Chhat (Banur), March 24 Being a holiday, the zoo director was not present in the office, but his official vehicle remained busy taking around the daughter of a senior wildlife official and her friend for an extensive visit to the zoo today. Even the driver escorting them had been specially called in from Chandigarh and was not 1deployed on the zoo premises. Interestingly, even the staff had a busy time saluting the vehicle assuming that the director was riding in it. “My vehicle was following the director’s vehicle when we entered the zoo. While I paid Rs 250 as the entry fee, the director’s vehicle zoomed by with the guards on toes,” said Kuldip Malhotra, a visitor from Patiala. The employees on the condition of anonymity revealed that this was not for the first time, but earlier also the families and friends of the senior officials paid visit to the zoo in similar way. Besides enjoying all other freebies, they use the official vehicle as well. A senior zoo official on the condition of anonymity said use of official vehicle was not permissible even for a minute and it was a sheer wastage of government money and manpower. When the matter was brought to the notice of Punjab Forests and Wildlife Preservation Minister Tikshan Sood, he assured to look into the matter and said an action would be initiated against the officials involved in misusing the official machinery. Zoo director Tushar Kanti Bahera admitted that his vehicle was used for sightseeing, but added that he was present on the zoo premises at that time. |

Grooming session for boxers begins
Patiala, March 24 Chief national boxing coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu, Cuban coach BI Fernandis, RK Kelley, in charge academics, Rajdeep Kaur, in charge science faculty, and Bhiwani boxing coach Jagdish Singh were present on the occasion. While inaugurating the seminar, Ghuman said, “I am hopeful of the team’s win in the Commonwealth Games.” He appreciated the efforts of coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu. Gurbax Singh Sandhu and Fernandis conducted the workshop. Sandhu said experts would dwell on planning, periodisation, load dynamics, strategies, tactics and changing trends of boxing during the workshop. Science teachers will deliver lectures on the latest trends of training methods, sports psychology, sports physiology and anthropometry. They will also deliberate upon various methods for training boxers for the Commonwealth Games. Around 20 coaches are participating in the workshop. |

4-kg opium seized, 1 held
Rajpura, March 24 Rajpura City SHO Bikramjeet Brar said a naka was laid on the Ambala-Rajpura road on a tip off. The accused was driving a two-wheeler towards Rajpura and was intervened for checking. Policemen recovered 4 kg of opium from his possession and a case was registered against him at the Rajpura City police station. 5 booked in gangster murder
case
Ambala, March 24 The Haryana police had constituted five police teams to nab the culprits. Giving this information here today, SP Bharti Arora said the police had booked Nishan Singh and Kuldeep of Ambala in the case. Three others booked, but absconding included Vikram of Ambala Cantt, Priya Ranjan of Bihar and Gobind of Rajasthan. According to official sources, the SP ordered suspension of four policemen after receiving an inquiry report, which held Inspector Balwant Rai, SI Madan Lal, ASI Vinod and one more responsible for not performing duty properly. The assailants not only hit Bobby from a point-blank range but also managed to flee from the spot. Bobby was involved in various criminal activities and allegedly killed a local municipal councillor Raju Dhallaiya at Ambala Cantt. He had 146 FIRs registered against him in various police stations. His name was involved in 12-13 cases of murder under Section 302 of the IPC in the district and about 32 cases registered in Haryana. |

Thermal plant working reviewed
Ropar, March 24 He visited all the other locations in boiler and turbine areas where the overhauling work was going on. Sra also visited sedimentation tank in coal handling plant and sewerage treatment plants that were under construction. He asked officials to complete the work soon. Chief engineer PK Sood told him that overhauling work of Unit No. 4 was closed for the past 45 days and would start functioning within 25 days after completing the overhauling work. He said record of previous highest generation of 9,806.16 million during 2007-08 had been exceeded. The generation would improve further and much higher record would be achieved by March 31. He said 100 per cent of dry and 90 per cent of wet ash was being used for the past six months in the plant. |

After submitting the memorandum, Dalbir Singh and Kamaljeet Singh, representatives of SSF unit, informed “Punjabi University is an influential institution and people may follow any initiative taken by it,” said Parmjeet Singh Gazi, national president of the organisation. “SSF is also working to spread awareness among students, and a booklet carrying detailed information on the current crisis would be released soon,” he added. |

Patiala, March 24 Addressing protesters, SNO president Dr Manjit Singh Randhawa said the Nizam-e-Adl 2009 regulation should be repealed in order to safeguard the human rights of Indian citizens within international borders of Pakistan. He maintained that without repealing the regulation, it was impossible to save lives, property and shrines of minority Sikhs and Hindus in Swat valley and North-West Frontier Province in Pakistan from the Taliban rule. “It is unfortunate that the United Nations Human Rights system is observing silence on persecution of minorities that stood reduced to negligible levels in Pakistan, as a result of forced conversions, killings and migration. Pakistan is signatory to various UN conventions on human and minority rights and conservation of diverse cultural and religious world heritage of humanity,” they added. |

BJP demands shifting of MC office
Ambala, March 24 He said the utilisation of the same building would save money. He, however, lamented that the elected representatives, including panches and sarpanches, had not been taken into consideration by the Haryana government before announcing a municipal corporation for Ambala. Anil Vij said the move, which was the brainchild of the Congress, was against the interests of people. Vij said there was a distance of 10 km between Ambala City and Ambala Cantt. If the proposed municipal corporation had its office at the administrative complex in Ambala City, residents of Ambala Cantonment would be put to inconvenience. Meanwhile, according to official sources, the new corporation would have 31 wards. The number of voters in each ward would be 10,000 against the present 3,000 in each ward. The charge of the newly-formed municipal corporation has been given to the local sub-divisional magistrate till elections are held after the notification of new wards. |

Murder accused held after 2 years
Zirakpur, March 24 Nageshwar Sahni, a migrant labourer, died after his brother-in-law Varinder Sahni and a relative Hari Narayan smashed a beer bottle on his head. The incident took place on August 4 last year. The police said the accused would be produced before the Dera Bassi court tomorrow. Zirakpur SHO Yogi Raj said Varinder Sahni, one of the accused, was nabbed at Madhuban district, Bihar, and other accused Hari Narayan would be arrested soon. On October 3, 2008, Nageshwar Sahni, a labourer in his mid-twenties was murdered by two youths after they had an altercation with him over a petty issue. He was found dead in a godown. |

When we asked her to vacate, she refused to do so,” alleged Tripta Singh. On the other hand, Rupam alleged that the couple was lying. “They have inflicted injuries themselves to lodge a false complaint against me. In fact, they attacked me along with their two maidservants today afternoon. Chandigarh, March 24 After winning the toss, Modgill Challengers elected to bat first and scored 136 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs. Yogesh 33 and Jaswinder Saini 31 were the main scorers. For Pace Riders, Parvesh was the pick of the bowlers, who scalped two wickets for 17 runs. Gross strength in sportspersons was a major requirement, he added. Dr Sharma said coaches needed to groom players keeping in mind their capabilities. He said the players should follow a balanced programme. Gradual increase in the workload would bring better adaptability to improve the strength of sportspersons’ muscles, he added. 5 amateurs hone skills for Queen Sirikit Cup
Chandigarh, March 24 The young lady golfers are honing their skills for the Queen Sirikit Golf Cup to be played at Hamilton in New Zealand from April 7 to 9. The five comprising three-member India team, Vani Kapoor, Gurbani Singh, Shreya Ghai, reserve player Neha Tripathi and Akriti Singh. The team will leave on April 2 for the cup. Indian Golf Union Ladies Section (IGULS) chairperson Soni Manjit Singh was all for having bench strength of 10 to 12 players, who could make the India team on any given occasion. “For this we need more such golf academies, where the players can hone their skills under top teaching professionals. The National Golf Academy of India is a perfect place to hold a conditioning camp. But such facilities should be available at more centres across the country for periodic assessment of leading golf players.” She agreed that India’s performance in the Queen Sirikit Cup had been poor. But she hastened to add that the average scores had improved from 84, three years back, to 77 today. She said inclusion of Akriti Singh in the conditioning camp was to prepare a team for the next Queen Sirikit Cup to be held in India in 2011. |
