The Thread of God in my Life: An Autobiography with a DifferenceIN this engaging autobiography, R. M. Lala has narrated his life’s journey in a simple yet effective way. He has portrayed a vivid picture of his life since childhood till now and has given the readers an opportunity to glimpse into his personal memories. The author has full faith in God, and the strength of this belief has guided him through serious illnesses, broken marriage, financial adversity, etc. He believes that there is always a "thread of God" in everyone’s life, but it depends on individuals how they weave that thread and make their lives better.

Lala, who had an impressive career in journalism, publishing, philanthropy and writing books, remained editor of Himmat for many years. He has written about all ups and downs of his journalistic career in the UK and India. Outstanding personalities like J. R. D. Tata, J. B. Kriplani, Dr M. S. Swaminathan, Azim Premji, Narayana Murthy, B. P. Chaiha, Zakir Hussain, Nana Palkhiwala, C. N. Vakil, Sam Manekshaw, Vijay Merchant and many more found place in his books. His meetings with Vinoba Bhave, Mother Teresa, Dalai Lama, Jyotibhai Desai of Vedchhi, near Surat, and J. R. D. Tata have been a source of learning and spiritual awakening.

The book is divided into two parts. In the first part, Lala shares his experiences gained in early formative years. He writes about his grandfather, his mother ‘Bhikhaiji’, and his father. He has fond memories of them, even though his parents were separated. He remembers how he spent weekends with his father Maneckshaw P. Lala who was a successful solicitor. His college days at St. Xavier’s College, Bombay, from 1944 to 1948, were equally memorable. Lala’s urge for expression started from his college days, which later took him to journalism and publishing. His love for reading books was a legacy from his father.

He has written about ups and downs in his married life. He is a cancer survivor and remains a fighter, though the fighting spirit is not at the same level everyday or all times during the same day. He says keeping yourself busy is a great therapy, while the peace of mind is a vital factor to harmonise yourself.

The second part of the book, Learning Values, is about influences and thoughts that helped shape him. Faith flourishes when we accept that God has a plan and we have a part to play. As Lala says, "Through all the turmoil of the last five decades, through pain and discomfort and physical, his hand has held me. His love has sustained me."

Lala’s style of writing is very simple. In an enchanting way he has unfolded the deep-rooted memories of his childhood, adulthood, married life and working life. It is a beautiful book to read, learn and possess, while "the thread of God" is there to guide you and create happiness in your life.
