Ahuja, a lawyer, demanding the construction of a courts complex. Harbhajan Singh, former sarpanch of Rampur Sainia village, rues the absence of basic amenities at the current place of operation. “Due to the absence of a judicial complex, there is no seating area for litigants. To make the matters worse, the authorities have also made no provision for drinking water,” he adds. Expressing similar views, Hari Chand, former sarpanch of Chaundheri village, says there is a need for a separate complex, as people of the area have to come from far-off places. SDM Puneet Goyal says the municipal council has given its approval for providing 4 acre for the construction of a judicial complex following a proposal by the Sessions Judge. However, the state government will provide money for the work on the complex and land. It will further be transferred to the law department and work will be carried out by the committee concerned of the High Court, he adds. |

Kings XI Piteous
Chandigarh, March 28 The internal rift in the management and players can be a possible cause of the dismal show by the team in the third edition of the league, sources have confirmed. At the same time, many cricket aficionados are talking about a ‘visible crack’ in the team. “The decision of taking captaincy away from local cricketer Yuvraj Singh has proved fatal for the team. I think a rift can seen not only in management circles, but also in the team, which has had a detrimental impact,” says an IPL official, preferring anonymity. Without much argument, the chances of the Kumara Sangakkara-led team, currently placed at the bottom of the points table, to reach the semi-finals are bleak. The top batsmen of the team, Yuvraj, Mahela Jayawardene and Sangakkara, have not done well, averaging 16.5, 16.4 and 18.2, respectively. The bowling attack also appears toothless as the main bowlers have failed to deliver. S Sreesanth has taken two wickets for 143 runs in four matches while Irfan Pathan has scalped five wickets for 185 runs in six matches. Critics may argue that the reported rift between Wadia and Zinta has coincided with the poor performance of the team. The once-in-love pair avoids sharing the same seating area. According to sources, the Videocon group is in talks with Wadia and Zinta to acquire a stake in the team for between $200 million and $225 million (Rs 920 crore and Rs 1,035 crore). Offers by Venugopal Dhoot, Videocon group chairman, have been made and talks are on. Things may change in case of a good showing from now on. Besides Wadia and Zinta, who reportedly own around 23 per cent each, Karan Paul of Apeejay and Surindra, Mohit and Gaurav Burman of Dabur are other co-owners of the team. They had jointly bought the team for $76 million in 2008 for 10 years. Dhoot was in the running for the Pune franchise with a bid of $319.9 million, but lost out to Sahara’s $370 million bid. |

Gurinder’s ton steers HDFC to victory
Chandigarh, March 28 After winning the toss, HDFC Bank XI decided to bat first, however, it suffered two quick jolts and lost two quick wickets for just 32 runs in 5 overs. Thereafter, Gurinder Saini held the fort with Vipan Chauhan and built up a partnership of 70 runs in the next 12 overs. Gurinder Saini smashed the ball to all parts of the ground and raced to his half century in just 36 balls and took another 36 deliveries to get to his score of 110 runs before being bowled out by Umesh Kaira. The masterful innings had 11 boundaries and four sixes. Once Gurinder Saini was out, it was all downhill for HDFC, as the remaining five wickets fell for just 17 runs in four overs. Umesh Kaira and Ajay Bhardwaj of the Godrej & Boyce were largely responsible for this crunch, as they bundled out the HDFC lower order with some clever bowling and some fine fielding towards the end. HDFC posted 204 runs in 27.3 overs. Chasing a victory target of 205 runs, Godrej & Boyce’s Umesh Kaira gave his team a good start even after the loss of an early wicket. Umesh batted sensibly, as the bowlers with their line and length bowling gave as many as 15 extras in the first 15 overs. Umesh Kaira and Jai Kapil together put up a partnership of 50 runs for the second wicket before a mix up between the two well-settled batsmen. Umesh was out and had to leave the crease after completing his half-century off 47 deliveries, which included four boundaries and a massive six. Thereafter, Inderjeet was the only batsman, who impressed with the bat, as the other batsmen kept quiet, with the bowlers tightening their line and length. Inderjeet made 53 valuable runs off 44 balls before Gurinder Saini bowled him out in the 28th over. But he got his team sufficiently close to the target with 17 runs required. Vijaypal tried his best to get those runs, but a fine last over by Gurinder Saini ensured that Godrej fell short of the target by six runs. Earlier, in the match played for the third and fourth positions, ICICI Bank XI defeated Ria Constructions XI by 15 runs. Brief scores: HDFC Bank XI: 204 all out in 27.3 overs (Gurinder Saini 110, Ravinder Nain 25, Vipan Chauhan 24, Ajay Bhardwaj 4/35, Umesh Kaira 3/33 and Inderjeet 2/32). Godrej & Boyce XI: 198 for 6 in 30 overs. (Indrejeet 53, Umesh Kaira 51, Rajesh Monu 31, Chandan Puri 2/46 and Gurinder Saini 1/33) Brief scores: ICICI Bank XI: 178 for 5 in 20 overs (Gourav 62 and Rakesh Mehta 39). RIA Constructions XI: 163 for 7 in 20 overs (Rajneesh Mittal 51, Tejdeep 2 for 20 and Pankaj 2 for 23).
